XB1X 4K standard includes checkerboard and dynamic

People keep saying "no shit", but I don't see how using the term "true 4K" isn't deceptive to the common consumer at all. It confused me because I assumed that it meant native 4K instead of checkboarding. I don't follow all this shit like you all do and you might think shit like this is common knowledge to people, but it's really not.

That is more confusing than the term "console launch exclusive". Why do they do shit like this?

It's like the Pro but better.
It was obvious since the beginning. Some fans wanted to believe in the native 4k@60fps dream.
We won't even get native 4k at 30fps in all games. 6 Teraflops and Jaguar is not enough.

Oh my god you caught them!!!!! Or maybe they have said from the beginning that devs choose and this is console warrior bs.....

I think OPs point is that Phil and MS are saying that the XOX is the only True 4K machine.

But whats the metric??; just being capable of native 4K, if the Dev chooses? Because the applies to the Pro also

We don't need to go into a marketing 101 lesson, but companies tend to promote what a product is capable of, not what the general use case is. Scorpio can do native 4K. Just like the Wii U was promoted as a true HD, 1080p machine, even though almost no games hit that. Just like Apple says your iPhone can get a certain amount of battery life, but they neglect to mention that will only happen with half the features turned off, and like 40% brightness.

This really isn't a big controversy.

I am sorry. I have not seen the masses on GAF that think that this is the case.

We have had 100 page long DF Scorpio tech reveal where the weaknesses of the X, along with its strengths were detailed...

However, If that console wars are raging in the background, then perhaps it is warranted :)

I was just reading a thread this morning where everyone kept saying the difference between the pro and the XOX was native 4k. I personally don't mind how they achieve 4k, but still, it was being said quite a bit.

Ofc, the usual suspects are all here denying that and accusing everyone of having an agenda. This place is a mess during E3.

Does dynamic 4k means that the game is 4k and can get lower or checkboarded?

Means that the game aims for a full 2160p, but that to maintain framerate and general performance it will dynamically lower itself down if need be. Ie, explosion goes off, loads of alpha effects, it drops to 1800p for a few moments before going back up to 2160p.

I think some people will be in for a shock when they realise some PS4 games render less than 1080p and upscaled lol

I'd expect dynamic resolution to be the preferred standard anyway, especially to prepare for the next iteration Scorpio2/XboxOneY (just like they suggested devs to use dynamic resolution on Xbox One to prepare for Scorpio).

Many seems to be under the impression that all X games will be native 4K especially after Phil's comments.

Gaffers know the whole story, but Spencer's presentation was clearly aimed at creating a widespread misconception on this point.

You have a point, but, that doesn't mean we can't/shouldn't call it out when we see it, regardless. Those companies should be called out as well.

"Everyone does it" is never the best excuse.

So what is "True 4K" and why is it better than what the Pro does (since Phil said the Pro is a competitor for the Xbox One S and not the X).

DF said that checkerboard is a really good compromise from native 4K and as others have said I expect that will be the standard going forward for quite a while. I think it's a fine technique that will serve X1X/pro owners very well.

I legitimately didn't know this. I've heard true 4K enough times coming from Microsoft to assume the majority of games would be running in native 4K.

I guess dynamic is better than upscalled but the selling point of the Scorpio was native 4k vs. the Pro's checkerboard.

Many didn't and think everything on XBONEX will be native 4k (& 60 fps)

Well, I never bought into the fantasy of 4k60fps (on anything but sports/racing/indie) but the whole, we are Microsoft publically acknowledging that the box we're saying doesn't even have any direct competitors in the console space isn't a true 4k machine, is new.

At least in writing/ straight-up promotional, official materials

what is this bullshit thread? OP, what should they do? Give the devs NOT the option to do with the hardware whatever they want?

Good info OP, thanks.

Everyone saying old news; maybe so, but its also been said by PR that the difference between this and PS4 Pro was "true" 4K and that stuck with a lot of people (including me) who might not follow every little tech detail revealed over the course of a year.

Oh my god you caught them!!!!! Or maybe they have said from the beginning that devs choose and this is console warrior bs.....

I think the issue comes from Phil spinning the BS about how the Pro isn't in competition with the X as it's not got the power for True (Native) 4K when we all know full well it does and has done so on various games. Same situation applies over both machines, developers choose how they use the power available. There is no doubting the XBX is the more powerful of the two machines, but the crap Phil spouts about it not being true 4K surely then applies to his own machine if it's using other techniques to get there sometimes?

He is selling the X to the masses within the time allotted.

Do you want him to go into a meandered speech about how certain games will tax the X to the point that native 4K will need to be abandoned?

I am baffled how you cannot see how silly that is for him to downplay a product that he is attempting to sell....

No where in the marketing does MS say that all games will be native 4K.

would be pissed if they didn't use checkerboarding. I would rather the developers use the extra power to add graphical affects over native 4k. We have seen incredible results on the PS4 pro and it's barely noticeable between the two according to Digital Foundry.

PR is always fun to watch when it crumbles.

Also to people saying old news yes it is but the point is just to highlight for those that can be easily sucked in by the "True 4K" or may misleading statements as shown by danhese007.

Does dynamic 4k means that the game is 4k and can get lower or checkboarded?
Former. iirc checkboarding isn't dynamic in the sense the base resolution used scales down.
No he didn't.
Hmmmmm...
