Rolling Stone: Top 50 albums of 2017 so far.

Glad Lorde is so high. Honestly, based on that list, it should be #1.

Album is that good. The only thing I can think of that is on the same level for me personally is Charli XCX's #1 Angel.

Drake's drivel above Jason Isbell's masterpiece. Okay. RS is clearly trying to make up for the days of rating classic rock over modern themes. Kendrick deserves it though, glad he's on top.

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
I actually attempted to read the rest of the list on the site but I just couldn't stomach it. Holy hell that website is fucking gutter trash.

Wow, didn't realize Feist released a new album this year
Also kind of surprised Gorillaz didn't make the list, although I suppose that shouldn't be too surprising since each the reception on it seems kind of divisive.

The Feist album is pretty good too. I went to see her perform it live last month.

Harry Styles actually released a great classic rock album. It's not poppy at all.

Ed Sheeran is a talented musician and singer, I'm not exactly sure why people here don't like him. He didn't have the best album, but it was good enough. And this year has been really slow on albums.

Really not sure what the issue is with Ed Sheeran. The guy is really talented.
I'm gonna need the receipts on that because all of his singles are mind-numbingly boring (and no not in a good downtempo way). They're not musically interesting, he doesn't have a standout voice, the lyrics aren't great and they're all mopey and uninteresting.

Idk about "recent turn" but I've disliked his music since it first started, the worst is he invades pop stations too which played at my job from a year ago. Yeah Ariana Grande and the like may not be amazing musicians but they're at least somewhat fun to listen to other than his garbage.

Unsurprisingly, it's your average masses-pleasing Rolling Stone list.

Also I dig Kendrick immensely, but I still can't get into DAMN (and I've tried).

I should check some of these out, I want to get into newer music but have trouble getting out of the grasp of the oldies. As a guy who listens to mostly rock from the 60's-80's, which of these would be good to try out?

More Life is No. 2? Forgettable album.

agreed

Damn above Culture?

yeah people will surely recall migos in 2018

Hndrxx is in the top 10, all is good in this world.

also agreed

I'm just happy RTJ is getting play nowadays. I'm a long time fan of El-P and seeing him explode has been awesome.

i felt this way about him & mike both
thought RTJ3 didn't resonate with me like 2 did

I've listened to More Life more than DAMN

i mean, of course you did

Hmm, I agree with at least a few of those, though I wouldn't worry about putting them in a particular order.

For me though, that list should also contain:

The XX - I See You
Spoon - Hot Thoughts
SOHN - Rennen
The Mountain Goats - Goths
London Grammar - Truth is a Beautiful Thing
Gorillaz - Humanz
Bonobo - Migration

Its seriously criminal that Brockhampton isn't on here.

also King Gizzard. Where is King Gizzard?

Edit: also 'Brutalism' by Idles and 'A Crow Looked at Me' by Mount Eerie.

You know mainstream rock music isn't doing too well when a Rolling Stone top 50 list has the first rock album at 13.

Heh, true.

Roger's new album is friggin great too. Tracks like Deja Vu and Smell the Roses are as good as prime-era Floyd.

Only album on that Top 20 I've listened to is Pure Comedy, and as a Father John Misty fan I thought it was his weakest effort by far.

I like far too much white-dude-with-guitar music; and I like Ed Sheeran (mostly) - but I didn't think the latest album was good at all. Castle on the Hill is a great roadtrip song, but that's about it.

Also Halsey? I don't understand the appeal there - can anyone explain? She's just like every other 'hey i dye my hair so I am interesting and sing inoffensive pop songs' singer.

Well first of all, Halsey is actually a tumblr girl (she got famous singing a parody of a Taylor Swift song). Basically her career is a little more organic than most. Plus she's actually interesting in a sense being tri-bi (bipolar disorder, biracial, bisexual) and actually seems to be staying true to her personality. Her new album is incredibly basic though in my opinion. Her first album Badlands was extremely good though and has some amazing production.

I was gonna give her a chance..and then I read her Wikipedia;

Halsey called Panic! at the Disco the "band that changed [her] fucking life"

I'm out.

(but really; listened to her stuff properly; you're right - the earlier music seems far more interesting. Still not really interesting enough for me, though.)
