What creator/writer ruined the lore of their property overtime the most?

I'm sure a lot of people are going to think of George "Midichlorians" Lucas, but my answer is going to be Chris Metzen and the lore of Warcraft.

The mess of lore rewrites, retcons, and poorly constructed stories to facilitate WoW's ever expanding playable world did a number on the Warcraft world players had come to love. I completely checked out when the Dranei were reintroduced, rewritten, with trandimensional space ships whose technology the blood elves stole.

I think Naruto lore became stupid with Alien life forms being thrown in being the cause of chakra or something.

I was super into Warcraft lore as a kid, but looking back, it wasn't really any better than the stuff today.

I think the biggest problem is the same problem Simpsons and countless other properties have: it's been going for so long that there's not a lot to do without completely changing things up.

i saw metzen at blizzcon 2009 hanging in a private bar booth and it looked like all that WoW coke money really went to his head

Midichlorians gets a bad rep ... they are by far the most nothing of the changes =P

My vote goes to Ridley Scott and Alien

Honestly, what do you guys think about Evil Dead? The trilogy is ace, but the TV show has some weird things, even though generally I'm down with the direction. This is personally one of the coolest fictions for me. But, it sounds like they recognized an error since Season 2 and plan to redirect.

But that Alien mention is is a good one. While Alien 3, 4, and Avp/2 weren't great films, they didn't ruin lore for me. But Prometheus and Covenant did.

My answer is probably The Simpsons. They've been a shell of their former selves for almost 2/3rds of their run now.

Unfortunately Akira Toriyama and Dragon Ball. Though much of it due to editor/publisher pressure and his failing interest. But ultimately he should have shut shit down and not just kept dragging things out post Frieza. It's not always easy to know when to stop.

To this day, I'm not sure people realize midochlorians don't cause the force in an organism, they just show force sensitivity/potential in it

Aye, they weren't entirely necessary, but they weren't as stupid as folks make them out to be. They were just a translation mechanism to bridge the gap between the sci-fi and fantasy aspects of Star Wars, little Microbes that translated space magic into things your cells could do (shoot lightning, see the future, etc).

For me it's has to be the Dexter creator, can't remember his name. Things just kept getting crazy. It was okay then it went off a cliff. Much like the t.v. series.

Warcraft became really bad, but Starcraft gives it a run for its money. Wings of Liberty was so bad that there's absolutely no way the other two sequels (which I haven't played) salvaged that disaster.

Really, there just came a point where Blizzard seemed to stop caring about writing anything halfway decent.

They were trying to grab your prize. They work for the mercenary. The masked man.
Ridley Scott, George Lucas, Chris Carter, Tim Kring, the guy who made Donnie Darko.

This probably isn't the worst but it's the closest to my heart- ASOIAF and game of thrones both.

How?

EDIT: I think people need to differentiate between lore and some story conclusions that they didn't like. Lore is more about worldbuilding than plot details.

Ridley Scott tops Lucas at this point. He's actively trying to ruin the mystery behind the franchise he created with fucking abominable and convoluted backstory. At least Lucas knew when to step away.

Sony

Nintendo
Definitely Akira Toriyama. Super Saiyan God? Super saiyan God super saiyan? Tingly feeling? Gtfo with that

Probably Ridley Scott by attempting to introduce a backstory to a series that never needed (or even really had) one, and then getting it all thematically confused and fucked up with Blade Runner.

i love this topic because it's another form of this:

the more i learn about [this IP / property / universe], the less i enjoy it.

It's just that I can't think of any other than Star Wars. And get out of here with the ASOIAF shit. You're confusing 'the story getting away from GRRM' with 'the creator returning to the creation too many times to explain things that don't need explaining.'

They might have retconned it to be that but the clip from TPM has Qui Gon literally saying without them there would be no life without them and that they speak the will of the Force. That initial explanation has them sounding far more integral and important than just some microbes attracted to Force sensitive users. A central element to all life and the Force. It's dumb shit that serves no purpose but to undermine the mythos of the Force by trying to make it sound scientific when it's anything but, which is a major freaking point of it. Believing in something intangible.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Sorry folks. You all lose to Games Workshop and how they have handled Warhammer and Warhammer 40K these last few years. Holy fuck they are going out of their way to fuck things up and retcon all manner of shit.

I got halfway through HOTS and gave up. Wings of Liberty is probably the best RTS I've played, and its mission design makes the original game look like it was constructed of tinker toys. But the story absolutely dived. Retconning everything to make space for THE EVIL BIG BAD BEHIND EVERYTHING and turning Kerrigan and Raynor into moping lovebirds was tragic.

At least Chris Metzen isn't there anymore. Now his green shamanistic Jesus isn't as overpowered. We only have to deal with demonic-elf Jesus and pun-magician Khadgar.

The major knock against ASOIAF lore is that many of his great house family lines last an implausible amount of time (thousands of years in some cases). The slow tech buildup can be explained away by the messed up seasons I guess. The rest is pretty solid.

The obvious examples have already been named so... This might be a little harsh and it's not his own property but Chris Claremont went into some weird directions when he came back to the X-Men in the 00s. But I wouldn't say he ruined them, plenty of other people lined up to do it for him.

Anyway, Ridley Scott. For all the shit people give the prequel trilogy, it introduced a number of cool new things to the Star Wars lore even though Lucas handled them poorly including podracing, other types of lightsabers, the sith/Darth maul whereas the new Aliens have introduced...David?

The one that affects me the most is Ridley Scott. Explaining away the mystery of the engineers was a crime against film.

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?
Ridley Scott x 1,000,000

Fuck what that guy is doing to the Alien franchise. It's infuriating.
