Prey patch adds major stuttering to PS4 version, "worst ever" frame pacing

Didn't something similar happen to Rise of Tomb Raider when the devs tried to fix the input latency?

Man, holy shit, what a nightmare. And to think I almost bought a copy yesterday... Glad I went for The Surge instead.

I really, really want to support Arkane because I love their output (plus Prey looks fantastic), but not like this... Here's hoping they can somewhat fix this before the game is $10 lol.

I wouldn't bet on them being able to fix the problem completely. It's a serious and complicated issue and it's not like Prey is a game as a service that's going to be updated and supported for months. One of the solutions would be to add the option to "turn on" the input lag for better performance, but that would be admitting defeat and wouldn't stop people from complaining about 'lazy devs'. ;)

This might even be an issue inherent in CryEngine and not really possible for them to fully address.

With Rise of the Tomb Raider, it was at least an original engine designed for the game and both Nixxes and CD could make necessary adjustments as they please, I would assume.

But it's not present on XB1. Vsync is enabled on that without a latency penalty, so the only difference would be resolution, right? Keep in mind I have no idea what I'm talking about, lol.

I love Digital Foundry, without them devs would get away with so much bullshit without anyone making a peep about it. Nothing ruins games more for me than performance issues and they're so often ignored in reviews. Frame pacing errors feel exactly like constant frame rate drops so it's just as bad.
I watched the video last night and I was thinking how appreciative I am for them bringing these issues to light. Similar to ROTTR and Diablo 3, their exposure of the issue led to Nixxes and Blizzard to make adjustments. Unfortunately, I think Bethesda/Arkane are the type to say it's good enough, deal with it.

So if this is an issue with the engine as it seems to be. Would the best bet be to enable the lag, for a smoother experience? Or do you think they will be able to create a middle ground?

There seems to be an issue with this engine and the Ps4. No idea why, but I think other games that have used this engine have input lag on ps4.

I've written Bethesda, Arkane and the Prey Twitter. Not a single reply regarding fixing the PS4 issues. Radio silence on reddit too from Jess at Bethesda, who was previously answering us at times. It's crazy how they can just blow you off after breaking the game.

Playing the game right now and think it's just fine. ᷅_(ヅ)_/ ᷄

That's cool. Let me know if you still think it's cool when saves get corrupted, or an NPC just doesn't spawn in your game, making it impossible to enter certain doors, thus ruining your chance at a platinum. Glad the frame pacing and reduced FOV don't bother you though.

So is this one of those rare multiplatform games that's better on the Xbone that the PS4? Like how every now and then last-gen some random game would be better on the PS3 than the 360?

Pretty much, seems like this engine and ps4 don't mesh very well. It's okay if you aren't super sensitive. Was able to finish it fine with only 2 noticeable framerate dips. That said, if you have an Xbox get it on there. Or PC if you have one that can play it.

Uuuuugghhhh

Yeah, i thought i wouldn't care or it wasnt that big of a deal. Played it and holy shit, its VERY noticable :(

Still not fixed and both Arkane and Bethesda refuse to answer anyone. This type of shit is inexcusable.
Well dam, glad I didn't pick it up when it was on sale a week or two ago. It's been a month, I would have expected atleast a word on the situation cause I really want to play this.

This is such a shame. The PC version is fantastic and runs well across a good spread of hardware.

Very dissapointed if more people don't get to experience this game due to these issues :( .

And here I was holding off because I was waiting for HUD options to be patched in :/

I'm still really excited to play this game but PS4 is my only option and every time I check in on its status, it seems to either A) still be fucked up B) get worse. What's going on with this game?

Now that I think about it, how does this all actually happen? I don't know anything about the ins and outs so my question is: doesn't someone test these patches out and go "wait a minute guys, the game runs shitty now..."? Is it a matter of "well it's too late now, gotta get something out"?

And this is why I won't support Arkane anymore. They refused to patch in supersampling for Dishonored 2 and messed up Prey with the Pro patch.

Arkane are incompetent on console optimisation.

So they don't have any QA? Always wondering how something like this can happen. You wouldn't release a patch like this, if you see those problems internally?

Dishonored 2 post release support was very good. I am hoping Prey gets the same treatment.

Until then I am not getting my wallet out for it.

Well patches are supposed to fix various things, not just improve the overall performance. Maybe they figured most people won't notice or won't care (just like the majority of the gamers don't cause a riot when a game can't hold stable 30fps), maybe they didn't have any resources to fix everything, maybe they've broken too much and gave up. Who knows. :/

I'm not one to just say I flat out won't support a developer anymore, but between what I heard with Dishonored 2 and what I've personally seen with Prey, I'm totally inclined to take this stance at this point :(

Bethesda was answering people on Reddit, but stopped weeks ago. Now there's a lot of posts about the issues, but just as many people defending Arkane....which blows my damn mind, lol.

I remember Bloodborne every time ...

Arkane just lost one copy. I was about to grab Prey on the last sale on Ps Store (more stupid, they didn't release the game on Brazil and Bethesda don't know why) then I saw the multiple problems and left without nothing.

I just beat it earlier this week. I was wondering why it performed so poorly. (I still really enjoyed it.

They don't seem to have mentioned the atrocious load times, though. They're simply unacceptable, particularlynina. Genre that relies so heavily on quickloading and quicksaving.

I just want them to fix it so I can finish the game. It went from being a totally consistent 30fps to so stuttery that movement feels bad and gives me a headache. I loved my time (20+ hours) with it before patch 1.02 and I want to see it through, especially since I'm a big fan of Arkane.

Before patch 1.04 the game was updated weekly. Nothing since then.

I sold my PS4 copy without finishing it. I completely regret buying this game on that platform. I'll just wait until the game drops to $20 on PC and buy it then.

I'm not one to usually boycott a dev either but between the lack of supersampling for D2, stuttery mess of Prey and poor definitive edition of the first Dishonored game on PS4, I'll give this studio a pass next time.

Complaining with our wallet is all we can do really. Such a shame as it's my GOTY on XB1.

So the Reddit thread complaining about no communication finally got a response from Bethesda.

We appreciate receiving your feedback, and the devs are aware and working on/investigating these issues. I don't have additional information at this time, but once I do on future updates and specifics, I'll post here as always.

In the meantime, you can keep sending me PMs specifically with your issue and I can forward them as I get them. Thank you

Shame about these issues as the game itself is one of my favorites of the year. It's really really good. It's just that...it's only REALLY good on PC.
Same. I played it on PC and it's easily in my top 5 so far this year. Really hope that people give this game a shot once these issues are fixed because it's a fantastic game.

I was ready to pay full price for it but with all the shitty PS4 issues that have plagued it since release, I'll probably end up only dropping half on it by the time it's actually fixed. I know there's quite a few people out there in the same boat, so that's a shame.

Too bad the only PC I have is an antiquated work computer.

Really hope they can fix this game for the playstation people. It's such a good game. Now if I can get a timetable for ng+ that would be awesome. To hold me over I'm finishing Dishonored 2, which is not as bad people said for ps4.

Has this gotten fixed yet? Thinking of picking it up today. It’s on sale for $40 at gamestop

For me, it's actually better than what it was before the update that caused the frame pacing. But it's very playable and not that big a deal for me.

It's a good game (so far), so I would just get it. Seems like they don't want to go further down than the $40 price right now.

I played the demo back then and the game was never smooth on PS4. It even had annoying screen tearing which made me skip the game altogether. Not to mention the input lag.

I love Arkane, but if this isn't fixed on PS4, I think I'm done buying their games. Completely ridiculous this is still an issue. I'd like to actually play the copy I bought.

Why dont they actually do quality controll on their patches before rolling them out to consumers?
