Is Fallout 4 worth $20?

For $20 it's worth it.

People talk about this game like it ran over their dog repeatedly with a lawnmower in front of their young children. It's not great (in my opinion none of the Bethesda/not 1 or 2 Fallouts are) but for $20, sure.

It's alright for that price. I dunno. I regret getting it for full price but I still got some enjoyment out of it. Definitely worse than FO3/NV tho.

Just noticed uncharted 1-3 is just 7.99€ each. That's just 24€ for the collection, not bad...

It's a very enjoyable, good game, but a bad RPG and has many flaws. Definitely worth $20 for me.
If you go into it with the mindset of "I wanna wander in post apocalypse and shoot things nice like." You'll have a good time.

Story is wack booboo.

Absolutely.

It's not the Fallout game that Fallout fans wanted and so it gets a ton of hate, however, if the fact that it's called Fallout doesn't bother you then it's a really good game.

It's not as good as Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but if you liked those games you'll probably still enjoy it. I enjoyed Fallout 4 and I definitely recommend it for $20.

It really, really isn't. Much better graphics, much better character creator (let down by the voiced protag tho), much better gameplay, much better companions and more companion quests and whatnot, a crafting system where basically every single item in the world can be deconstructed for scraps, a story that actually lets you do different things instead of being railroaded down Fallout 3's shitty one, a much better main city to explore with no subway tunnel fuckery.

One of the few informed posts of this thread.

Fallout 4 takes a good number of steps forward from Fallout 3, while taking a few but large steps back (such as with the dialogue system). And it still remains far worse than New Vegas but its Bethesda so what's new. If you like playing Bethesda RPGs, you should enjoy it. Simple as that. And as always, I recommend mods to better the experience.

EDIT: Scratch that, you're on PS4. Well, uh, you can at least try...something. Whatever doesn't use external assets I guess. Don't know of any good ones that don't.

I am one of those weirdos who immensely enjoys building settlements, so yes.

I even still really like the game and bought it at full price.

I started Fallout with FO3 so I don't know why everyone thinks the game shat the bed. I haven't beaten 4 yet but I have about 80 hours or so. The fact that the world isn't weirdly separated by underground tunnels already makes it better than FO3 to me. I am not much of a story-first guy though.

Vanilla Fallout 4 is pretty bare bones but still fun especially if you like building and just going around sight seeing. I don't think it's better than 3 or New Vegas which is my fave but it's still fun.

Modded Fallout 4 is on another level.

I've put 200 hours into the game. I've never gotten all that far in the main story. It's just so horrendously paced and boring. The premise is fine, but then it all falls off a cliff immediately.
Also for the love of all, why did they have to use songs from the previous games? If I ever hear that Civilization song again I think my head will explode.

I thought it was better than Fallout 3 but nowhere near as good as New Vegas.

If you liked Fallout 3 you'd probably like this one. I felt I got my money's worth at $60. Wasn't the best game I ever played but I enjoyed my time with it a lot.

If you want a Fallout RPG, no. Bethesda decided to do a RPG the Bioware-style as you can see with the dialogue wheel, and as with the Mass Effect series, they're barely RPGs.

The thing is, Bethesda writing has always been awful, in a lot of ways the main story protagonist and story is a somewhat inverted version of Fallout 3 's.

However at least with Fallout 3 it still allowed you to roleplay better with a lot more meaningful dialogue choice. Fallout 3 had more than 4, but Fallout 3 still was awful with dialogue skill checks.

However even though I was disappointed, I still enjoyed my time with it because it does have good moments like The Silver Shroud quest line for example. Far Harbour is also a big step up from the base game. Also Bethesda made actually a somewhat interesting character in comparison to those of their other games, Nick Valentine. At least since Morrowind any way.

The game has an active modding scene, there are 20-25k active players on average per day (at time of this post 41k playing), very few singleplayer games have these numbers after release for so long, the general reaction on forums like GAF or RPGCodex is not really that representative of the perception of the game as a whole. Funnily in a lot of ways Fallout 4 is actually what a lot of people wanted from the complaints they had of Fallout 3, lots of people hated that skill checks still existed in the FPS component of Fallout 3 making it not fun as a shooter, so Bethesda went full out shooter with Fallout 4. Ever since Bethesda acquired the IP with Fallout 3 there has been two types of players, one that likes it as a RPG in full form, and one that likes it as a FPS (you can even see it just by the types of mods that existed for Fallout 3 and hell even NV), a result from taking it from its isometric top-down origin to a first person game.

Yes, very much so if you are a fan of the genre. Ignore the first few posts. It's a trend on Gaf to hate on older games just because it's "cool". Happens with every god damn game. While Fallout 4 has it's flaws such as the shallow conversation system, and also the plot line to some degree, but think there is more than enough content here to play and enjoy. I would recommend playing it pc though.

I kind of find it insane how many people are saying its not worth $20. It absolutely is. Way worse games are worth that amount.

You get tons of gameplay, fun progression, tons of storylines, and a huge amount of little things to find.

And if you get it on the PC, bunch of mods you can try out.

Yes. I had a lot of fun with it. The story wasn't really good, but had its moments and featured some charismatic characters. It's a prettier game, compared to its generation, than its predecessors. The RPG mechanics had a few steps back in how they streamlined skills into perks, effectively reducing the possibilities of builds, but that doesn't make it a bad game. Weapon modding is great and the combat, for the first time since the originals, is actually good and fun.
Paid full price for it, don't regret it. Put 100+ hours into it.

It's fine, albeit incredibly unspectacular. It's a good way to make 100 hours go away but it's not a great game by any means.

You can never put a price on entertainment. The game may be worth 100 bucks to some, and not worth a single penny to others. Hence the crazy threads about why people buy the games they do at the prices they do on this site.

If you can afford it, buy it. Or get it used a GS and try it. I know they have a return policy if you dislike the game/broken for whatever reason, within seven days (been awhile since I shopped there, I do not know if they still have this policy).

It's NeoGAF. Hyperbole is the name of the game.

I don't like Fallout 4 as a Fallout game, but yeah, for a twenty, it's a fun open world shooter with some rpg tendencies.

I don't think the game is that strong personally, but there's a ton of content even without the DLC, and it's a lot of fun still. Out of the Bethesda Fallouts, it's my least favorite, but yes it's absolutely worth $20.

Don't listen to the fans. They're the last ones you should listen to if this is your first Fallout game. Ask yourself this: What do want from the game? If you want

- Open-world FPS sandbox with tons of crafting and base building. Buy it.

- A story-driven FPS RPG with deep characters and plots. Skip it.

Thanks all!

Looks like if I go into it thinking it's a separate game (i.e not Fallout part 4) from the Fallout franchise, I should have fun. Other than that, it's just more of the (worse) same.

Thanks again. <3

It's definitely worth $20. It's hundreds of hours of RPG goodness and thousands and thousands of mods, still being made to this day. It's not a good Fallout game but it is a good game. If you go in thinking it isn't a Fallout game you'll love it.

I don't know what $20 means to you. I don't know your tastes. I don't know how much free time you have. I don't know your history with the franchise.

This is how I feel. I'll just give you some key points to think about:

-Did you play Fallout 3 and New Vegas? Did you REALLY like NV? If the answer to both of these is yes, you're in for a massive disappointment.
-The game is bloated with filler quests. The infamous "Another settlement needs your help!" quests from Preston being the most egregious example.
-Your dialogue choices have no impact, ever. You can say just about anything to anyone and the result will be the same, barring a different tone of voice or slightly different reaction. A lot of the time you can attempt to refuse a quest and the quest giver will dismiss your answer and give it to you anyway.
-Quest design has little variety. The vast majority are just "Go here, shoot mutants/raider/ghouls, come back." I don't recall many quests having multiple outcomes.

The big take away from the game's critics is that you can't role play for shit in this game. That's Fallout 4's biggest crime, especially coming after New Vegas:

No quest in Fallout 4 offers nearly that amount of complexity. You solve most problems by shooting something in the face and looting its corpse. If you're ok with that, the game may be worth it to you. It offers a lot of content, well done combat mechanics, and if you're into it you can really get lost in the settlement building. Your enjoyment of Fallout 4 really comes down to what you expect out of Fallout game. If it's the ability to role play a character, it's a disaster.
