I don't really snap buy playsets, usually just grab a singleton if I don't have it unless I know it's in a deck I've been following or an archetype I really enjoy. Is it generally better to just dive in for four ofs? What do you guys do?

I snap buy playsets if I don't have them and I think they're gonna spike.

I just don't know if I actually want to play the deck. I think it looks fun, but at the same time, I just completed Eldrazi Tron.

My poor Jund deck doesn't get to see the light of day lately. :(

I bought 4 since they're $1ea but I don't normally do that. Oh well.

I'll go back to trying to brew a fun BG sac deck (for modern).

I wanted to try and make a jank BG gods deck for standard but nothing was really coming together. Maybe with Ixalan.

is gross

especially if you just skulked it back into your hand.

Modern Nexus posted this article a few days ago that I think proposes an interesting theory on why Jund has basically vanished from the Modern Scene. While the site has been less consistent in their content since the sale, I do think that that the underlying theory(Eldrazi Tron being brutal for Jund to beat) is worth considering for where Jund went and why Shadow is now the "fair" deck.

Olive's up to 3 Zurs. They're super cheap right now, grab a set.
I mean, it makes sense that Olive's jumping in on Zur, because he's a tutor that is a creature,
Immediately puts the Enchantment into play, etc.

The only real downside is that he's legendary, but it's still a cool interaction.

What's the entry fee/prize distribution like? 13 packs for 8th out of 43 is a lot. I came 1st out of 39 and only got 8 packs - my LGS does pretty flat distributions for prereleases, with everybody getting at least one pack.

As a Jund player, I appreciate you posting this. Very interesting article.
I hope that Jund returns to the top one day. I could scream Unban DRS! Unban BBE! But I know that's not the answer.

EDIT: But also on the other hand, I just built Eldrazi Tron. I nearly had Bant Eldrazi finished when I decided to switch over to E-Tron and I'm glad that I did.

ayyyyyyyyy death's shadow nerf

Death's Shadow is affected by a rules change in HOU.

Here's the old version of 107.1b (edited for brevity, because it's a bunch of text):

If a calculation that would determine the result of an effect yields a negative number, zero is used instead, unless that effect sets a player's life total to a specific value, doubles a player's life total, sets a creature's power or toughness to a specific value, or otherwise modifies a creature's power or toughness.

Here's the new version:

If a calculation that would determine the result of an effect yields a negative number, zero is used instead, unless that effect sets a player's life total to a specific value, doubles a player's life total, or sets a creature's power or toughness to a specific value.

What this means: Only can be a 13/13 now

I know it was 6 rounds and people in top 8 just split

I think the rest of top 16 might get 5 packs, but maybe 8 i dont really pay much attention

Than some feature match prizes throughout the day

This store always seems to give twice the prizes of other places somehow

I opened 4 mythics, 1 of them a god

Zero idea on any value in this set, ill check later

That is a weird ass interaction w/ combat damage.

This is one of those wacky things where templating is suddenly really important. You can't say "damage that would reduce you to below zero" since then if you took eleven damage while you were at ten life you would instantly lose. You can't say "when you would lose life" because at that point it's too late to replace the effect the same way. You could say something like "if you would lose life and your life total would be below zero, instead your life total is zero and you gain poison counters equal to the number of life you would have lost past zero," but I'm not sure that works under the rules and it's hard to make it clear how it works when you're already below zero. This is probably the best option despite that particular wonky interaction.

Startled Awake + Fraying Sanity starting to take off like rockets

Wife just barely got in on Fraying Sanity at $1.99 a piece

Startled Awake is another problem. Card is now $5 a piece.

Umm....so apparently the Nicol Bolas statue from Prime 1 Studio was showcased at Wonderfest (figure convention) in Japan back in February! Like, more than 5 months ago. And not a single peep on Reddit or MTGSalvation.

I can't believe how slept the community was on this, smh. And someone posted more pics of Ajani, but they used Photobucket so all the images are dead. I'll see if I can find those for you guys.

This is as far as I got on the Fraying Sanity deck

Thoughts?

I'd play Fraying Sanity and Startled Awake and fill the rest of the deck with control cards, not mill. Maybe go red for Hour of Devastation and Goblin Deep-Dweller to recast Startled Awake (and Hour) without having to rely on a 1/1 Persistent Nightmare. Oh, and Cathartic Reunion. You just need to activate the combo twice to win. Watchers of the Dead seems bad, not sure about Manic Scribe either

Cool statue but it would be cooler if it was modeled after he finished tying his tie

The deck has already evolved way past that, I'll post a new list later

i don't get why pros are making so many grixis control lists right now. just to sell copies of nicol bolas?
This set has a pretty obvious Grixis slant. Bolas, the Gods, the Modular cards. It makes sense that people would at least try it out early in the format, even if it doesn't end up being a real deck.

I can see UR control playing 1 or 2 Bolas as the top end. Resolving it in an empty or almost empty board is incredibly hard to beat.

she actually makes an empty board.

of the grixis slant among commons and uncommons the UR cards outclass the black cards once again. The gods have to contest with gearhulks first and gearhulks come out on top with that.

They're running survey sampling size like their MTGO dailies results. This method will produce more diversity in opinions on the new set.
Typically, they'll ask for demographic information, then let you know if they already have enough data from that segment. This is the entire survey being closed less than a half hour after it went up. I can't imagine that they've gotten enough data in such a short time frame.

First response comes in:

"I love it, the set is amazing! Can't wait to see how it shakes up standard"

SHUT IT DOWN

As noted here, this more generally means that creatures that boost others equal to their power can no longer give negative P/T. No more Grasp of Darkness Wrath!

M-Files HOU part 1
* Melissa talks a lot about how much she likes eternalize, particularly due to how all tokens being the same size minimizes memory issues and you can do more to justify recurring the creature. I feel like we'll see more mechanics like it in the future.
* Desert's Hold originally gained you 4 life if you had a desert, but it led to people holding onto the card for too long, waiting for a desert, instead of playing it without the bonus.
* Adorned Pouncer was originally a human, but SOI made human decks too strong. This led to the other cat tribal in the block.
* Solemnity originally affected planeswalkers too.
* Strategic Planning was reprinted for Vintage.
* Imaginary Threats was meant to be a weaker Sleep, which they don't feel is appropriate for uncommon.
* From the conversation, Hour of Eternity was originally a 3UU instant that eternalized a creature from any graveyard. They were cautioned about how it was stronger than black's usual reanimation spells and potentially even Liliana, so the current card was to make it more blue than black.
* Razaketh originally didn't have to pay life to tutor, just sacrifice a creature, but they were worried about it getting out of hand.
