Been playing this game for about a month now, and I'm about 40 hours in. Don't judge me, I play like one hour a night before bed. I bought this shit without knowing anything about it. I didn't really like it at first because of the calendar system and how rigid the game structure is but now I love it. See, the thing is... I really need to do something to relax before going to bed, and this game is like the most relaxing game ever. Just shop and eat food. Catch some pokemons in a dungeon and fuse them together. The music will lull me off to sleep in no time.

I've played a lot of SMT games so I started this one on hard. It's not super difficult but I've had to devote a few days to the first palace when I'd really rather spend just one. SP is my biggest issue. I've stocked up on all the 5 SP regen sodas and apparently I can now make some coffee, but am I missing something obvious? I feel like I'm playing as smartly as I usually do but I've still heard of some people one-shotting that palace. In hindsight I probably should have waited to dungeon-dive until the last minute so I can boost my s links and stock up on the sodas.

On the Hawaii trip it definitely felt like a romance choice when I had to decide who to hang out with. My options were Hifumi(sp?) Makato, or just hang with Ryuji. Makato is the one I'm interested in, so I chose her, but is that a big choice, or it doesn't really matter? I thought it was weird that Ann wasn't an option.

Who is available depends on how far you are with their respective social links. It's not a big choice, you get some points towards the next rank up for whoever you pick, and they each give you a unique accessory which can only be equipped by Joker.

Once you level up the Death confidant to level 5 (iirc), SP regen accessories open up in her shop. Even the cheapest one will make it possible to beat palaces without going back.

Just die Akechi, christ. His death scene fell kind of flat for me. At least I got to be a cute mouse thief for a while.

Is there a specific reason why this game gets a MASSIVE free pass from critics?

Now people will come and say that the fact that this game is perhaps not my cup of tea, that doesnt necessarily mean that the game should be judged similarly from others.

And yet that is not true.

First and foremost the core of this game is good, and I like it. I like the art style, the combat seems fun, some characters are cool and some palace ideas are nice and clever and the main story still has me intersted in seeing what will happen.

But the problem is, that there is so so much repetition, so much unnecessary dialogue, so much handholding, and such bad pacing, that it is ridiculous that this game got a 93 in metacritic....

I am in summer break at the moment in game, and I swear the last 10 hours or so have been absolute horrible to play, to the point I am discouraged of even continuing this game altogether. 60 hours in and that gestapo cat still wont shut the fuck up, the game will recap everything over and over and it seems like it thinks I am a complete moron and has to explain even the simplest of things over and over and over again.

Such a chore really... and the stories involved so far? I mean they address various issues but the do so only slightly to the point of borderline teaching of common logic instead of dwelving deeper. Like: "you shouldnt be a bully. Bullying is bad!", "you should consider the environment, environment protection is good!", "you shouldnt abuse your power! Its bad!", "dont be an asshole, being an asshole is bad!"

Is this really it???Are these the amazing stories I am supposed to remember and cherish according to reviewers? Because frankly there isnt much left other than the main storyline.

Side activities are laughable. The gameplay revolves of constant teleporting from location to location to endure the same dialogue over and over again. I dont even visit the god damn airsoft shop anymore, because I cant stand watching that dialogue about not having enough guts to speak to the owner about something...

This game looks like it was made towards 12 year old kids. And I am astounded that it has been given a free pass from critics to a gazillion things it does bad. And its hypocritical, because same critics complain about other games' pacing, side content, radio towers, but hey, Persona 5 is fine, its fine reading the same shit 1000 times.

I just dont get it.

Don't worry, you are not the only one. Reviewers must have gotten blinded by the artstyle or something because the game has a lot of flaws, the constant repetition being one of the most obvious one. The pacing and those bloody loooong sessions when instead of playing the game forced you to being a passive observer made me almost quit it as well. I would love to replay it someday, but remembering this and the stupid cat I most likely won't.

The game is great and really fun (when it actually let's you play it), but when it comes to the reviews - way way overrated.

Hey, how much longer do I have?

I just got to the Palace of

I've already pumped 90hrs into this game (most of that time is idle/AFK) and I kind of just want it to be over with.

You've got ages to go - maybe 60% of the way through the game. You're probably looking at around 30 hours game time.

Holy cow... Alright. I had a lot of fun in the beginning but this is too repetitive, and the fact that most of the game is exposition through cutscenes, it's easy for me to tune out. I still enjoy it sometimes, but only in very certain situations.

You're also about to start what most people consider to be the worst dungeon in the game - so this could be break point if you're not really feeling it.

If it's any consolation, the story really picks up after this deadline.

The stretch from after finishing up Palace 4 till the aftermath of Palace 5 is pretty awful. But, if you can make it through this portion of the game, you'll be rewarded for it. I don't want to spoil it even a little bit, so I'll stop here.

The end of this game is turning into a slog for me.
Shido's Palace
was just ridiculous and not fun at all. Then after that the plot twist
of people not caring about the Phantom Thieves
came out of nowhere and feels so pointless. Now I'm back in
Mementos
and I'm just ready for it to be over to be honest.

You guys had me all worried about palace 5...

Awesome music
Cool design
I liked the traversal mechanic at the end
Interesting new Persona's

I did feel stretched thin a few times. But it would have been super easy if I let myself do it in three trips instead of two. I even lost 30 or so minutes of progress at one point. And still thought it was a good palace.

Just secured my route to the treasure. If that was the low point of the game then this will end up being my favorite game of all time. Lol

So my social link run what's the best suggestion for Mishimas requests? Do them asap or try to wait till I can do several requests?

Just go in mementos once per dungeon, except for the very first (
Kamoshida's
) since you'll have no requests by then. I did it on my first playthrough, got max social links with all confidants and cleared all mementos missions with time to spare.
Also try to get to start Fortune as soon as possible, she'll unlock somewhere in june/july and needs a mementos mission to start, so keep that in mind.
All other confidants who have a mementos mission will get stuck around rank 7-8, so try to level them up all together so that you can get more missions to clear all at once somewhere in sept/oct when their level will reach lvl 7.

How far into each dungeon should I plunder mementos. I just started the second, haven't don't mishimas first request yet but know another request will be open as soon as I get to the end of the arc

It doesn't matter how far in the dungeons you are, it depends if you're somewhere near unlocking another request for mementos, in that case, wait for it. Otherwise, go clear all the missions you have, and reach the stopping point for a "good" mementos run.
The only exception, as I said, is fortune. Her rank 7 power is too invaluable for a full confidant rank, so I'd do her confidant starting mission ASAP.

In terms of music, I don't want to set your expectations at all, but the next Palace has one of the best, and one of my personal favorite, tracks of the game.

My opinion of course, but I fell in love with Palace 6's theme.

Anyone here follow the podcasts S.Link FM and Shin Megami Tensei Network? Seems like both of them stopped putting out episodes right before P5 launched lol. Which is weird since both podcasts spent so much time talking about the game for so long before it came out and now that it's been out for months I figured they would have at least put out an episode or 2 talking about it.

I know SMT Network has put out an episode recently, haven't listened yet, but from the description it doesn't seem like they discus P5 at all. This is the first episode released after a long break too.

Are there any other good SMT focuses podcasts that are current? Not just Persona focused?

Lol yeah I was going to say WTF at S.Link FM. They switch to some general games podcast (which I don't need another of) and then don't even put out a P5 episode.

That's what got me wondering what happened myself. I mean that Nier episode was awesome but I've been waiting for some kind of Persona episode since P5 released lol. I don't mind a bonus episode when something like Nier comes around but after waiting this long you would think they would have had a few P5 centered episodes.

I think something happened and they are just on a break or done with the podcasts which is a shame because they were my go to SMT podcast for awhile there. Hope everything Is alright.

Can't decide if I'm interested in buying the English version of this after having played import. Loved the style / vibes of being in Tokyo, but the gameplay really does get repetitive...

at the entrance of mementos. If you try to enter the first floor you get the option to customize

Thanks. Easy to miss since normally you'll fast-travel to the lowest floor.

Gonna dive into Palace 5 any day now, should be interesting after all the horror stories I've heard.

I wonder if I will max all confidants. I feel like I should, since several people are saying it's pretty doable and I'm using my time as effectively as possible thanks to having a ton of experience from previous games.

Managing my time wisely to level up confidants and social stats as effectively as possible has always felt very addicting to me.

So I just beat the game, here are my thoughts. Starting with the negative
-Yes, I've been complaining about it the entire time but the dungeon lengths are to long for a turn based battle system. For the next Persona game, I hope they either shorten the dungeons or change the battle system.
-Haru.
Uh does anyone else feel like she was a last minute addition to the party? I feel as if you could cut her out and her father's dungeon and nothing would be lost. Even her social link 'story' is pretty bad with how the things are resolved.
-Traitor.
They handled this "twist" really badly, it was pretty obvious who the traitor was and he's even missing in the steel book lol, did they even double check the art? Oh and it was really dumb how they seemed to quickly forgive him in the end, did they just forget this guy murdered multiple people?! <_<

For the positives,
-Dungeon designs. Disregarding the dungeon length, each dungeon felt unique unlike the previous game. It was also nice to see they added some simple puzzles to differentiate each dungeon beside visually.
-Battle System. Not really fan of turn based battle systems on home consoles, but I like they improved from the previous game being able to swap party members. I had hoped they at least changed it so that if the MC died the game doesn't end, but eh minor improvement is better than nothing.

All in all, I enjoyed my time with the game. Do I think it's better than P4G? No, I feel as the main party cast is weaker than P4G's cast where the entire party felt like a close knit group of friends. Felt like Makoto and Haru felt out of place and didn't really feel like 'friends', especially the latter. Even though P5 improved the dungeons, I would rather run through P4G's dungeon over P5 spending more than four hours per dungeon isn't fun. It is better than P3P though. P4G > P5 > P3P. Is it the best JRPG on the PS4? Nah.
It is my GOTY so far though. Oh and besides Ann and Haru's social links, I enjoyed the rest of them. Yusuke being the most likable member of the group. :I

I like seeing who people liked most in the group. It often differs from person to person. I liked Ryuji the most. IMO the best "your first friend" character in P3-5 to me. I'm not done P4 yet, but so far I like P5's cast the most out of P3-5.

As for your other thoughts (endgame spoilers for everything):

Haru:
I like Haru (my MC dated her), but I agree that she is the weakest character in the team in terms of development. She shows up too late, by that time you're short on time so you don't feel like you have time to screw with her gardening perks, and the game MASSIVELY mishandled her reaction to her dad's death. She took it so well and the game glossed over it so hard that I kept suspecting something about her, when there was nothing actually there. I kept wondering if she would secretly stab me for it or something, all the way until the end of the story. She was my second choice for traitor if it didn't turn out to be Akechi. I don't think there's anything wrong with her personality, but the game could have definitely inserted/developed her more smoothly.

Traitor:
The twist works a lot better if you consider the big reveal the fact that the team was actually one step ahead of Akechi, rather than the fact that Akechi is the traitor. It's obvious that Akechi is the traitor, but it wasn't obvious that the team had planned around it.

The funny thing is that I was seriously sleep deprived during the pancake scene, and completely missed that hint. I only suspected Akechi through the general creepy vibe I got from him during the casino palace.

Makoto:
I think she was great throughout the game, actually. One of the best characters IMO. She was the big sister of the group, so it made sense that she didn't participate in the sort of banter that you'd see between, say, Ann and Ryuji. She was still friends with everyone, but not in quite the same way because she's supposed to be the mature one. So instead of participating in the horsing around, she usually played the voice of reason instead.

Having said that, I think she kind of stole the show a little too hard, because many of the plot driving actions after she showed up revolved around her. She stole her sister's laptop data, the casino palace was extremely personal to her, and so on. Makoto was one of the only team members who stated relevant and continued to contribute to the direction of the team after her palace. Most other characters like Ryuji, Ann, and Yusuke didn't do much besides provide commentary to what was going on after their respective palaces, and I think that's a waste.

Dungeons: Yeah, I think they could be shorter. I get that they're not supposed to be done in one sitting, but when there's such a good incentive to do so and when it
becomes so easy once you get the right equipment, then every dungeon becomes this massive 5-7 hour slog that's not all that fun after a while. I liked the dungeons that had more enforced break points that made you split up the action a little without making you feel like you wasted time.

Dungeons were the best part for me, minus the really annoying death penalty during them.

The slog of the game for me was just navigating day to day life in the latter half of the game. Just felt like a chore to rush through to get to the next dungeon.

I'm taking a break after the 4th palace. I'm really enjoying the game but the pacing is way off in the game. I was starting to feel burnt out so I think I'll come back to it after I finish a couple of shorter games from the steam sales.

Post palace 4:
I'm conflicted on Futaba too. I think she has better motivation to actually join the Phantom Thieves than anyone else in the group, but I was shocked by how immature they made her be. I think they overdid it in a massive way that in the week after the palace she quickly lost all her appeal to me. She reminds me of a kids mentality so much that it feels weird to consider her as a romantic option for confidants.

There's no time skip if you beat it ahead of the deadline - it's lets you play through December as normal.

Can I still do confidant stuff after clearing the final palace? Or should I wait until the last possible day before beating it?

Post below yours explains, but here's a pro-tip that really saved my ass in completing all confidants -
I don't remember which day exactly, but it might be the very final day or the one before where you can meet with any person regardless of whether or not that is their usual day. Can Google it to make sure.

I guess if you look it at that way it does make it more 'shocking,' but then again it also shows how risky that plan was and how conveniently it all fell in place together. The plan was kinda bs, if the detective decided to never show the phone to him then everything goes down the drain. They robbed Akechi out of his victory

So I've heard overwhelmingly positive things about this game so thought I'd check out some snippets of Let's Plays on YouTube to see if it's for me or not. According to most reviews it's basically the second coming of Christ.

Shit, there is a lot of dialogue in this game, just reams and reams of the stuff! Like, I kept skipping through to try and find some gameplay but it was always yet more conversation. Conversation after conversation...

I'd ended up skipping through about the first 7-8 hours and was STILL seeing tutorial prompts too! Is this game for real?

Yeah, no thanks. I tried P3P years back on the PSP and heard that they'd cut out a lot of he busywork from the original but I still felt like a was playing the most boring drawn out intro after 5-6 hours. Is it an intentionally banal high-school sim? A tedious copy-paste dungeon crawler? One of those weird Japanese dating sims? Just a 60 hour tutorial?

These games seem like anti-fun to me, I can't abide relentless dialogue in games. I'm genuinely surprised they've gotten such positive reviews, the art style is nice I guess but man they're so dull.
