Is this name too similar to Bin Laden?

He's going to learn about Bin Laden in school. The kids will call him Bin Laden.

Yep. Bin Laden's name is irrevocably attached to 9/11. 9/11 explains a lot of the world's current political context so there's no doubt that kids are going to learn about it, and if they're learning about 9/11, they're going to hear the name Bin Laden.

Honestly though, I don't think the name is going to stick unless your kid looks Middle Eastern. If he does, he's going to become a target for sure.

NO fear brother, long as his middle name is Kenobi he will be fine.

Name your kids whatever the hell you want. Mean kids will tease him if his name was John Smith. (One my my kids is named Ramesses )

I really don't get all those people who think Bin Laden will fall into oblivion. Is he far more important in US history than Khomeini, yet we all know who Khomeini is and most of us were probably not even alive in 79.

He will at best be called 'Ben Ladan' by evil classmates. This is the first rule of name selection. What does it rhyme with or sound like.

I disagree.
Don't name him that.

Please look for another name unless you want to risk your son being associated with 9/11 which kids will learn about via the web or via their teachers.

Kids regardless of how old they are in school will absolutely make the connection and they will totally all call him Bin Laden to make fun of him

You can still call him that I guess but don't listen to posts that "kids won't know/make the connection". They totally will and it will absolutely be something people target him for.

All that has to happen is one kid remembers it. Then he spreads it around and everyone says it.

I'd think of something else. If not for kids but the fact that you yourself are making the connection I wouldn't want to have that in the back of my head whenever I say his name

Call him Todd.

Todd Lada is an awesome name.

Or Richard, short form it for dick, and always write his name Lada, Dick.

Lol, sounds like something out of a Seinfeld episode.

But if he doesn't deliver...a lifetime of disappointing people. That's a helluva roll of the dice.

I say throw caution to the wind! See what happens!

It's just a child, you can always try again.

Not really - but you can't name him that now, or else you'll always think about Bin Laden when you see/write/say his name. You ruined it for yourself.

Let's be honest, if kids are going to bully your kid, they'll come up with a name to call him no matter what you pick. If your kid is cool, he won't get bullied no matter what his name is.

The majority of Americans would have no idea who the fuck that is if you brought up the name in casual conversation. Real talk.

Even if kids still know about Bin Laden, they will be so removed from 9/11 it won't be much more than a joke to them and probably to young Benjamin Lada as well. This "Oh my god, you CANNOT name your kid that. Think of the bullies!" reaction is a little hyperbolic.

I taught a group of 12-14 year olds this winter who had no idea what 9/11 was until I explained it in detail.

Yes but not all names invite comparison to one of the most important terrorists in human history.

No one he grows up with is even going to know who Bin Laden is, and the adults that do should be mature enough to mention it - assuming they make the tenuous phonetic connection in the first place.

I think it's fine, if you like the name, use it.

Bin Laden is going to be as known to future generations of kids as Lee Harvey Oswald was to ours.

Which is to say, sort of known by the kids into dark moments of history, but not exactly a household name in general.

Is this real

The life your kid leads is going to matter a lot more than how much you like the name. There are a million names out there. I'd say find a second option.

I probably wouldn't have caught that until you mentioned it but I don't think ya'll should name him that since you guys are second guessing it because of that.

On a side note, my name is Araybia and people used to sing Arabian Nights to me all the time in elementary school.

Kids won't remember Bin Laden by the time he's interacting with them.

How many times will "Ben Lada" even be said? If he's being called by his first and last, more than likely his full first name will be used. Role call and the like. The point of nicknames is inherently informal, while, socially, being called by your first and last is usually more serious and formal.

I dunno.

Anyway, I wouldn't sweat it.
