Metacritic - 86 (6 reviews)

Nintendo Wire - 9.5/10

The bottom line is this: If you've played one of the more recent, updated versions of Cave Story, there's nothing much for you here. If you've only played the original freeware release, then consider picking this one up, especially if you're interested in all the additions. And if you haven't played Cave Story at all... remedy that immediately, whether with this addition or one of the myriad of others. It's truly one of the finest experiences I've ever had the pleasure to play and write about.

App Trigger - 9/10

Cave Story+ is an absolute blast of a game. It's addicting, it's entertaining, and the multiple endings will keep you playing time and time again. It's one of the Switch's best releases and one you shouldn't miss out on.

Cub3d - 9/10

It's almost incredible how well Cave Story has managed to stand the test of time. It isn't a particularly old title, but its limited resources and one-man development team seem like a recipe for a dated entry. Instead, it manages to justify its existence in any given generation with each re-release. The Island has yet to lose its lustre, the characters their charm, and the level design that sweet balance of difficulty, which makes defeating a challenging boss or getting through a brutal platforming section all the more satisfying. Beneath the surface lies a poignant narrative about the consequences of war that takes itself surprisingly seriously without compromising the overall whimsical mood. Cave Story+ isn't just a good game in 2017; it's downright impressive.

Nintendo World Report - 8.5/10

Cave Story+ isn't the definitive version of Cave Story—I think that crown still belongs to the WiiWare version, but then again, that version isn't portable. I do miss the ability to switch graphical styles, but it's really the only regrettable absentee. Having no Pro Controller support is more concerning, but I'm hoping that sees a patch fairly quickly. The bottom line, though, is Cave Story is great and you should play it.

UPDATE: The game does support the Pro Controller. I thought this was not the case, as the D-pad and face buttons didn't work the first time I tried it (but the Pause button did). However, a second attempt was successful!

Video Chums - 81/100

Countless fantastic 2D action games released since Cave Story initially debuted yet it remains a wonderful experience that every genre fan needs to play. Now that it's available on Switch, even more gamers can see why it's such a timeless classic.

Switch Player - 4.6/5

More than ten years after its first release, Cave Story+ still holds its ground as the apex of its genre. There is hardly anything left to be improved upon regarding its gameplay, visuals, or soundtrack - and this plus version is truly the definitive release of the game. You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not adding it to your library.

MyGamer - 8.5/10

Comic Book - 4.5/5

Cave Story+ on the Nintendo Switch is simply the best way to experience what has, for so many years, been one of the best retro-inspired games ever developed. It's original, it's challenging, and it's fun. If you don't believe me, go read a thousand Steam reviews and see if you're not persuaded. You're late to the party, folks. Pick this one up now.

Gaming Age - A-

I think it's priced fairly at $29.99, but if you've played through the game on WiiWare, PC, and so on, there's not a lot of meaningful additions being made to this version of the game. It uses the upgraded visuals of previous ports, and does feature multiple soundtrack options, but outside of that it's essentially Cave Story as you remember it. Of course that is still a positive thing, but as someone who has played through the game a few times, I'd only suggest it to fans if you're either dying to play some more Cave Story, or looking to scratch a Metroidvania itch on the Nintendo Switch.

No Pro Controller support? What??

EDIT:

NWR reviewer is incompetent as hell. Tried Pro Controller once and then called it a day? lol

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I'm pretty excited for this, but obviously, I'm not playing it until they patch in pro controller support... cuz what the fuck.

Edit: Nvm, apparently it's good to go.

No Pro Controller support? What??

In shocking news, Nicalis are incompetent.

Anyone wanna make a guess about what gamebreaking glitch they missed this time that they'll take forever to patch out?

Edit: Still can't believe they don't have the graphical options in this version, cheap bumholes. Missing content when it costs somewhere multiple times as much as other versions isn't really acceptable

I don't even remember the first time I played CaveStory, probably the Wiiware version. Got excited about the 3DS version, but never picked it up. Guess I'll jump into this and finally best the game. It was great from what I remember.

NWR actually updated their review saying it does support Pro Controller

UPDATE: The game does support the Pro Controller. I thought this was not the case, as the D-pad and face buttons didn't work the first time I tried it (but the Pause button did). However, a second attempt was successful!

Do we have any idea when the European release date is?

The way they write makes it sound like that they only tested it once and didn't try a second test.

It's a little weird for NWR to call the Wiiware version the definitive one.

I pulled a comparison chart from here: http://cavestory.wikia.com/wiki/Version_differences

NiXPn1ml.png

Chart isn't updated for the Switch release. Outside of the option for the original graphics and some tweaks to the updated graphics, it's pretty much 1:1 with the PC release? I know Nicalis promised an update for co-op support later, right? That's about all they're adding to this release over previous ones?

How's the OST?

Top tier, if you're in to old school bit tunes at least.
The games main theme: https://youtu.be/aHtWKbR_P-c?list=PL0A12ED38862DB0F5
One of the boss battle themes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bXUTe9nqx8&list=PL0A12ED38862DB0F5&index=12

Edit: And this version has several remastered versions of the songs, which you might prefer is up to you, but here's the first remaster of the main theme from the Wiiware version

There are apparently another new set of remastered tunes for this version.

I am psyched to see this update on ProController support. That's a huge plus.

I haven't played this in 6 or 7 years, and I only played it one one time through
for the standard ending
, so I have no hesitation about double-dipping.

This has been in my backlog for a very, very long time now. It is super unfortunate that you can't switch the graphical style, but I think i will still give it a go. My Switch needs games and this looks like a good one.

I'm in.
I want more switch games and I've never played this
How's the OST?

Cave Story is what started the indie game movement.

It originally released for free on PC in 2004 and was made entirely by one Japanese guy in his spare time over the course of 5 years, including all of the music and sprite work. I think I remember Penny-Arcade forums had a big campaign for it to get Game of the Year and it almost won.

On a side note, I think the Bubbler may still be my favorite weapon in any video game and you can miss it!

Also dat music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFqoZf59MUo

Even though I like the original graphics more, I wish this had the 3DS version as an option. It'd make it easier to justify buying it again.

I've gotten the game sent to me early. Love the booklet that comes with it. If anyone wants to ask some questions about it feel free to ask. (It's not a review copy, I just got my previous order early)

never left the stone age
What's even *different* in the WiiWare version compared to Cave Story+? Lol, that review makes no sense to me.

I just pre-ordered the physical version. If it comes with a nice booklet, $24.00 is ok with me with prime discount. Would not spend $30 for the digital version.

Completed the game on Switch earlier this month. If you want footage of anything or have questions I'll do my best to answer them for you.

You can beat in about 6hrs on your first play.

Does it have the Machine Gun Challenge? Is there anything missing from Cave Story+ on PC outside of the ability to switch between old/new graphics?

Wait, is it just a booklet? I thought it was also including an Audio CD? Did that not happen or did you just not mention it? (I'm trying to decide whether it's worth importing :p)
