John Romero is selling his original Doom II disks

They made him buy a retail version of the game? Why would anyone buy those with no signature, then you’re just paying for a 23 year old game on media that’s not readily available.

Are you aware that a pair of socks that belongs to me, is worth considerably less than a pair of socks that belongs to Tom Cruise?

It is not the item itself of note here, rather who the item belongs to and their relation to it, which in this case is significant. Also says they can be signed if buyer wants.

It buffles me that some people are so discconected with the real world to not know this.

Better this people dont find out what some people pay for children card games cards lol

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.

Currently at $317. He will also sign them if you want.
Could I pay him to write that he's sorry for Daikatana?

:)

Anyway obviously these are not worth much unsigned so whoever buys this needs to get his sig on there but aside from that who's to judge what they find collectable?

There is absolutely nothing special about Doom II floppy disks.. If you want romeros signature its better to have it on cover art or the game box.

Just Floppy disks are the most boring investment you could make.

Man, you're on every thread, usually saying stuff that isn't very positive regarding what people are discussing, why?

I would love to have these signed but I don't want to fork over that much cash for floppy disks. Although, it's not a bad deal considering other collectibles you can get that cost much, much more.

I would bid on these but I just yesterday won an Alyssa Milano poster I had as a kid, so my ebay quota has been met.

How can he be hurting for money this badly? I thought he was doing pretty well for himself.

He is doing pretty well. He sells his stuff since the end of 90s 'cause he got a shitload of gaming and IDsoft and Ion Storm stuff around. And his Romero Games' Studio in Galway is doing okay. He got some funding, Gunman Tacco sold around 7000 copies and right now he's working on two bigger titles. One of them is an dark third-person-title with a Cherokee fighting supernatural forces of evil or something.

Disappointing that there's no box, but still cool for collectors. I'd love to have my old Amiga/C64 stuff. Still have my NES but in terrible condition.

Those wondering why he is selling these should look at his ebay history. He sells brick a brack stuff from the early days, but also copies of his book for hundreds of dollars. I cannot even see that they are signed, just valued as such because they are from him. I very much doubt it has anything to do with needing the cash.

Lol at people buying paintings that are 200 years old for 20 million

Bad comparison. The painting is unique. The floppies might be, if he signs them, and hasn't signed other sets.

A better comparison would be a limited edition print.

I feel bad for whoever tries to justify this as if its actually buying art or a collectible rarity. This isn't buying a painting or anything like that. Its more like buying the picture frame the painting was once in, from the original painter who happened to find it.
It's just the encasing of something once great.

There's a reason nobody collects floppy disks.

maybe he just wants to sell some cool stuff to collectors instead of it gathering dust?

why do people always assume the worst?

Yeah for real, the guy probably got most of his stuff free or close to it, and the collectors market isn't really going to get bigger. It's a pretty good deal for him, and its not like he won't be able to play the game again

You're really trying to make this type of arguement on a video game forum?

Man wouldn't these go for way more if he autographed them?

So pieces of gaming history are not important?

I feel sad seeing how you guys talk about him. He made mistakes, of course, but the man is a legend. Helped change gaming forever. Give him some damn credit, even if he wants to sell that part of his life.

Really? I feel sorry for him...
Come on bruh there hasn't been texacos for like 15 years man

Vintage Texaco stuff has a weird following in the southwest for some reason. I once worked with a dude who got a huge Texaco tat on his forearm just for the nostalgia factor.

If I met John in person I'd buy him a beer and listen to what he had to say. But I mean, he also had an ego the size of the titanic and his unique cocktail of bad management and hubris simultaneously wrecked the company of his (and other's) dreams and produced one of the worst big budget videogames of all time. I'm definitely going to make jokes about this online.

Maybe I'm missing something, but couldn't he have many copies of the game and just be selling one set of disks? What's special about these disks (apart from the fact he will sign them if you want)?

I mean, couldn't he have just bought a copy of Doom 2 on ebay and be re-selling the disks for a 10000% markup?

People buy expensive "historical" items as status symbols, they don't actually care whether they're legitimate. What would the difference be anyway, objectively. The fact that the two sets of disks had sat in different drawers for the past two decades?

Damn, dude must be needing some cash real bad. Ebay sellers are going to make him his bitch. Looks like he's going to suck it down.

okay, i mean, i get that it was a funny ad and it will probably never stop being funny

but not only was it not romero's idea (the blame for that is on mike wilson), but he actually disapproved of running it in the first place

just saying

it just seems mean-spirited to keep grabbing for that low-hanging fruit whenever someone wants to take shots at the man, especially when he apologized for it ages ago
