Elite Dangerous: Horizons |OT| Just scratching the surface

bad gameplay lol
The communities are the only thing that keep my playing at the moment. There's a small bubble of RP forming, and the Colonia group keep Colonia interesting with their events and stories too.

One day I'm going to make the trek out to Colonia and see what it's all about.

No time soon, of course, but eventually.

How much does it cost to taxi a ship out to Colonia once you're there? I don't really want to make that trip in anything but an Anaconda or my AspX, haha.

So wait, you started this super long 60 jump route without knowing if you'd actually be able to get there or not? For that long of a route (or hell, even HALF that long) you need a plan.

I don't know man...being completely serious here, just based on your posts today, I'm not sure this is the game for you. I mean if you're enjoying it, fine, it's not my place to tell you how to enjoy something, but...I feel like you're not going to get very far playing the way you are.

I am learning from the experience, as I go, this game has been out out on PC for years. I've been playing for 2 days. I don't expect to do it all at once but without posting here I would not have known about the docking computer or fuel scoops.

My issue is people saying how you play is not fun, here I am out of fuel. 2 ways to get out of this do use the community and use Fuel Rats, this is an awesome feature for a community.

My second option self-destruct pay my re-buy cost lost 30 jumps but I would be at a station where I can purchase fuel scoops I started these jumps just to see how far this ship could go, now I know to plan ahead better.

Fuel Rats, is amazing though anything else like this in gaming? That is awesome.

wow, 60M credits an hour, looks like I'm in the wrong system

NeoGAF is known to have devs lurking that is mostly why I did not want to post the system but youtube has a lot of videos on it so I am sure they know they need to patch Quince long ago

I recorded the advanced combat tutorial if anybody still wants to give it a shot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy8kwlCswdE

I failed hard against the lone ship and started 1 vs 2 with 53% hull but still managed to do it. Tips? Put your pips into WEP and SYS, focus on 1 enemy, use chaff, stay in the 'blue zone' speed-wise while doing various sharp maneuvers etc. and conserve your rockets, be sure to have at least 7 when fighting 2 ships.

If you've only been playing for two days you probably shouldn't be heading to Quince. You're not going to get anything even remotely close to 60m/hr without having your reputation at a decently high level, which I can almost guarantee you don't at this stage of the game.

I'm trying to help you here, and you're acting like a troll. You come in and say "Well docking sucks and I shouldn't have to do it" and it's a basic bread and butter part of the game. That would be like playing Super Mario Bros and said you hated jumping, so you'll just walk off into the pits or if you were playing newer games, just use that Super Guide block every time because it does it for you.

I was trying to make you feel welcome, and you have done everything to rebuke that because you refuse to play the game correctly and then complain about why it's not that way. This is just docking your ship, it's not like this is Engineers or some ridiculous shit like that.

Get a grip buddy, because you won't get far in this game or community with that attitude.

Sorry, but this comes off as ridiculous to me. Whilst I agree that docking is certainly not "a terrible mechanic", if someone comes in complaining that they think docking sucks and they shouldn't have to do it... the truth is they don't have to do it. The docking computer exists specifically so they don't have to. It's definitely not the optimal way to play the game, and they probably should learn to do it at some point... but you know what? Who cares if they don't want to deal with today, tomorrow or even next month?... The game is entirely playable skipping over this aspect.

It's helpful to suggest things to people that may benefit their experience.. but it's not help to repeatedly insist, and then antagonise the person simply because they opt against your suggestions. I see this happen a lot of the times with sim racers, where people take issue with a person's choice to use the racing line. You see comments of "it creates a dependency on it" or "it doesn't show the fastest line" etc, like that really matter to someone that simply won't enjoy the game enough to continue playing otherwise. It's better that someone continues to enjoy playing badly, than to not enjoy forcing themselves to play "the correct way". Sure, every so often, not knowing how to dock without the docking computer may mean you're completely screwed... big deal. It's a rare occurrence, and the first time it'll happen is probably a lot longer than they may even play the game otherwise. It's only worth learning to play a game properly if you're already enjoying it.

If someone doesn't want to heed your advice, then just stop giving it. It's their problem if that impedes their progress (if they even care that it does).

Everyone so grumpy today. Lighten up. It's a game. Enjoy it however you want, but if you get a reputation for flaunting people's advice don't be surprised if people don't help you out in the future.

Now everyone sit down, have a nice cup of tea and have fun!

The only thing impeding their progress is their resistance to learning anything. This is an absolutely toxic mindset to get into a new game with.

I have never said "Don't ever use the docking computer." I don't have a problem with him using the docking computer, however it's important that he needs to know how to dock. This isn't about "the correct way" or whatever, when it factually is correct that you have to dock one way or another. If your docking computer gets shot, like you said, he has to know how to do it. If his canopy is breached and he has seconds of oxygen left, he certainly doesn't want to wait for his docking computer to get him in and waste time. If it's "not a big deal" to him, I hope whenever he gets an Anaconda eventually, he's so overflowing with cash that the ~15-20 mil insurance hit every time he dies because of something like that, or the docking computer fucking up and crashing straight into the station, is pocket change to him, but I seriously doubt that.

He wants to play the game in silly and impractical way thinking he doesn't need to learn a skill that's Elite 101. This isn't "Oh you're not playing my way", it is effectively like breathing! "Oh, I don't need to breathe like you do. Stop criticizing me for not breathing your way!"

This isn't a difficult concept, just people like him are turning it into one.

I am going to have to grind my rep anyway so at least I want to grind at a place where I set a greedy goal, seeing the large number missions I am missing out on will motivate me to keep grinding my rep

damn my current station only has an E ranked fuel scoop

I think I need some heat shielding or something those stars will fry me before I get any fuel with that rating

The thing is though, is they didn't even just ignore advice. They took one suggestion over the other.

Smiles: "Man, docking sucks... it'd be better if I didn't have to"
Group A: "You don't have to. Get a docking computer"
Group B: "No... learn how to do it probably"

I agree with this post. that is all that happened from my point of view.

I am enjoying this game because I was given an option to avoid what I sucked at, and I am trying to find other ways to extend the time I spend with it. I was just about to give it up and see what No Man's Sky is up to until that docking computer. Now I am kinda addicted to finding out what else I am missing.

Fuel Scoop check!

He's fine without learning it for now. At some point (likely in the distant future, when he's more comfortable flying the ship anyway) it'll likely get him killed. If he's still enjoying the game at that point, losing an Anaconda because he can't dock may well be motivation to then learn. Maybe it still won't. Doesn't really matter. If they have an Anaconda to lose, then apparently they're progressing regardless.

It's not at all like breathing because there's little repercussion to not learning for yourself. You can't get anywhere not learning to breathe. If there was no docking computer, then yes... the only correct answer would be to suck it up and learn, because otherwise you're not getting anywhere. That isn't the case though.

Then I will be cackling like a maniac when he keeps losing ship after ship when he has mishaps like his docking computer screwing up, running out of oxygen, or his docking computer disabled and never has money to get anywhere. That or he somehow gets an Anaconda (unlikely playing the way he wants to) and then losing it.

All I was doing was trying to help, he has caused 100% of the issue here.

Sure, if all that happens (and is actually repeatedly the result of using a docking computer) feel free to say "see, I told you so". Chances are you just won't even know that it happened though, because nothing they do in game actually affects you, so them playing inefficiently but having fun is preferable to them quitting because they still suck at docking 3 hours later.

You really need to learn how to dock a ship if for no other reason than you will probably suck at flying in any other situation if you can't control your ship at moderate to low speeds. I imagine it's more difficult with a controller, but It's not any different than parking in a parking space. You just slow down, fly over it until the dot is in the target, and then gently lower yourself down with thrusters.

Edit: I should point out that the "you" in this post is just a general second person "you." Not singling anyone out.

If he actually listened to suggestions on it, he could have understood docking in under an hour. But whatever, he wants to just plug his ears and not listen to do this his inefficient way, fine. I think most people won't take kindly to that and get more frustrated if he ever asks for advice though.

before I leave this station is there some kind of heat resistance I can put on a ship that works for when I get close to a star?

I just self-destructed my ship because I ran out of fuel. To me this is not a big deal, I am not role-playing a sim.

I could go back to crashing each time I try to dock, losing the ship was not a big deal but getting the damn fines and 6 day bounty is not enjoyable especially if the bounty is in a system I wanted to do my trading routes in.

He is right if I am still playing this in a few months there is no reason why I would not have gotten better at the controls enough to learn to dock properly.

2 days in, I just want to discover and enjoy the game at my own pace.

this is the main reason I play MMOs solo if given the option so I can screw around without messing things up for others. I am not screwing anyone else's enjoyment by crashing in a solo server.

That should be fine for smaller ships really. If you want to fuel up to full then you should slowly advance towards the star's horizon till you see your heat balance out. Don't be afraid to pull up and back off though since damage to your ship on a long trip is worse than losing a few minutes to fuel up. Aiming at the stars horizon instead of dead center means you can quickly leave if things get a little too hot.

You can extend your travel range a little without sacrificing time by doing 'hot passes' on scoopable stars before lining up on your next jump. Just do a fast dip into the scoop range and back out, assuming you don't get too close and are dropped out of supercruise.

No, your heat will go up regardless. Just take it slow and don't be afraid to back off to cool down if you end up getting too close. Plan to find a scoopable star (O, B, A, F, G, K, M types) before your last jump too, haha.

So I had no idea how complete and fully realized the ship models are. Apparently in VR you can walk around the ship interiors? I know many long time players here are a bit skeptical of Frontier, but it makes me hopeful that the promise of walking around ships and space stations and even planets may actually become reality one day.

I'll be picking up the PS4 version next week and already know I'll love ED, but the level of immersion in being able to get out of your ship and look at it would take this game to a whole new level.

I agree that in the grand scheme of things, you do need to learn to dock. But you can learn it later, when your enjoyment of the game itself actually motivates you to do so. It's not as though this game has a level 1-1 that skipping the manual docking class will stop you progressing past. You can have plenty of fun in Elite Dangerous being utterly useless at flying. In the majority of situations, there's nothing to crash into for literal light years... docking is the anomaly of something that otherwise requires fine control, that can't just be avoided until later. But luckily there's a docking computer that let's you postpone that too, if you'd just like to get straight out there.

Oh man, walking in your ship would be freaking amazing and would add so much to the game, specially when you play co-op.

I hope they do that one day.

So uh, is there anything besides the ingame tutorials i should be checking at for help? Figured i'd jump into this tonight.

There are some great beginner videos on YouTube if you're interested. I know people really like ObsidianAnt videos and he probably has a few new videos aimed at PS4 players.

The most important thing is learning the flight model (lateral and vertical thrusters alongside normal pitch and yaw), learning when to drop out of supercruise (when you get to 0:07 seconds away from your destination), and how to access eddb.io.

Is the fuel scoop auto-matic or do I have to deploy it? Have not left the station yet just trying to research before I attempt the jumps again.

Since I am going to fly near each star any way this fuel scoop makes so much sense, great feature.

fuel scoop is automatic when you are near a star, just don't get too close but not all stars are scoopable, mostly yellows are

To safely drop out of supercruise you must be less than 1000 km dustsnce AND less than 1000 km/s speed.
The 75% throttlr at 7s rule is the easiest way to ensure the right speed and distance.

Station entrances face the planet, so approach from that direction of you want to avoid having to circle the station.

I've no idea why people are worried about station rotation matching. Station rotation is very slow. Just fly towards the middle of the docking hole and rotate to fit through as needed. You can fit through sideways in small ships, and grazing the side of the dock won't kill you or get you a fine (fines are if you hit another ship while going above 100 m/s).

Just remember, docking a spaceship is like making love to a beautiful woman. Don't go too fast and don't ignore any instructions on where to put it. Also, use a shield unless you're sure it's safe. /Swiss Toni

Fuel scoop deploys automatically as you fly around the star's corona. DO NOT fly into the area underneath the green arc.

The only problem is that beginner fuel scoops take FOREVER.

almost brought one of those :( did not know if it was weapon

almost ran into a freakin comet!

It's not a weapon, they go on your utility mounts, separate from your hardpoints. That's where things like heat sink launchers, chaff, kill warrant scanners, and shield boosters go. If you plan on getting in situations like that, having a pack or two of heat sink launchers isn't bad. All Heat Sink Launchers are created equal, since Utility mounts are all the same class.

If you're using Shield Cell banks (you probably wouldn't bother outside of combat), it's a good rule of thumb that for every SCB you have, have a set of heat sinks to go with it.

I use the docking comp all the time, thing does a great job. and I grab drinks while its docking lol. the docking computer has never once killed me in hundreds of hours, probably about 1/3 with the computer. for extra insurance just jam pips into systems. I don't think you really need that much practice with docking now because landing on planets is pretty much the same deal now with horizons. Although getting that Anaconda through the mail slot can be a bit tricky.

I would actually like to see a timed run from people racing the docking computer because it actually does a great job.

I do remember my first time flying my Anaconda through the mail slot. You have to have your head uncomfortably close to the top of it to get through, that's the confusing thing about it. Once you understand that, you're good.

I remember I also had problems with the Clipper when I first got mine...one of the wings would get caught on the side. I got better after the first or second try though.

Moose Biscuits

It would be extreamly painful...
When I was flying my Sidey I got into the habit of circling whatever star I was scooping from at high speed; I could look up through the canopy and keep it in roughly the same position and adjust for temperature. Much more fun than sitting still and scooping I tell you hwat.

Of course, then when I switched to my Adder I couldn't do that any more since it has fuck-all cockpit visibility vertically.

yeah the bridge on the Anaconda is way high up I guess huh? when you look at the picture of it or the actual ship model the cockpit is pretty high up so you have to squeeze your cockpit right up there. ... I wish I had a pic of one right now I'm going off of memory

I don't think you really need that much practice with docking now because landing on planets is pretty much the same deal now with horizons. Although getting that Anaconda through the mail slot can be a bit tricky.

I would actually like to see a timed run from people racing the docking computer because it actually does a great job.

Don't use it on the Orca, it will malfunction and kill you with irritating regularity.

It will work flawlessly on every ship, apart form the Anaconda, which depending on your approach vector will miss the slot and have to shunt itself once, perhaps twice, before getting through the slot.
