So this is how Nintendo expects us to use headsets and voice chat on Switch

For everything Nintendo does right they still have some strange choices. Hopefully there is more to this. If not, I hope they at least are working on an integrated solution. I guess it's just hard to believe this is the only option available in this day and age.

And what if my Switch is docked by my TV which is 12 feet away, huh?

That makes this "solution" useless.

Way to go, Nintendo.

Yeah they really didn't think this through. I don't see the point in dedicating a smartphone app to voice chat. Like okay, the Switch UI is minimalistic and clean but that's not a big surprise when 50% of the features people expect on a console will only be available on a separate smartphone app... Why? Hopefully they rethink things after the 'free online beta' period. Seriously, people will have to speak up about this.

That reaction was expected. You act as if playing ANY game online doesn't consist of racist kids yelling nigg*r and fagg*t.

No, neither Sony or Microsoft have a solution for this other than "report", I've been called everything on online games, so don't be all like "but I don't have any issues! parental control exists!" Yeah, so what? They're useless.

It sucks for users, yes, big time, but what should they do? And again, don't mention PSN o Xbox live because that wouldn't fix their problem at all.

So how does making voice chat really inconvenient to access fix this? Almost every kid these days has a smartphone, and I'd wager a guess that they're still more likely to buy into this wiring crap than reasonable adults who are less likely to call each other these things.

There have been solutions for this since ages ago. First in PC and then in consoles, so please stop acting like you are a victim of the standards and use the perfectly fine solutions they provide you, before starting to justify this fucking mess and blaming the users for it. It is actually a problem of people like you, that suck so hard on this, why other people that know the advantages of standards, have to deal with it.

Are you drunk?

The state of voice communications in 2017 does not excuse this piss poor implementation at all. I have no idea why you're equating the two.

They SHOULD follow the same standards as LITERALLY EVERY OTHER COMPANY IN THEIR POSITION and come up with a solution that does not require a GOD DAMN PERIPHERAL to provide the very basics of voice chat in game. We had this figured out more than a decade ago.

If they truly didn't want their image tarnished by the ills of voice chat, their response should have been, "we'll make the ability to team up in our games, and the players can use the 3rd party voice chat of their choice. Hell, we'll include discord as an app if you want, but we're not going to do it ourselves".

What you and some of these other people seem to fail to understand is that Nintendo wants to charge you an annual fee ONTOP of the hardware costs for this which, given how pushed up joycon prices are, will almost certainly be above 50 dollars. That's shit. And just because you may not have any gumption to engage with voice chat doesn't make it any less shit.

Then it's incompetence then? How else do we explain nonsense like this?

DIRE, GRAVE incompetence.

Before anyone gets too angry about this:

Nintendo is a family oriented company, and the last time they allowed a direct communication tool in their systems -Swapnote- paedophiles started sending dick to kids.

They want to not be responsible for any bad behavior from the users, and since they don't want for their service to turn into an endless screaming, swearing, racist galore, they count on YOUR smartphone.

Ultimately it's customers fault for being assholes online, don't blame Nintendo

But it's OK to send dick pics to kids using X1 and PS4? Plenty of children play those consoles and they both have a very simple integrated chat function.

It's not the same thing; there's no way to mix game and voice audio, and without this dongle, no way around that.
Yup great point maybe nintendo's app will have a work around on this.

So i don't expect this thing to fly out of the stores. And random chat being dead on switch.
But hey since ps4 and xbox one has a party chat function this has been dead for a while now

Tbh i use discord for any game on any console i play and i dont personally care about the seperate audio issue.

Just when you think Nintendo can't further fuck up and over complicate simple online things, they pull this lol.

When me and my friends played MH on 3DS online we just used our PS4s to party chat, and if that was down for whatever reason we'd use our phones and Whatsapp call or discord.

I just don't get it, if we need to use our phones anyway, why not just use Discord/Skype/Whatsapp or whatever lol.

Also gotta love the fanboys defending this lol.

You mean all the consoles in the current year.
I may have worded this wrong. I meant to say that this isn't something that people have to pay for. If you're asking for money at least be on par with the competition.

I am against paid online for all consoles

Isn't it already dead though? Voice chat with strangers I mean.

People say this, but with the rise of Discord, built in mics on controllers, and more teamwork oriented games in general, it doesn't seem so. I mean, every time I'm in Overwatch dudes always ask if I have a mic.

And usually half the team does.

It is indeed incompetence. Read about how they built the online platform in Wii U and how they were given examples of PS3 and XBOX360 functionalities by third party developers. Their answer was "please stop giving these examples because we never tried their systems".

They just do things without researching and end up with solutions of 20 years ago.

All wires can be extended, nothing unique about them. Honestly this is just an entry level solution at low cost which will work. There are more expensive solutions which alreadt exist. I'm sure manufacturers will make more too, including Hori. Cable length is a non-issue.

See Nintendo? This is the type of thing that makes me want to wait for a Switch Lite

Well you can have your phone next to you with in ear headphones and then to also get the audio of the game you buy some Bluetooth over ears headphones that you connect with your TV (if it's a newer one which supports Bluetooth.) And wear them on top the ones you are using with your cellphone.

Easy!!!!!!

Oh yeah, I'd almost forgotten about this stupid idea with the app Nintendo has. This accessory is just a reminder that this is an actual problem and this is Hori's solution to it. Less than ideal, but maybe it's handy for some people.

Personally I'm just not gonna use the app for voice chat. Actually, I don't want to use the app at all. There's no reason to put all these features on a secondary device. I want them on the Switch itself. Or is it not powerful enough to handle voice chat during gameplay or something?

Now this would make an interesting read. Have anywhere I can go to read this at? I'm genuinely curious.

Because dena, thays why. They are a trash company thay should have never been near any design decissions of the OS

Or just buy an extension cable.

Easy.

People are complaining,.. but the fact is that thing is going to be sold out in two minutes is Japan and is going to be a trend accessorie over there.

Dang man Defense Force spinning this hard.

Nobody wants this solution, having a phone tied to me and a bulky switcher thing and a controller and headphones is not 2017 technology. Missed opportunity for Nintendo to evolve.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-secret-developers-wii-u-the-inside-story

We were told that the features, and the OS updates to support them, would be available before the hardware launch, but only just. There were apparently issues with setting up a large networking infrastructure to rival Sony and Microsoft that they hadn't envisaged.

This was surprising to hear, as we would have thought that they had plenty of time to work on these features as it had been announced months before, so we probed a little deeper and asked how certain scenarios might work with the Mii friends and networking, all the time referencing how Xbox Live and PSN achieve the same thing. At some point in this conversation we were informed that it was no good referencing Live and PSN as nobody in their development teams used those systems (!) so could we provide more detailed explanations for them?
