Death Note - Official Trailer

Light trying to protect anybody in a fight pre-Death Note lol

They're still calling him Kira? Why?

I dunno. Considering KIRA is just "Killer" written in Katakana, it doesnt make much sense to still call him that unless Light is obsessed with Japanese stuff in this movie.

Just so people understand that the American setting alters the original story and characters in this adaptation.
Adam Wingard, the director, explained just what retelling Death Note in the United States means for the story and its characters.

”In the early stages of the film I was rereading all of the manga, really just looking at how does any of this translate to the United States. Ultimately, Death Note is such a Japanese thing. You can't just say let's port this over and it's going to all add up. They're two different worlds completely.

”Ultimately, whenever I say it's about America, I'm looking at it like, what are the main kind of core issues going on in America," Wingard said. ”What are the things that people chalk up to conspiracy theories? What kind of weird underground programs does the government have? How do I those work into the world of Death Note?"

The original manga and anime star Light Yagami, a student in Tokyo who finds the otherworldly Death Note and uses it to eliminate criminals. Him and the prodigy detective, L, enter a battle of wits as Light hides his acts behind the codename Kira. Wingard's Death Note stars Light Turner, who also comes across the Death Note and L, but in Seattle, Washington. These major changes from the source material have caused some controversy among fans, but Wingard explained that the direct adaption of the story in an American setting didn't work well.

”It's one of those things where the harder I tried to stay 100 percent true to the source material, the more it just kind of fell apart... You're in a different country, you're in a different kind of environment, and you're trying to also summarize a sprawling series into a two-hour-long film. For me, it became about what do these themes mean to modern day America, and how does that affect how we tell the story. Ultimately, the cat and mouse chase between Light and L, the themes of good, evil, and what's in between the gray area. Those are the core things of Death Note, and that's really what we went for."

With the location change, Wingard also said that the characters' personalities also received major changes – Light Turner and Light Yagami may share the same first name, but they're very different people.

”At its core, it's taking the themes of who the characters are but it's exploring them in a new context. Ultimately the personalities of the characters a quite a bit different... L isn't the same. There are a lot of similarities — he likes candy, sometimes he romps around with his shoes off. Those kinds of things, but at the end of the day the take on L and the escalation of his character is very different," Wingard said. ”He's still a weirdo. It's the same for almost all the characters across the board. Probably the only character that comes off as the same way as he does in the anime is Ryuk."

Wingard is also using the change in location to alter the history of some of the characters, most notably L's.

"One of the most exciting things for me is to take L's backstory and flesh that out in the context of underground, clandestine American operations, programs, and things of that nature," Wingard said. "In a way, it's sort of like taking the world that The Guest – my other film which kind of goes into super soldier creation programs and things like that – it's kind of taking those type of concepts and expanding it and saying what does that mean in the context of this film."

You know what would be a funny way to explain this?

That he was trying to order a Japanese victim to write Killer, but that victim made a spelling mistake, and thus he was known as Kira instead of Killer lol

Really into this trailer, more so than the teaser. Defoe seems to have Ryuk on lock, which is awesome.

Wondering if they disguise L's voice at the beginning like the show. Didn't get a hint of that.

Here's the featurette explaining the tone and direction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMs3CPB6ukg

Didn't know Masi Oka was a producer on this. Looks interesting, will definitely watch it, I like the cast. One major difference from the original I notice was making Light kinda sympathetic and L doing a press conference, he usually doesn't show himself in public, though like the kept the awkward sitting. Overall it looks better than I expected, I have some hope for it.

I disagree, he seems pretty well cast. He looks like Light to me

did we watch the same anime?

Ugh I dunno man. We'll see.

For the record though he doesn't seem anything like light. No tennis duels, or superhuman features. L seems like L.

The person would spell it the same exact way as Light would spell it in the Death Note unless Light specifically described him spelling it differently.

So writing "____Takes a fork and carves Killer in the wall" would not produce the spelling of KIRA.

He'd have to actually say ____ Takes a fork and carves Killer, spelt "KIRA" in the wall"

Crossing Eden

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Jesus christ Willem Dafoe is SOOOOO goddamn perfect. Like holy shit. He's so perfect as Ryuk.

Not so sure about L he doesn't sound or look mysterious at all? I don't know where they're taking this character but L sounds like a regular guy who's just afraid of showing his face.

Hype

Here's why

Every Death Note media so far either is garbage or has a trash ending? A mediocire start to finish would be a step up.

It's bizarre. Everyone seems faithful to their original characters, but Light. The fact he seems fairly open about having the death note, the fact he actually gives a shit about anyone, but himself...why change those aspects? Being a sociopath and overly secretive were huge elements of his character

But Dafoe Ryuk is as good as I knew he'd be. That's the one casting that I don't think anyone will disagree with

Light was only a good character when he was on top of everything. The problem the anime had was that the moment the lenses looked at him, the sholw show made hilarious concessions to allow him to get out of it. It would be better if there's a more complicated reason why he isn't straight up caught or does something dumb af to end up getting caught.

This looks pretty good, as far as adaptations go. The only thing that kind of irks me in L. He should be much more enigmatic and mysterious. He also seems like he's too composed and not strange enough. I'll be watching this when it drops, though.

Where are you getting this?
Are you talking about the moment where he is holding on to the girl? You do know that they could have him drop her to save himself or the book right. And give the moment an even bigger meaning.

Don't think they're gonna be able to resist the urge to make Light into an edgelord.

He should be as edgy as Leafy

I'm getting those vibes.

Let's be real, you'd have to be that sort of person to think the Death Note and making some cult is a great solution to the world.
