Preacher S2 |OT| The Gang Visits New Orleans - Mondays 9/8c

The entire episode I couldn't stop thinking about how terrible the singer's wig was. I'm glad there was a reason for it haha.

Agreed, Julie Ann Emery looks better with her natural hair.

Well caught the episode on the DVR.

I want to like it, but it just diverts too much from decent writing, they could've had the changes to Tulip and still had more of the comic storyline.

I don't know, part of me wants to love it because there are these little glimmers and moments where the show feels like the comic book, then they just do something I'd expect in any other tv series or something completely boring comparison to what happened in the comic book.

Also the fact they are truncating so many storylines is kind of fucking...not good.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
I hope this season is a lot closer to comic storyline.
Herr Star makes me excited gor this season, i hope it delivers.

Should finish off the first season myself, but quit about 4 or 5 episodes in after feeling it strayed way too far from the comic...and gave us a hell of a lot of nothing in its place. Unless things improved by the end.

This episode was... not very good. Too much annoying jazz filling up screen time.Too many "who the fuck is that guy" moments. Jesse and Tulip being annoyed with one another and not talking to each other is obnoxious. The Eugene stuff was boring and seemed rather pointless. The French dude was funny (esp. when you understand what he says) but that's about it.

Why did Preacher just have a better shot fight scene than most MCU films?

I was wondering why he even decided to fight them. Just tell them to stand still or run away.

It was a cool fight scene, didn't realise Jesse was such a tank though. Took multiple hits from batons and kept going.

I thought that was Gillian Anderson. OMG finally Starr. Pacing is good to too slow or fast. I didn't know the show was over until credits rolled. Why didn't Gunslinger showed up when Jesses used his power?

Any Gaffer part of series advisor* for this show? (Fills up Sony TV weekly TV survey).

To be honest it's pretty consistent with the book that Jesse prefers to try and punch people rather than use his power. You can probably rationalise it away that he doesn't like using The Word when he doesn't have to, unless he's really, really, reeeeally pissed off.

I read the entire preacher series when i was in high school

One of the only comic book series I've ever read. As a longtime fan, having watched the show...

I loved season 1 and Season 2 is even better. The change to Tulip was the best thing that ever happened to her character.

I liked the hell scene in this episode. And one of the few good takeaways from the first season is that, as soon as the loop started, I could tell that's what they were going for. Eugene has had a rough life.

The "I can't tell my hero friend my deep dark secret past because he won't understand" trope is kinda tired, but what the hell, I'm intrigued to see what Tulip did to get this mob boss so pissed off at her.

The lounge singer swerve was subtle. I don't remember, was the initial guy at the bar with the flag tie in the van at the end when the reveal is made? Because that would have been brilliant. Not sure what they're up to but more wrinkles is good.

Pacing is light years better than last year.

So I'm just getting around to watching the season premiere now and right off the bat the Saint of Killers shows up and proceeds to miss like a dozen shots.

The Saint of Killers. Missed.

Several shots.

I'm not familiar with the reference material, I wanted to read the graphic novels but never got around to it. But I read a review elsewhere that said Herr Starr appeared in another show, but his face was never shown.

Was that Lucifer or Constantine?

I'd assume they are referring to the one shot we got of him in Season 1.

I'll admit I haven't actually read the comics but I'm guessing they employ a similar tactic (lucky cover/quick thinking/speedy escapes) of essentially making the Saint "miss" his shots, otherwise there's no way the trio should ever encounter him and not fucking immediately die if he doesn't miss.

At least with the path they took here it fulfills the action quota for the episode and allows close calls with the character without the writers having to bend over backwards trying to figure out how to not let the group get killed. Though I guess if genesis works on the Saint in the comic that goes a long way towards helping the group with the not getting blown to shit thing.

Every shot hits, every shot kills. He is the Saint of Killers, God's hitman.

As for how they survive... well Cassidy is already dead, and Jesse has the voice of god.

The Saint is immune to Genesis...

This shit isn't hard to get right.

It's an odd choice to go in that direction. I'm assuming the show wants to maintain some tension with Saint of Killers around, so people don't ask "Why doesn't Jesse just tell him to stop?" I don't know why the writers would bother being concerned about that though, the comic is right there, it did the work for you. So they change one thing, but then have to change another (Saint of Killers missing) to make it work.

I was thinking the guy in the jazz bar was gonna god I also thought for a second it was George rr martin which would of been genius.

As a comic reader, I'm totally okay with the changes in regards to the Saint. In the comics, he never misses a shot but Jesse's VOG works on him so that immediately renders his threat to Jesse (personally) as borderline nonexistent. Here he may miss a shot but the VOG DOESN'T work on him, so that already makes him a bigger threat to the protagonists than he was in the comic. I've always been in the mindset of not changing things from their source material but honestly I don't mind it within the realm and the world the show itself has built. Similar to arseface, him trying to kill himself because of Kurt Cobain in 2016 would have been fucking stupid.

lol I thought he looked like GRRM too

Well yeah, but how hard would it be to come up with a fictional rock star inspired by Cobain to have a similar situation? What they went with, with that brain-dead (both literally and figuratively lol) bimbo, was just... wtf

Haven't read the comics, but fuck me I'm so glad they went with the Saint here over the one in the comic. Can't miss but can be stopped by Jesse any time. No thanks.

Nah man. The Saint is way more terrifying with everyone knowing he's an insane threat despite the fact that Jessie can use the word of god on him.

"Just how fast you reckon you can preach?"

This is my problem, the comics are legit a million times better than this show.

Jesse is unrecognizable.

Cassidy is pretty much perfect.

Tulip is great because she sucked in the books.

Then you go and character assassinate and combine story arcs that don't belong together.

Like, I don't know what the fuck they are doing. Honestly, I liked the changes made to TWD for the most part, but this is just... ugh.

I really hoped with that awful first season that maybe they would get it right in S2.

The thing with the Saint is that he's a force of nature. He plays a specific role and only shows up like 4 times across the entire comic series, but each time it's pure unadulterated chaos.

The show is already treating the Saint like the prequels treated lightsabers.

"Everyone loves the Saint of Killers, lets put him everywhere! It'll be great!"

Thos panel reminded me so badly that Steve Dilton basically only knows how to draw one face.

I think the show is fine a great job of adapting the comics for TV, rather than slavishly trying to copy it ala watchmen.

Nobody wants to see Jessie with a mullet or hear all the painfully adolescent lines from the comic verbatim.

You can keep the structure, overall story, character motivations, etc. the same without copying the exact hairstyle or lines 1:1. Come on, now.

Cassidy without his shades is a wack as fuck change, even though Joseph Gilgun is perfectly cast. Jesse and his Dad are both terrible alterations, character-wise.

The show has me really interested in the comics but I'm pretty glad I didn't read them before watching the show. It seems like the general consensus is that those who did read before are not having as much fun.

About to go check my parents DVR to watch the new episode, here is to hoping it gets better. :/

EDIT:

So
Hitler's worst day is when he showed off his art and didn't get into art school? The fuck. man fuck hitler and fuck this show.

The Hitler stuff just seemed dumb. It was an awfully long way to go to make Eugene be "bad" without him hurting someone that anyone could sympathize with.

Eugene is going to end up like Nas from The Night Of dealing with the goons in hell.

Brodus Clay getting those Preacher and GLOW checks.

I assumed Tulip might have ripped Viktor off in terms of money, but the reason was much more personal than that.

The Billy Joel fight scene was really cool.

Harilek getting a juicy role any actor would die for, little did he know how literal his dreams would become.

Good episode.
I really like the "one take" fight scene.
I really don't mind the hell part I bet there's more to Hitler than we are being led to believe.

The show tried to play the viewers up on Tulip's twist which led to the build up being uninteresting

Enjoyed this episode for the mystery around the actor and the fight scene. Tulip reveal was eh, but whatever.

As someone who never got around to reading the comic, I'm glad this is different as it still gives me incentive to read it when I get some time.

Yeah, it's really fucking dumb.

And the Tulip backstory... sigh, guess we might as well give up any pretense that this character is even based on Tulip whatsoever, which could be OK if only that story lead up to anything interesting, but right now I really don't fucking care

As usual, I will preface this with a fuck the haters.
Love this show.
Loved season one, season 2 is even more fun.

Ruth Negga does not get nearly the recognition that she deserves.
Dominic is always on pointy.
And Joe as Jessie is a blast.

Had to laugh at the dude from 13 reasons being in hell! This show is fantastic love the fight scenes and the writing is really fun I just wish more people watched it.

Really great episode. Loving this season so far. The fight at the end was really well done, and the Tulip backstory stuff is interesting. Actually wasn't expecting him to be her husband. The Hitler stuff was weird, though.
