COMICS!!! |OT| June 2017 - AquaBDSM : Sunstone but with dolphins.

it's a pendulum for some - they borked it today but if they switch things up & get exciting (& consistent) creative teams going - much less support them - none of this will matter, guess we'll see...but it feels inversely proportional to how many books they give bendis at this point

They don't have a lot of the huge names that they used to. Everyone went to Image to make bank and now we're seeing the effects of that.

I don't know nearly as much about the big two as many of you but, damn, it's so weird to read so much Marvel hate. This thread was exactly the same a few years ago except DC were the bad guys.

I've said this. It's a known thing. Which is why folks can have their rage and hate. In a few years, we'll be back here again and I'll be saying the same things again. If Marvel goes light, no biggie. Gives me more room to pick up other books.

I hope Gwenpool sticks around until people figure out how to use her as a cameo. Hastings seems to be the only one with a grasp of the character (though the Secret Empire cameo wasn't as bad as some others)

So Diamond is doing a 12" Venom statue as part of their Marvel Premiere line. Looks decent. I'll wait until I get their Thanos next month and decide based on that. Paint application on this one looks a little iffy.

Is it me, or does the head look a bit too small? Maybe it is the angle.

Marvel isn't losing money so they aren't worried about that. Of course that affects their decisions for better or worse.
True, but when they drastically lose sales on key 'hot' properties like Deadpool, to name one example I'm ticked at, due to wonky business decisions, they'll have to realize the problem. I know Marvel isn't going to be on the 'verge of bankruptcy' anytime soon due to Hydra Steve and the MCU pushing people to those comic lines. But these variant covers and absurd decisions on book lines push the diehards away. There has to be some sort of middleground without blaming things on diversity.

I've been enjoying Marvel Unlimited though, DC can take the heat for that.

Definitely. Zarcone's art is such a perfect fit for Castellucci's writing. If you haven't already, I'd highly recommend Doom Patrol too. They complement each other very nicely and are hands down my favorite books every month.

Mother Panic is pretty solid too. I'm a bit behind, but it's a cool, 90s Vertigo styled take on a new hero in Gotham.
One review I read compared Shade's style to dream pop and shoe gaze. Fits pretty well imo. (also <3 dream pop)

I have checked out Doom Patrol. It looks good and is interesting but its weird and I have no idea what's happening. So ill probably read more of it eventually but I'm not in a hurry

I avoided her book for awhile because of it. She's way more interesting than a "random" character with no moral compass

I wonder what they plan on doing with Riri when Tony returns. Banner is probably returning in the new Planet Hulk story so the same applies there. Wave 2 book(s)?

We'll see how things unfold. If things reach a certain point they'll do something.

yeah, and i don't know how soon they can get any of them (hickman, brubaker, remender etc) back...kinda ties to their biggest problem: they're always gonna attract top talent with their characters, but outside of the biggest names (bendis, etc) they're forever terrible at cultivating/keeping them. Bru gave them cap material for movies & beyond, Hickman did more universe building than even the ultimate line saw, i'd argue.

right now, jason aaron & lemire are writing some of my favorite books & filling in those gaps nicely. but they need to be working to keep guys like coates, wilson etc. why spencer was chosen for the universe-wide event, i'll never know (and i loved his sam-cap book)

There are some Marvel books I greatly enjoy and look forward to every month, but the company direction as a whole has been kind of aimless for some time. They don't know what they're doing or who they're doing it for. All they know is that their sales are slipping and they can't puzzle out why. Pricing definitely has something to do with it, but I also think people are just tired of events. That, and they're no longer falling for Marvel's near-constant rebrandings. Whereas in the past six years. DC has rebranded twice. New 52, and Rebirth. They had a clear idea of what they wanted to do to draw in new readers and they stuck with it. Marvel is having trouble committing.

Cave Carson is a really fun book. I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I initially thought I would. It's still solicited through September at least, so it hasn't been canned as of yet. We'll see what happens if Messi starts reading it, though.

What was DCYou?

I don't read cave.

RiRis book is fantastic Btw.

Lemire has left.

I guess this means the All-New Falcon is getting put in limbo after existing for like a year?

It feels like they don't have a clue what to do since Secret Wars ended and Hickman and Remender left, so they're just throwing shit at a wall to see what sticks. Giving Bendis the first big crossover event after that and making it Civil War 2 just made it look like they panicked.

You keep saying it's cyclical but I don't see it. DC was a mess during the new 52 era six years ago, it was a mess ten years ago during Countdown to Final Crisis, it was a mess in 2004 when Identity Crisis came out, and already that's most of what you'd call the Modern Era.

The downturn Marvel is currently taking is unprecedented in recent memory, and it comes from practices that are unique to Marvel. Things will only get better for them if they get their shit together, and I do not trust the current leadership to do that.

Rereading Day of Future Past made me realise how people didn't realise the X-Men were on humanitys side when their enemy is called the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. They have Evil in the name FFS.

Also how long before they stop discribing the smell of Nightcrawler's bamfs? It's been every time so far.

Nightcrawler's BAMFs will forever be described as smelling like sulfur. Forever.

The 788 thing was just a bleeding cool rumor in regards of the return to legacy numbering for Amazing Spider-Man?

Spider-Woman and Spider-Man 2099 are canceled?

I want y'all to know you are fucking up if you aren't reading Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. What a wonderful perfect little book. Natasha Bustos is creating such wonderful art to go with an engaging story and main character.

Spider-Woman is already gone. Had a lovely final issue.

Gwenpool has lasted way longer than anyone expected.
It's really gat damned good.

It still shocks me how many people dismiss it, only to read it and realize "oh shit this is fantastic". Gwen Poole is very different than Gwen Stacy and Deadpool.
Havent read much from the series, but I think I am totally wrong listing Gwenpool as a Spider-Line book?
AAAAAAAHHHHHHH'

T__T

Please read Gwenpool.

I will, but its a book which I think is going away sooner then later and I like to read those when I have all trades.

Absolutely

Thanks. Another category that I can kill.
