I was older than the target audience, and only started reading them after the third movie, but I still have wonderful memories of the franchise. I love it.

I remember my elementary teacher reading it to us when it first came out. Holy hell does time fly.

...and his career as an auror was less exciting that his life as a delinquent at Hogwarts.

Prove me wrong, J.K.

Happy early birthday you wizard. I still remember when the series was huge and there wasn't a film yet, I used to the Chamber of Secrets all the time with my mom.

Man these books were so fucking good when I was a kid. I didn't really read books and was disappointed when my grandma got me the first one. Then I just fucking loved it. I do prefer the times before the films because I the images I had of the characters in my head were better than the ones in the films, and after the films came out I couldn't imagine them like I used to :p

I don't remember when I read the first few books, but I know I read the last two the week they came out.

Haven't seen any of the films after Order of the Phoenix though.

Thank you for letting me know how old i am. If I ever have kids i'll read HP to them like my mother did.
Read it alone at the third chapter. Was my first book without any pictures in it lol.

One if not the best fantasy story of all time. Screw most of the movies and games though. So much potential.

Man so many good memories lugging these books around school and when I'd do errands with my mom. I've probably re-read them a good amount of times, but it's pretty difficult to go back nowadays.

We need a live series with Game of Thrones levels of production.

Fucking this.
And a video game not made by EA.

I reread all of them every few years. Takes me like 2 weeks. Then the melancholy train is hitting me.

Greatest Books ever. So many childhood memories. The only book series I read as a child and the only ones I still read yearly. I fricking love Harry Potter.

To make matters even better, J.K Rowling is also an amazing person too. Check out her twitter.

Pretty crazy. I remember going to a couple of the book release parties at Borders (RIP) back in the day when I was a kid.

The best guy they could get to write the introduction was Percy? lol

I adored those books. The ending of Half Blood Price got me really emotional and I remember reading Deathly Hallows in an absolute panic as people kept fucking dying.

And what a twenty years it has been.

Shoutouts to Eurocom's amazing Chamber of Secrets game for GameCube/PS2/Xbox from 2002, complete with a soundtrack from the guy who composed Morrowind.

Also have a fondness for the PC version, as well as the PC and even PS1 versions of the Philosopher's Stone.

Lost a fair bit of interest in the films (and obviously the games) after Chamber of Secrets, never lost my interest in the books though.

I know what I'm reading next...

Milestones like this always remember me how fast time flies by. 20 years is a long time but I feel like it's yesterday when I bought the book as a youngster.

I just finished marathoning the movies with my 8 year old this past weekend and it was a surreal experience as I vividly remember watching these in the theatre. I didn't know it up until said marathon, but these movies mean more to me than I give them credit for.

About the first book/movie/game, it'll always be The Philosopher's Stone in my books (literally).

Was a stupid name change to The Sorcerer's Stone for the US market.

Just a heads up that they're releasing special house themed editions of Philosopher's Stone for the anniversary.
Bought the Slytherin one off Amazon earlier this week, might actually get all four, especially if they do a similar thing for the rest of the series.

Didn't even know about the series until just before the third book released, was absolutely anti-Harry Potter until someone got me a set of the first three for christmas and one day when super bored I gave it a read.

Read and reread the whole series each time a new book came out.

Unfortunately, really disliked the last book (she really needed an editor, and she should have had more foreshadowing in previous books/less ass pulling).

But still, a great ride. Happy B-Day.

Almost gave me a heart attack thinking that the movies came out 20 years ago. Almost forgot about the books too.

Still, good times for sure to have a generation growing up with this series.

I liked it at the time (though not as much as The Half-Blood Prince), but now that it's been 10 years, I agree with you.

Some of it came out of nowhere.

I don't think I'll ever connect to another piece of fiction the way I connected to those books. How refreshing it was to my 13 year old self to read about intelligent relatable kids portrayed in a non-patronising way in adventures that were well plotted, exciting and with actual stakes. It's all I ever wanted and this series delivered in spades. It also improved me as a person and is one of, if not THE main reason why I now know English.

Long live HP. And J.K. Rowling too, she rocks <3

They were trying to grab your prize. They work for the mercenary. The masked man.
Weird timing, today I was googling around to try to figure out how Harry Potter got so big initially. Now that I type that out it still would've been weird even if there was no anniversary.
