A look at Youtube trailer views for E3 2017

Eh, AssCreed is getting a good response so far, based off both official trailers & long 20 minutes+ gameplay trailers.

Right. Which was why I was surprised that it wasn't higher up the list. Could be because the views have been spread thinner thanks to the multiple videos/trailers they have up though.

Unless I'm missing something, doesn't it have the 2nd most collective views of anything on that list?

You raise some valid points, but some of the points are not exactly what I consider damning. There are plenty of other videos of sizable views that has far lower/higher likes. I will acknowledge that the spike is pretty weird...

But at the end of it all, you yourself raise the most important point to keep it, given that at the very least, several million of his views are clearly legit. So I disagree with removing it since that has variable impact that cannot be quantified on our end other than guesstimate.

That being said, if you want to break it down by channel level, there is this so that you can exclude out channels you feel are iffy:

I think you should at least put an asterisk next to any video where Mathchief is a primary contributor.

Days Gone is another one that people were baffled by and, to no one's surprise, Mathchief has the top viewed upload for that.

To no one's surprise because Sony is downright incompetent at social media management the last 6 months. Mathchief got Sony's E3 trailers sooner than anyone and had millions of views on them before Sony got out theirs.

I'm trying to be relatively fair here. The reality is that the data does not suggest any major abnormality in the trending data of Mathchief's trailers. The broad logic of bought views/ads, etc also apply to various other channels like the Monster Hunter or Xbox One X trailers, which are clearly benefiting from ad-runs, etc.

Below are the data, just looking at Mathchief trailers I have:

Why no inclusion of Ori Will of Wisps ?

Because I forgot.

LOL MathChief

Fuck. I wonder how much money he made off of those uploads, if any?

The official title is Marvel's Spider-Man. Look under M

Thanks, your marvelous!

The Days Gone gameplay trailer from last year has over 7M views. A few are "baffled" because they are out of sync with market realities.

Definitely. Walking Dead averaged 15 million viewers this season and this game looks to be Walking Dead Daryl. This game can make a killing with the right marketing

Disbelieving high numbers seems not motivated by the desire for higher quality numbers but rather that the individual's pet game isn't on top.

Game would have looked quite good to me if I wasn't a bit tired of those stealth mechanics, which are quite similar to Horizon's and probably other open world games I don't know about.

But that's me not being a huge fan of the genre. In a year, when the game launches I won't be as tired.

If the game truly is based around emergent gameplay, I'll be there. It's a mechanic I really like in games.

But we do get more games from it.

Yep, the game announcement this E3 that garnered the biggest reaction was probably Metroid Prime 4. The reason why it took so long for a new Metroid to be announced is because the series doesn't sell well. If it did then it'd be on a more traditional development cycle like the rest of Nintendo's core franchises.

Days Gone has gained 200k since your last update and Spiderman 2.4 million. Seems legit. Spiderman was definitely outpacing Days Gone by 12 to 1 up til now..

Last year, the God of War reveal gameplay, along with Battlefield 1 E3 trailer, was outpacing every other trailer by around 8-1, even though all of them hit the 3-4 million mark at around the same time.

This year, unquestionably Spidey and Mario will outpace every other trailer by a fair margin.

So yes, the biggest trailer with the largest 'word-of-mouth', so to speak, does end up outpacing every other trailer by a huge margin once other trailers hit their "peak" views.

I always wonder why we do this. Why do we proudly proclaim that a product will sell like gangbusters? We don't get any money from it.

Because people are excited for the game and are happy to see that this excitement is widespread?

What a weird thing to get upset about.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Monster Hunter World is at 5.4m views from Monster Hunter + 2.4m from Capcom + 1.4m from McKIceAndFire totaling about 9.2m views.

I think this is the most viewed Monster Hunter trailer/video ever.

Yeah but unfortunately it's not organic virality, but rather ad runs like Xbox One X trailer. It's not even a mix like Ubisoft titles where you have some advertisement and some word of mouth but it's mainly being pushed due to ads.

It's still good as the 1.4M views channel likely doesn't do that.

Update as of 22nd June 2017:

Changes:
- included 4 channel links respectively for Ace Combat 7 and Ori 2
- a separate individual links table for those who wants to see a non-aggregated view count

Once again, credit goes to trigger & benny for their great help on this matter. I wouldn't be able to do a 1/5th of these without the significant quality of life and script wizardry. :)

Here's the table with the secondary view with individual links by channel.

On a different note, I've spoken with benny_a that I'm going to ramp this down since there's not much more interesting insights to gather from this in the short term, other than seeing which trailers are aggressively doing ad-inflation, like Monster Hunter and XB1X.

Maybe there'll be one more update within a week, but after that we'll only revisit this a few months later to see which trailer this year is the equivalent of last year's GoW trailer, which had LONG legs.

Very cool and insightful, also, nice scripting for this.

What are you using to do this? Python? Scraping web pages or using a library to help pull this data?

Ask benny_a for this. All I'm doing is doing pivots and excel by taking advantage of people doing the great work.

I'm using Hylang as I'm not a fan of the Python syntax but wanted to try to get familiar with at least one language that has Python interop as Python is super popular and has many useful libraries.

It's just querying the Youtube REST API.

Nice! I share your feelings on Python syntax, but I love pip and how easy it is to find a library that'll do anything you'd ever want.

Hy <> Python reminds me on Kotlin and Java. If you use Java, I'd recommend looking at Kotlin as it also can be transpiled into JS.

I'm presuming you used the Google api client pip package in Hy? Never even knew Google provided these!

Surprised Monster Hunter World has so many views. The series isn't that big in the West, right?

If you look at the view/like ratio, it stands at 0.12% for the main MHW trailer, which stands for heavily ad-run inflated.

They are views that are being watched, but they aren't organic growth where people are actively searching for the trailer and watching them on their own volition, but are being served as advertisements instead.

In general, one can be skeptical of anything with a V/L ratio below 0.5%.

I thought the BGE2 trailer would have a lot of more views, at least a million or so. Kind of sad to see such an excellent and well-crafted trailer be on the number 80.

EDIT: Wait, it actually has 838K views on Ubisoft's channel, not the 650k as listed in the table, plus 325K on another channel.
