Vegas holiday tips...

Hey guys me and the mrs are going to Vegas for the 3rd time this year. I wanted some tips from you guys in terms of places to visit while we're there. We have been a couple of times already so we have been up and down the strip and visited most of the casinos and restaurants however this time we have a car for the duration of our stay. We were considering driving to the Grand Canyon however I don't think either of us have the balls to walk on the sky walk thing is it worth driving out just to have a look at (I don't fancy the 5 hr drive but google said the skywalk bit was 2hrs). We also looked at lake mead for a day trip maybe. Peppermill is my favourite place to eat in Vegas btw :)

If you want to try some more outdoorsy stuff there are a few things you can do.

Zion Canyon is pretty awesome with some easier hiking. It's 2.5 hours away by car though.

To the west of Vegas is Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. There's some pretty cool hiking out there.

Lawry's to eat if you've never been. It's only slightly off the strip. Like a walkable distance, but easier with a car. That authentic old Vegas feel with nothing but Prime Rib on the menu, which they bring to your table to carve. It does feel antiquated, but in the best possible way.

Pinball Hall of Fame is one that I've never made it to, but I always plan to.

subbed as I'm probably going the second weekend of July.

I've never actually went to Vegas on my own dime. I have no clue where to stay with the misses. Where to look for the best hotel deals (I'm only stayed at Mandalay Bay).

Going for EVO? I'll be down in Vegas around that time too. Staying at the Mandalay Bay as well.

Hoping to find some cool things to check out / do Thursday once we've checked into the hotel after the drive.

I wasn't going for Evo but it just happens to be the same time.

Well worth going to the Grand Canyon. Me and mate went in January for a joint 40th birthday for a few days. Yes it's a good couple of hours drive but it's a really scenic trip.

Plus there's a really rustic little town you pass through once you come off the i93 where you can pull up and pop into the store for a drink and a snack. The Skywalk's ok but I wouldn't say it's essential as you can walk up to the edge of the canyon anyway and take photos to your hearts content. Plus, you're not allowed to take a camera out onto it, if you want a picture they've got people on there who'll do it and charge you a ridiculous amount for the pleasure.

If you've got a car I'd also recommend the Hoover Dam as it's a hell of a feat of engineering and, more importantly, free to see. We drove over the dam and on the other side there's plenty of free parking so you can get out and have a look round, though you have to pay to go into the visitor centre. Also there's a path from the roof of the multi-storey car part on the visitor centre side that you can walk up and it takes you over the Mike O'Callaghan/Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge which actually looks down onto the dam, so a head for heights is advisable!

You'll have to excuse the last picture as I'm awful with heights and was leaning back as far away from the railing as I could!

Nearly every casino (minus the smaller ones) have these. I'd argue that the local Station Casinos might fit the bill if you wanted cheaper amenities, but they are further from the Strip.
Aria/Cosmopolitan have all been superb, but I've stayed on company dime and know they price way high.

Also, we ran out of time to do it ourselves but if you're interested Death Valley's only a couple of hours drive from Vegas.

The Grand Canyon is always worth a look. I've never done the skywalk, though.

Honestly, if I could only do one, I'd do the Grand Canyon over Vegas any day (and I love Vegas). If you've never been, most pictures just don't do the GC justice.

Yeah I've always been with the boss man who got everything comped. Mandalay Suites and VIP to everything

For me personally I was disappointed with Vegas itself. The whole time you're there it's perfectly obvious that everything around you is built to pluck every last cent they can get out of your pocket.

To me it's like the whole place is a big theme park where everyone and everything there is designed to get money from the tourists. I appreciate that's what it's there for but I just found it a bit too relentless for me. Whereas when we've been to New York it was amazing as it felt like a 'real' place where everyone goes about their own business and, whilst tourism's a big part, you don't think that everyone there is just staring at you with dollar signs in their eyes, if you get what I mean!

Plus it's so bizarre to see so much opulence on display everywhere but then you turn your head to the sidewalk and just see a homeless person every 20 yards.

They mean a lot of driving, but it's through some of the most amazing scenery and a mini roadtrip you'd be mad to pass off for sitting in some tacky casino

Red Rock is ~20 mins away from the strip and definitely worth a visit, it costs like $5-10 to get in with a car but you can spend hours inside - 20 mile driving loop and you can stop anywhere along the way and walk around, lot of great spots.

Valley of Fire is ~40 mins away, much bigger space but less "focused", there are some cool spots where you can see indian cave art and stuff on just the walls, you sorta feel like Indiana Jones.

Zion is hours away, worth a visit but its almost more than a day trip. Death Valley and Grand Canyon are also each 4-6 hours one way but definitely worth it if you have never been, I just wouldn't try to fit ALL of these into one trip but just pick one and make the most of it.

Couple of ghost towns a few hours away too, haven't been in a while so can't really give more details but you can google it and get tons of info.

If you played Fallout NV then visiting the towns of Good Springs and the like are really fun, its only 30 mins away from the strip.

To eat, besides the regular strip stuff I'd check out Chinatown lots of interesting and fun places over there, even at 2am in the morning. Easy with a car, just head up Spring Mountain Road going west and stop by anything that looks good (or use yelp).

BioShock Infinite is like playing some homeless guy's vivid imagination
If you can visit Death Valley National Park, DO IT. Make a two-day trip of it to see a lot of the attractions. Stay in the small town of Beatty, which has cheap rooms so that you're near the park.

If you don't want to drive to Death Valley or the Grand Canyon or Zion, and you still want an other-worldly scenic experience, GO TO VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK.

Some might tell you to do Red Rock Canyon, but trust me, Valley of Fire is where it's at. It's an unbelievable area.

Zion is amazing -- but I think Bryce is too far unless that's gonna be your entire trip. It's about 4 hours away from Zion, which is already 2.5 hours away from Vegas, easy. So it depends on what kind of timing you've got for the trip.

If you go to Zion, make sure to do the canyon floor walk. Rent some special shoes (worth it) and just follow the canyon as far as you care to go. The father you get the fewer people you'll run into.

I'd also suggest doing the pinball hall of fame for something closer. It's a fun afternoon -- get a roll of quarters and just play until you run out of money. It's really close to the strip too, so you can definitely plan to do it and then go and do the normal Vegas thing afterwards.

I'll be there second weekend in July for the Garbage and Blondie Rage and Rapture tour stop at the Palms.

As others have said, you can do Red Rock and Hoover Dam all in a day. If you go to Hoover Dam, I really recommend taking one of the guided tours inside the dam.

For eating, I highly, highly recommend this place:

It's off the strip, but it is an evening you'll remember with awesome food/decor/entertainment.

What do you recommend, the Prixe Fixe Feast? Is it too much food for two people? (Even though I know you pay per person.)

Going back the 20th of July. I've been at least once a year for 10 years. One of my happy places.

Encore is a solid choice. Only issue I have with it is that i prefer center strip, but for most people that isn't a consideration.

Can you explain why you prefer center strip? Outside of the obvious you're close to other hotels...

Looks like Encore is on the opposite end of the strip from Mandalay Bay. Man this was so much easier when it's just paid for and you show up.

Might as well ask in this thread.

Anyone ever done one of the Grand Canyon tours? Any recommendations/what to avoid? Traveling to the USA and no driving license don't mix well, but I still wanna check out the Canyon to get my nature fix.

The skywalk thing isn't worth the extra money, but the canyon itself is definitely worth visiting.

would have to reiterate, i highly doubt the skywalk is worth it for the price and the extra drive. it's ... 4 hours to the west of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon i think.

if you have the time/days, i'd recommend the hoover dam, Bryce/Zion. If you had plenty of days to kill, i'd recommend the south rim to north rim backpacking trips, but not in the middle of the summer of course.

I've actually done 2. One was a helicopter tour from McCarran to the West Rim and the other left from some other airport, took a plane to the main visitor's center, did a short helicopter trip there and then had some time on the rim.

The ones that leave from McCarran do the West Rim, which is near the skywalk and is IMO a less impressive part of the canyon. That said, you will often land in the canyon and get to look around, and also will usually get a flight over the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, the Strip and maybe the Valley of Fire out of it, and it's super convenient.

The plane one brings you to the part of the canyon everyone knows, which is a more impressive section. However, the plane isn't much fun and take a bit to get to (they have shuttles, but it's a much longer drive), the helicopter ride at the canyon is usually pretty short, and it's crowded.

Overall, the ones that leave right from Vegas are a better overall experience, but you're not going to the "real" canyon, so depending on how you feel about that you might want the plane ones. I felt like the plane one was rushed and less fun, but it was definitely a more impressive sight. The best is getting there some other way and having all the time you'd want, but that's another level of hassle.

Since you're coming from overseas, the plane options might be better, as they're more what you'd expect from the GC, and it's not as easy for you to come back.

I think the main thing is just getting between hotels if you want to walk around. I stayed in the Encore years ago, and it's great, but it's a trek anywhere else (for dinner/show/etc). More recently, I stayed a couple of times in the Mandarin, and it's much easier to get places. No matter what, walking in Vegas usually takes a while, but the Encore increases that a lot.

Las Vegas native here.

I've never done the Grand Canyon tours... so no input there, sorry!

Hotels
You get exactly what you pay for. "Oh man this is a great deal!!!" No it's not. The hotel will be run down, decor from the 70s, and just clean enough. I've stayed at MGM (and signature suites), Vdara, Aria, Luxor, Excalibur, Tropicana, Mirage, Venetian, Palazzo, Monte Carlo, Mandalay Bay, and Caesars. I've stayed in a ton of the hotels off strip too. Overall, off strip hotels are actually cleaner on average for what you pay for. Even within the same hotel, the price range is directly correlated to the quality of the room.

My overall pick would probably be something like Aria. Yeah it's $300/night but you're pretty close to the center of the strip, all the rooms are nice, and it's a super high quality hotel.

Food
It's Las Vegas. Do a buffet. Get all you can eat sushi. I actually love our Mexican food too, but go to North/east Las Vegas where people speak Spanish more than English and you'll get some authentic (like grilled out of a steel drum and freshly made tortillas) Mexican.

Also, get tapas at Firefly, just off the strip. I'm actually not a huge fan of this place but literally every person I've ever brought here from out of town told me it was their highlight of the trip for food.

Be outdoorsy
I love the Red Rock Canyon for scenery and trails. Lots of desert stuff to see. Last time I was up there, my favorite trail was closed but it could be open now. The peak of turtle head lets you see the entire Las Vegas valley and give a gorgeous view of Red Rock Canyon. But that's a 4 hour hike and a 2000ft climb, so be prepared.

Mt Charleston also more trails and some mountain forestry and wildlife but the views are sort of lacking and there's not a ton to do once you're up there.

Make your way down to Hoover Dam and enjoy the water down the river. There's even a few hiking trails down the river of the dam. They're pretty quick and one of them starts inland and ends at the river near some hot springs.

Drink
Best bars are downtown for sure. At least the ones within walking distance of each other. Just east of the Freemont Street Experience (huge ridiculous overhead marquee for light shows) there's a TON of bars and food places. This area has really flourished and this easily outpaces the strip for drinks and easy food. Downtown cocktail room is my favorite place down here; they make fantastic drinks if you're into IBA cocktails and not just rum and coke. Frankie's Tiki Room just outside of the downtown area used to be my favorite place to get hammered, but you probably won't want to be driving after leaving there.

Cool shit to do
Vegas has more than just Cirque du Soleil and Backstreet Boys on the strip. Obviously, if shows are your thing, go see one. For Cirque, I've seen Beatles Love 3 times; I adore the Beatles and this show is perfect for it. For normal ass acrobatics, watch O at Bellagio. It's quintessential Cirque du Soleil.

For other stuff, you can go to the pinball museum, go indoor skydiving, ride the worlds largest observation wheel, throw axes at targets indoors, have a club/golf experience, shoot full auto machine guns, race exotic cars around a racetrack, zipline from a hotel roof, and jump off of the Stratosphere tower. Google "things to do" in Las Vegas and I promise you it's not just a list of strip casinos and restaurants.

The Las Vegas Strip is a scam, go downtown for drinks and nightlife
If you want to see it, drive down it slowly with your windows down at night. With the lights on the strip is a sight to behold, but not one to walk down. It's brutal. Figure out what casino has the stuff you want to see and drive there. There's absolutely no reason to be walking up and down this god forsaken street in the middle of summer.

For nightlife, Las Vegas is literally second to none if you like the club scene. Clubs are a billion dollar industry here and people like Kaskade, Tiesto, Calvin Harris, etc are basically residents. I for one don't dig clubs, and that's why I generally recommend going to the Fremont East district for nightlife.

From time to time I see Vegas threads and always meant to write a personal list of things to do. I'm sure I missed a lot of stuff but this is my personal baseline.

Got any particular buffet recommendations? AYCE Sushi sounds amazing.

Yup this is what I mean. Center strip to me is Flamingo/Linq area. It really isn't that big of a deal, but I find it nice to be in the middle of the 'action' since I like to hop around. But it is really only a minor inconvenience. I wouldn't sweat it that much.

Yes. I watch every year but finally going this time. Can't wait!

Awesome. I'm jealous. That first EVO trip is pure magic (I went the past 2 years but am skipping this year).

Save some money prior and go to the Bacchanal buffet at Caesar's. Well worth the entry price - go with friends.

Supposedly Border Grill is amazing (and good value) at Mandalay Bay but we didn't get a chance to try it last year.

Wife veto'd the trip for July 11th-15th. Looks like we're now going July 4th-8th.

I've narrowed it down to Aria or Encore leaning heavily towards Encore. Vegas natives... Anything cool that goes on for 4th of July?

Booked at the Encore. Saved almost $300 booking the same room on Agoda. Went with a slightly later flight and saved $200 more bucks. Super happy for the wife and I coming in under $1300 for flight and hotel.

Taking a hike in the Grand Canyon was the number one thing I did with a friend on a road trip from Seattle to Miami in 2013. And that's saying a lot, since we visited a ton of places. The first time I saw it I was literally paralyzed, it was so beautiful.

I got a deal for the hotel but the ticket prices felt pretty insane to me for Vegas. But prices seemed normal whenever the time range was very early morning or late at night
