First Look at Chris Evans as Captain America

Green Lantern will be the best because of Campbell and reynold in the mix. It's got the best talent behind it and it has the least apparent studio restraint.

Thor went from "great in theory" to "awful in practice" with the horribly costumes and Natalie Portman's apparent sidekick character.

I have mild hope for this, but it all depends on how ham fisted the Director wants to get with jacking off America's "WE'RE #1" sensibilities.

I just don't care about X-Men movies, got no hope for that reboot.

Oh, I get it - he is white so he must be fascist right?
Well no because Maoists use it too, but it does use classic fascist iconography: the grim determined look that looks to a far horizon, and the daylight chiaroscuro.

Just stop after Ultimates Vol 2. Do not go to Volume 3.

That's classic propaganda imagery. It has nothing to do with fascism.

I'm in the middle of rereading The Ultimates volume 1. Captain America is sooo awesome in it.

Cap is a badass in it, but an asshole. Or at least he came across as an asshole to me during a lot of it.

But I am excited for the Cap movie. Of all the superhero movies next year, I do think Green Lantern will be the best (in Campbell we trust, and the leaked concept art is crazy), but I fear for X-Men First Class. Just not getting a good vibe from it for some reason.

wake me up when the comic book movie fad is over.

I hope its a long sleep for you then because of all the Hollywood milking out there I think this genre still produces good flicks and there is so much more potential yet. I dont read comics much but I love most of flicks and dc animated line.

P.S. Guys stop picking on my boyfriend!

The only one I have doubts in is X-Men: First Class and only because the movie X-Men have done little for me so far.

Matthew Vaughn is working on it. If anything it's the movie I have less doubts about.

How is Ultimate Avenger (I don't know the exact name, but I'm talking about Mark Millar's return to the series after departing for Ultimates 3)?

Well duh. He is a time shocked all american boy from back in the day. Course he is an asshole.

Plus its a Millar comic. Everyone is an asshole.

Looks like a more boyish Comedian. I loved the way that dude from Grey's Anatomy looked with his cigar and flame thrower. I wonder if the intent here with Captain America is to make him look similar but more quarterbacky (instead of rapisty)?

True. But I would rather they stick to classic Cap personality in the movie and not Ultimate Cap.

To be honest, Ultimates Vol. 3/Ultimatium were so bad - I mean, epically horrendously bad - that I stopped there. I haven't read a single thing from the new Ultimate universe.

It's ok, but nowhere near the level of Ultimates 1 and 2.

It's pretty clear now that the real strength behind Ultimates 1 and 2 was from Hitch's art, and not Millar's writing.

Oh, and I think Cap will be the best of the bunch.

You so crazy! I ranked all 4, but really I see 2 tiers - GL and X-Men (both of which should be quite good), then Thor and Cap several orders of magnitude worse.

That's the book I was referring to. I trust Millar. I'm still looking forward to reading that eventually.

I haven't heard anything good about Loeb's Ultimates 3. I'll probably read it if I can get it from my library system, but I won't spend any money on it.

So. Your stance is that all forms of propaganda are fascist?
There are degrees. There's a blurry twisty line between patriotism and fascism and it comes down to how the government intends to exploit the citizenry's nationalism. I would say that when propaganda stops being fascist it stops being propaganda and becomes useful information.

For instance, not propaganda:

That's disappointing. Hitch's art is certainly awesome. Oh well.

While I disagree, at least you articulated a point rather than lazily mashing ":lol " You could have just said this from the beginning, yes?

We shall see old friend. I have faith in GL based on the recent production art released. But having seen the actual sets built for Cap - I have more faith in that right now since I know that concepts don't always translate to finished product.

As for X-Men, the only reason I have an inkling of faith is because Singer is producing. I have no faith in Vaughn as director.

Then Thor just looks fucking horrid.

Cap is the only bet right now I would be most inclined to put money on - without it still being a sure bet.

Sorry, I thought you knew the definition of propaganda and were just going off the logical train.

...so you're just going to roll with the condescending thing, huh? Yes, I know perfectly well what propaganda is, and by your own words you think the line is blurry when telling two systems of government sponsored influencing media apart. Yet, you still want to pretend that disagreement equals ignorance. Stop being ridiculous.

Fine, show me some non-fascist propaganda then, smart guy.

Are you physically incapable of having a discussion without being a complete prick when coming across opinions differing from your own? Seriously, knock the shit off, or you can just argue in a vacuum.

Here is a collection of propaganda posters from WWII. By any definition of the word to date, they are propaganda. I disagree that they are also fascist.

"We Can Do It" is fascist. It promotes working for the state as a necessity for survival. The only way it could be more fascist is if it said "We Must Do It".

Interesting choice, but it seems clear with the use of "Rosie the Riveter" that the purpose of that poster was to tell women, who at that point were more often than not only told they could be housewives and baby makers - that they could do physical work. Not all that benefits a community/government is fascist, so "We must do it" doesn't necessarily make it so, either. Unless you are of the opinion that all government regulation, therefore all government education toward such, is fascist, I can't see how.

I don't know why people are talking propaganda - I thought the whole f'n point of Captain America is that he is created to be a WWII propaganda figure. He's basically a comic book John Basilone

Pretty much.

For anyone who doubts him i'd suggest watching the excellent 2hr documentary on Kick Ass.
which follows the movie from Inception to the final premiere.

Imo he has not made a bad film yet. Also i think people forget he was a producer before he became a director so he knows the pitfalls that usually trip directors up.

I actually really liked that. The whole nationalism got to the point where he became an asshole. That's the way i saw the Cap many times when i was younger, seein him punching commies in the face. Me not living in the states and all.

Loeb straight up murdered the Ultimate Universe. I just can't read anything from it any more after the abortion that was Ultimatum.

I never got into the whole "USA USA RAH RAH RAH!" thing with Cap, and I have never been out of the states. It was his authority and dignity that I always responded to in the books. A born leader that commanded gods, yet was just a mortal man.

Dead

well not really...yet
I won't be surprised if Cap is better than Thor. That comic-con preview was just rancid.

That was kinda the point. Cap was propaganda, but at the same time he was a real leader. People who focus solely on the propaganda angle to the characters, to me are just saying they haven't or rarely touched Captain America books.
