God of War Launches Early 2018 (PS4)

Yeah I've just never like Kratos as a character, it's hard for me to get over that. I like his depiction in this game though.
But you've never played the games? He's actually handled quite well in the first game, and even in the second, although any characterization falls off a cliff throughout the rest of the series. I've read that one of the handheld games actually does a decent story though as well

Fitting, as he's played Thor already:

I'm right with you. I played GoW3 remastered and Kratos was an absolutely terrible character and it made me hate the game. I haven't played any of the others so I don't know how they are. He looks much better in this one.

GoW 3 is where they ruined his character. GoW 1 was actually praised for its story and its characterization of Kratos; he wouldn't be as popular as a character if not for those early narrative foundations.

Yea, but, luckily we have Cory back to redeem this ruination. Bless him!

Not sure how people can say 3 ruined his character. They tried bringing him somewhat back in that game from GoW2's strikingly distant characterization (Cory admitted this as well, saying that they focused too much on the world surrounding him that they forgot to focus on the actual main character and what's going on with him). Him looking at Pandora and seeing a daughter was a good touch. The ending sequence where you play as him wandering through his mind, and forgiving himself from within, was an added bonus too I think.

While 2 is an excellent game, Kratos himself is virtually absent for the most part.

GoW1 has the best story and characterization of the series. You can sympathize with him.

GoW2 Kratos is a moron. He has
the ability to time travel and instead of saving his daughter and wife, he goes on a war against the gods.

Didn't notice it before, but you can really appreciate the animations when it's slowed down

Look at how every movement of the axe is weighty and how the hands twirl the weapon into the next attack and catch the downward momentum to swing into another blow. And then for the other attack, how Kratos is flipping the axe behind his back and catching it with his other hand.

I think that's part of what making the combat feel so heavy and forceful. By capturing the physical movement needed to pull off each strike, they can sell the weight and power of the attacks
Best looking game at E3 with Uncharted Lost Legacy not far behind.

I see, well it's good to know he started off well at least. Hopefully the new one will do him justice (seems like it will so far)

So what month do we think it releases? January? February? March?

I would bet March. Right around when Horizon launched this year. And I'm hoping Spider Man will be April or May. But it's hard to tell what part of the year they are aiming for.

I want to be Kratos for Halloween this year, I only have to let my beard grow from now on and gain 20-30lbs of muscle while keeping a 6-pack

surely its possible :*[

I agree, 3 tried to do something good with him but it didn't work quite well.
The story in 2 is nonsense but the game was pretty awesome regardless.
I'm convinced the new one will have the best script, they've got pretty cool writers this time.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
3 gave us the GOAT angry Kratos moment tho

While this is a good one, I think Kratos' slowly boiling over at Hera was amazing. There aren't any good gifs I've found of it but you can see his eye start to twitch and entire face shift to absolute rage.

Nope. Cory confirmed this was running on regular PS4 like last year and the maximum video quality of 1080p confirms it like for Horizon DLC; the only games not running on PS4 PRO. Even Shadow Of The Colossus Remake has 4K video quality.

The screens in the site too are 1920x 1080.
I didn't argue against the trailer being base PS4, just the screenshots.

Most of this year's new screenshots are available in 4K: http://gematsu.com/gallery/god-of-war/june-12-2017/

The 1080p shots look downsampled from the above 4K quality. The 4K shots have artefacts that lead me to believe they're legit captures.

Oh yeah, Ghost of Sparta is amazing, definitely recommend it if you haven't played it. Probably the second or third best gow.

So what month do we think it releases? January? February? March?

March.

that looks fucking amazing

I know right? There's a ton more photos on Instagram showing the detail and scale. Again I'd take a smaller version that looks exactly like that in a CE or hopefully Sideshow might replicate it.

Honestly, we what some journos were saying about the behind closed doors stuff and how far along it looks, I could see it dropping anywhere between January to March. Obviously this year Sony and partners had success in January with RE7 and February with Horizon despite March being tradition with the series. Basically I'm just hoping the sooner the better. lol

I'm surprised they haven't made the Collector's Edition available for pre-order given its contents got leaked weeks ago. It supposedly comes with a statue of Kratos and Atreus but I'm hoping it's a smaller version of this as opposed to what the leaked details said..

Size could be a 2-up,
Figures, statues, etc always have larger versions done before production.

With the new 3rd person camera my only concern was the combat and I’m happy it looks as good as the previous games. But I really hope there’s variety in weapons not only the axe. I also wish there’s some customization and we can play with old (I mean young lol) Kratos along with Blades of Chaos too

It's like the entire trilogy and PSP games are gonna make this game even better. Kratos now has an entire game to be the guy everyone wanted him to be. Those 3 games are now giving him a lot to go off of if you ask me.

Vengeance is what Kratos always wanted. Even those who didn't like where it went in GoW3 might enjoy how they bring it all together in 2018. 😍

Hell of a 2 up but it's just a statue that was commissioned to celebrate E3 it seems and resides in the lobby to greet visitors to Sony Santa Monica Studios.

Keep rewatching the trailer and...I totally missed the Thor statue when the world serpent emerges. lol

One of the things I'm stupidly excited for, and yeah a little early to think about, is the inevitable art book. I loved the last two and the Ascension book has to be single handedly the best art book made that I own. Stupidly heavy and those gold leaf pages with the ribbon bookmark..

What behind closed doors demo? What are they saying?

This is such a shocking thing for me.

Always appreciated GoW, but never any interest.

Unreal how awesome this looks though. The setting, the combat, amazing.

No demo but a extended trailer with Barlog giving details. Tim Gettys at Kinda Funny gave some great recap of the behind the closed doors stuff..

There's been a couple of articles put out too from Kotaku and GamesRadar who spoke to Cory who divulged more details about the Blades of Chaos being gone, Atreus being playable on certain combat situations and how you can teach him new skills and abilities to aid you as Kratos in battle and how that also obviously relates to the father/son dynamic in the story.

"Playable", or are they just talking about the button that makes the son attack?

This is why people complaining about the series evolving and changing mistily me. This game is going to get a lot of new people in to the franchise. That's awesome.

God of War 3 was my favorite because of the action, but 1 and 2 definitely had the better story and Kratos as a character. I always liked the series, but never loved it so didn't care so much about anything beyond the action itself.

I'm excited to see what they do here. I know Cory had some growing up to do and so has the studio but it still has several element of the original games. I just hope it has a solid combat system where you don't end up flailing around a lot.

Best wishes.

Well, the shield seems to have its own moveset, same for melee. Plus the boy is essentially a weapon, since you can customize his gear and have him attack during combat

1) Neverending Story being an influence confirms my speculation that the kid was named after the hero alter-ego in that movie.
2) Confirms skill-tree.
3) Confirms that there are separate skill-trees for father and son.
4) Apparantly kid is vulnerable if you choose to use his actions with circle button.

Cool to hear that there actually was more God of War material somewhere at E3.

Was looking up weapons from Norse mythology

I believe Kratos' new weapon is Forseti's axe; all the images on Google look very similar to the game's axe

What's the over-under that we get Mjolnir? Some other potential possibilities:
- Gungnir, a dwarf-forged spear wielded by Odin
- Ichaival, Odin's bow that would turn one arrow into ten when it fired
- Frey's sword, which was so battle attuned that it fights on its own accord
- Laevateinn, a blazing sword used by the fire god Surt

Whoa the whole game is one entire shot. Theres no cuts apparantly
What other games have attempted that besides Inside? (did Limbo do it too?)

The second game? how? It completely goes backwards in terms the development Kratos went through in the first title. And its probably the only GoW where rooting for Kratos over Zeus doesnt make sense. Zeus just wanted Kratos to stop his army from pretty much conquering the world, but he wouldnt listen. And the rest of the story is the God of War going crazy about killing him without ever thinking that maybe he"s the one who fucked up.

I wouldnt expect a deep story from GoW, but the first title actually raised my expectations. So when I played its sequel I couldnt understand what happened to the writers
