Halo 5: Guardians |OT5| Is HaloGAF irrelevant now?

Just played some Halo 4 Fiesta in MCC and noticed they had AAs disabled, so I tried playing it without using sprint and damn did it feel good. A lot less sluggish and more responsive than Halo 3, would've been great if the game came out like that. Ah, what could've been.

Anyway, that just got me so excited for the H3:A playlist coming soon. 343i really nailed a lot of the core gameplay mechanics in 5, so that with classic setting should be an absolute blast.

So I've just moved into a new flat and I've not had internet for over a week (won't get it for another 2 weeks as well :().

However, I discovered a BT WiFi with FON hotspot is nearby (British people will understand what I'm talking about)* and I tried playing on that.

You guys haven't experienced lag until you've tried playing Halo on WiFi with FON... That said, still managed to do pretty well. I'm not sure if that's because my opponents sucked or if I've just got really good at handling lag.

*In terms of quality it's pretty much like shitty hotel WiFi but worse. We're talking spikes of up to 1000 ping.

Pffft, I'm from the land down under playing on USA P2P and region selection for decades, get off my lawn :)

Also just replayed the H4 opening mission in MCC and that shit is pure gold, forgot how fucking great that epilogue and first mission is. Pure throw back to CE IMO.

343 easily has one of the best cinematic directors in the industry with Brien Goodrich, from opening and ending cinematic's in Halo 4 to the opening one in Halo 5. I wish they used him more and had him more involved in the overall game, it would be cool to see him director more in game gameplay moments. I wish he took on a roll similar to Druckmann were he could work closely with the story director (Kevin Grace) deciding were the story will go and how to direct story into the gameplay like all the little gameplay moments in the last of us that have an effect on the characters or story. It often feels like in 343's halo games (not that bungie was better at this) that the story, gameplay and world feel disjointed, especially when they have focused more on the story and lore than bungie did. It feels like the locations don't have a big enough relation to the story let alone any story about the world which in scifi is often the most interesting part (It would have been cool to be able to explore a Forerunner place of worship on Sanghelios or on a human colony be able to go through a bar and listen to the chatter). Gameplay doesn't seem to have any effect on story or the world, it's gameplay then cut to a cinematic and story has started then cut back to gameplay. It feels like gameplay is just there to chase a cinematic which doesn't work when you put so much focus on story, it doesn't help that the worlds often feel sterile. Games like Metro, LOU, Bioshock, Gears (wether you like the story or not) etc all do this really well, they have a really good gameplay design with 5 that they can tweak (replace sprint with faster walk speed) to be able to make a really good feeling multiplayer as well as campaign. But I feel like they have to go further and really knock it out of the park because Halo 5 like Frank has said has given them a really good base to build of especially in terms of multiplayer that I hope allows them to focus more on the campaign. They at least appear to be taking their time now going by what they have said of Halo 6.

Does anyone know if Sparth still works at 343? I always loved his Halo concept art I only wish his concept are more closely mirrored the in game representation.

Last I checked he's still art director.

Thats good to hear, I have always loved his take on Halo as it has that unknown worlds look which I really like along side his lighting which unfortunately never gets realised in the game.

To go from this:
tumblr_nq5tweQIda1r5ajivo2_1280.jpg

To this:

It goes from amazing concept art to a over saturated lego build, although A.R.C is still an incredibly impressive map to pull of on a technical level at a locked 60fps. It highlights how good the engine can be especially what they could do with a second go around on the Xbox One let alone the X without development trouble. It'll be exciting to see what they can do with Halo 6 because Halo 4 pulled of matching the concept art really well

Edit: I think Sparth is the senior art director after Kenneth Scott left, but with Jeremy Cook joining the studio do we know if there has been any further switch ups. Is Jeremy or Sparth senior art director for Halo 6, because I love both their art work. I do prefer Sparth's concept art a lot more but I love how Jeremy realises concept art in-game, the transition between the Halo Wars 2 concept art and the in-game and Blur cinematic's is amazing. You can tell that he has worked at ILM and Blur with how well he takes concept art and pushes it to the forefront graphically, I hope Jeremy pushes the 343 team towards the highest graphical bar due to his experience at ILM and Blur. The way Halo 4 completely out matched all other games on 360 graphically was very impressive and I would love to see 343 do that this Gen especially with X. Sparth's concept art and visual design and Jeremy actually pushing that art in-game accurately and at the highest graphical bar would be a really amazing team up, finally getting Sparth's concept art accurate in game with Jeremy really hitting that Halo aesthetic would be incredible. Imagine Sparth's concept art for Sanghelios being accurately represented in-game:

Recently reinstalled Halo 5 and I've encountered a couple weird bugs. At a start of a game of Oddball on Molten, the game gave me the default control scheme even though I had bumper jumper selected; it did not revert back to default because when I checked it in the settings, it had not changed from bumper jumper.

Also, I just booted up the multiplayer and whenever I try to enter a playlist, an error message pops up telling me that it could not find a suitable server for all members of my fire team, even though I am playing alone at the moment. I am not banned or anything, so I'm not sure why that is popping up.

Edit: And just lost two games of BTB in a row, first game 22-100 and second 0-150. Huge fan of zero team balancement and mediocre forge maps. Never playing that again, unless they add Magnum starts.

Sparth art is awesome, I can understand the downgrades due to geometry and perf etc though.

Also thinking about the X1X launch I reckon 343/MS should consider bundling Halo 5 4K enhanced for FREE with every console. A nice population boost, it's really not going to affect sales revenue this late in the day is it? Then there's REQs to turn some revenue as well for 343/MS. This also promotes the current top shelf H5 MM for Halo 6, when it arrives.

Thoughts?

Sure, if it's preinstalled.

Those that don't want it could just delete it. But RIP to any data caps if it included a download code.

Doesn't the X1X come with a one month free trial for Xbox Game Pass? If it does, then there will definitely be people trying out Halo 5. Would be nice to see it bundled, though.

Factory installed sounds like a real nice, dev cheap method and near-insta-ready to play on the day you power up your X1X.

We all know a patch or 2 would need to be downloaded still :)

I seem to recall one of the things people praised the PS4 for at launch was the inclusion of some F2P titles sitting on the hard drive. Espically with H5e probably ending up at 150+gb having it their waiting would be cool

I really don't get the ranking system in this game. All my friends are higher than me even though I outplay 3 of the 4 of them. It makes 0 sense.

Is the Spielberg TV series still happening?

No rumours or leaks so not any time soon. I think they need to hit the ground running with their new Halo, get their ducks in a row, make Halo more clear and approachable, not simple just something that makes sense. Perhaps a perspective of rebels, other humans under the UNSC and the ONI response then bring in the alien threat which would be more ideal for a TV show by a long way than trying to replicate the games. Human stories and interactions are much more appealing and broad which helps ground the universe before you introduce aliens.

Landfall was pretty awesome, love his visual style, the start especially is amazing, not fond of the rest.

Apart from Hunt the Truth, Microsoft have really sucked with Halo ads/media since Halo 3 which is hard to beat, that was superb, Hunt the Truth is probably the best but not really an ad. That Fincher ad wasn't that great really but at least Chief looked neat, the Halo 5 one was awful.

All they need to do is make an Anthology series similar to Legends, let multiple directors with multiple visions jump on the show and tell stories within the Halo Universe. Could be live action, animated, whatever; anything goes.

I don't think this is doable with a science fiction show. You'd have to constantly make new sets all the while spending money on a special effects budget.

Hmm didn't think of that. Well then maybe just animated, but another anthology series that focuses on multiple aspects of the EU would still be nice.

What, why? A talented Director loves the franchise and you wanna keep him away lol okay...

After seeing what Blur does with H2A and Halo Wars and whatnot. I am over a live action Halo. It won't have to be another Final Fantasy, let's get a 1 and a half hour long Blur level CGI and cinematics movie with all the top voice actors. That way we can avoid the cringe that was Nightfall.

Also, after Chappie and Elysium, I would say there are way better directors available to tackle this.

Is the Spielberg TV series still happening?

Apparently it is, just at slow-berg's pace is all.

Man I hope they used the Fall of Reach animated series characters and story line as the Season 1 TV series. So much great content exists already that they could do for 4 or 5 seasons to catch up to the games.

Ok, I'll give you the talented bit if it'll make you happy, but he's fundamentally unsuited to Halo. We've seen what he would have done with District 9 and Elysium, and for someone who professes to love Halo he clearly doesn't understand anything about its style. Halo has and never will be gritty shakycam gun POV shots and people exploding like Doom gibs.

Watching the HCS summer series, actually nice to watch leas skilled teams since I can keep up and relate :D

I was wondering, are the Esport overlays like the match score overlay, prize plates and ladder plates part of the Halo 5 custom game mode, accessible for everyone, or do they require a custom build of the game?

District 9 and Elysium aren't halo movies though.

That said, any Halo movie we get is bound to have some grit. Also the series is no stranger to found footage... Halo CE had one very effecting cutscene that used that style.

The flood pretty much guarantee doom gibs.

Such a powerful scene at the time. The tonal shift in 343 Guilty Spark when the Flood were introduced is one of my favorite moments in gaming.

Yeah, old Halo games were basically three thematic genres, you had the high concept space opera, the boots on the ground mil-sim stuff and a switch to survival horror whenever the Flood got introduced.

I feel that's a big part of why their appeal has declined, 343 is down to just the space opera stuff.

You know, I never thought about that....but yeah you are kinda right.

And they cheapened the space opera by pulling back the curtain on Forerunners.

And they cheapened the space opera by pulling back the curtain on Forerunners.

I wouldn't say cheapened but confused the space opera, the casual fan sees the Forerunners (or Prometheans) and assumes that is their entirety. The Prometheans should have clued casual fans into the deeper story of the Forerunners and made them far more intrigued through the Prometheans. But causal fans or even hardcore fans see Prometheans and aren't intrigued by their existence or their relation to the Forerunners, really I think thats one of the main issues with gameplay motivation with the Prometheans in the fact that you see them as a simple mindless pawn ( a similar thing has now happened with the Covenant.) It would be cool if they went down a more horror root with them like I think they should with the flood if they return in Halo 6, they could do a lot of really cool psychological horror with the Prometheans (giving them human personality that shows through in different ways.) After Halo 5 I thought a cool way to go about it is to have Cortana fuck with chief by having him see the Prometheans he kills as the people they were, having someone close to chief become a Promethean would be cool. Also due to the Prometheans having once been ancient humans it would be a cool way to bring them into the forefront of the universe. I think the curtain has to be drawn again but with the precursors/birth of the flood and ancient humans.
