I'm using the wraith spire with my 1700 and I have 3.9 ghz @ 1.325 volts. Just go for around 1.3V for 3.7 GHz. You're pretty much guaranteed to be able to get 3.7 ghz out of it.

Soldering a die so small leads to chances of cracking the die.

You say that, but from all reports AMD is having ridiculously good yields for Ryzen and they solder them.

I get about 40-70C(absolute max it gets to) at 3.9. Amd says you're fine if you're under 95, but I'm not fond of pushing that envelope(Not that I've ever seen my 1700 get anywhere near it).

Does it represent value for money? What would be a good price?
How capable would it be for sim racing and FPSes at 1080p/60?

Got an old board lying around you can swap out yours with? Otherwise break out the voltmeter.

My buddy followed my advice and upgraded his 2500K/GTX 590 to a 1060 6 gig. He installed it, and everything worked great for a short time, then it shut off. Turns out his CPU is pegged at 100% load constantly, and keeps shutting itself down.

The new card only uses about a third the power of the old one, and if he runs it without a card, or with the old one, it does the same thing, so I don't believe the PSU could be the problem.

He's checked the task manager, and no one process really stands out as the culprit. He's in the process of uninstalling all drivers, but apparently that is a slow process because of heat issues.

Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone experienced anything like this?

As usual, check your motherboard CPU compatibility on the vendor site. If you are lucky you might be able to use it with a bios update if it's physically compatible.

Check if the power supply is under warranty first. Some of them have pretty long warranties. Motherboards are really hard to breakdown, and even if it had a problem you'd likely at least see a warning light or an attempt to boot. Granted, a power supply can take a board with it.

My temps have been 40-70c on the stock cooler that comes with the 1700 @ 3.9 ghz. With an aftermarket you have nothing to worry about on that front.

Intel launched a new high end platform so the new mobos are currently as expensive as they are going to get. RAM keeps getting more expensive every week, and various Graphics Cards prices are really high because of cryptocurrency miners.

But the prices of Ryzen, and Skylake are fine. I would say it is only a bad time if you are aiming for the highest end, then I would say you should wait for AMD threadripper and the intel i9 chips that are still left. AMD Vega is also coming in the next months, hopefully the miners don't go for them right away.

edit: Seems like some people are already on waiting mode for Coffee lake, that would be replacing Kaby lake as well.

Maybe they were trying to get past 4 ghz? From what I understand the temps do start going out of control past that point for most Ryzen 7s. Beyond that my 1700 has been remarkably cool. I was going to get an aftermarket but the stock cooler has given me no reason to, it's quiet and does the job.

1050 will definitely be better between those two, but get 1050 Ti instead since there's a 4GB variant of that.
RX 560 4GB is also an alternative.

If you mean now + next year then a 1070 or even a 1060 6. If you want it to run things on high for the next 3-4 years then maybe a 1080. If budget truly isn't a concern then why not a 1080 ti and you'll be set for several years at 1080p.

I know you said your limit is $600 but Massdrop has the Ti variant of the same card. It comes with Destiny 2 which you can sell for at-least $30 in the sales thread. Only downside is it ships in July but for $20(if you sell Destiny 2) extra you can get a Ti.

SSDs are either SATA (natively laptop compatible, may require an adapter for desktop if your case doesn't support 2.5" drives), PCI or M.2 (so for desktops and your mobo needs to support them).

Also depending on your mobo you *may* need to tweak some bios settings, but newer motherboards (i.e from the past 3-4 years) should be able to deal with an SSD without extra fiddling.

Not sure what Massdrop is, but I actually want the card for destiny 2. I really don't want to go over 575, but I know by the time I add shipping, etc I'll probably be at 600.

Put the Wraith cooler on my Ryzen 1700 and realized I'd tightened it in a fashion that made it so the fourth screw couldn't be tightened. Had to remove the cooler, go to Microcenter to get thermal paste, come back home to clean off all the thermal paste that had been smudged and would probably bubble if I tried to re-use it, and then apply new thermal paste.

Put too much thermal paste on so that it was seeping over the edges of the CPU when the cooler was tightened. Removed cooler again and cleaned it off. Put smaller pea-size paste on this time and it was much better. Gonna wrap up the build later this week when I swap over my old SSD/HDD and GPU.

I might be mistaken, but it looks like the motherboard you chose is for AMD processors and would not work for the CPU you chose.
The rest seems reasonable enough, although I'd recommend aiming for a 250GB SSD so you won't have to worry so much about space.

Don't think there is a big reason to go blower type in ITX cases anymore, the TDP is so much lower when people decided that. I run my system heavily overclocked with more TDP in a Node 304, GTX 970 1550/3850mhz, i7 7700k 4.8ghz.

something similar happened to me a few times. use core temp and look for abnormal temperatures. In my case I had to reapply thermal paste to the cpu cooler.
