Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age |OT| You Had One Job!

Since i now decided which Quickenings im gonna pick with Shikari i also planned my Espers in advance before i accidentally fuck up.

Hopefully its also gonna help others since i saw multiple people that also have the same job setup.

I think i did a good job of getting the best bonuses while also spreading them out evenly and also fitting to the characters and their jobs visually.

Vaan[Shikari/Foebreaker] - Zalera, Shemhazai
(435 HP, Traveler / Guns 5 and 6)

Balthier[Machinist/White Mage] - Famfrit, Zodiark
(Vanishga, Warp, Slowga, Reflectga, Graviga, Hastega / Numerology, Daggers 5)

Fran[Archer/Red Mage] - Chuchulainn, Zeromus, Exodus
(Firega, Thundaga, Blizzaga, Sleepga / 3rd Channelling / Heavy Armor 8,9,10)

Basch[Bushi/Uhlan] - Belias
(Libra but doesnt really matter which one. Also my boy Basch deserves at least one Esper)

Ashe[Knight/Time Mage] - Mateus, Adrammelech, Hashmal
(Curaga, Regen, Cleanse, Esuna, 230 HP / Cura, Raise / Confuse, Faith, Bravery, Curaja, 3rd Channeling)

Penelo[Monk/Black Mage] - Chaos, Ultima
(Holy, Esunaga, Protectga, Shellga / 2nd, 3rd Swiftness, Telekinesis)

Such an interesting read! As someone quoted, Smith talking about putting Matsuno's characters in a room, and the inherit conflict and intrigue coming from all of them having different motivations, and the back and forth that happens from there. I didn't realize Smith and Reeder did FFXII as contractors, I always thought they were in-house and then must have left after, and that's why they didn't come back for FFXIII, etc. I also always forget how much great voice director work Jack Fletcher did over the years (along with Princess Mononoke), and the anecdote about the casting of Judges was great.

I was pleasantly surprised by Penelo too, and I agree wholeheartedly with your observations. Too bad she becomes pretty much non-existent afterwards.

It's such a shame she's wasted. I would have been so curious to see what they would have done re: the cut subplot with her brother/s and her learning how to fight from him/them. Can't remember the specifics. Loss and grief is such a theme with all of the playable cast, and Penelo's comparatively quite grounded emotionally in the way she approaches everything, she would have an interesting contrast to Ashe and Vaan.

If you happen to have Foebreaker (I don't know about other classes) as a second job the quickening that unlocks Koga Blade also unlocks +390 HP for Breaker.

I was going with a Shikari/Foebreaker combo and had missed this, ha, that's great.

Getting HP10 from FOE shouldn't matter for SHI/FOE because SHI has HP10, too.

//Edit// Actually, I should correct my dismissal, because even though it won't make a difference endgame, Quickening 3 on both SHI and FOE is pretty close to your starting positions, and respectively and conveniently behind Battle Lores tiles and Heavy Armor tiles -- both of which you'll probably prioritize. Whereas, HP10 on SHI is pretty far away and stuck behind a bunch of Accessories.

So it's still a small bonus worth mentioning because even though you don't need Quickening 3 to get HP10 via SHI, using it to get HP10 via FOE most likely gives SHI/FOE its large HP boost much earlier.

remember that 390 hp node apparently blocked on Foebreaker? it's on the shiki board on the right near the Yagyu node, which means i can pick iga and not Koga becasue i would have that node already activated if i chose foebreaker

but i'm still choosing TBM for vaan

From what I've read, Penelo was actually Daisuke Watanabe's favorite character from the game because of all the content he had written for her... which was all left out of the game.

I do like Penelo, but I remember benching her pretty quickly in the original game. It's the reason I've made her a Shikari/Breaker this playthrough. She's going to be glued to the front line this time around.

You are right the 390 HP are also on the Shikari board so you can choose which blade you want without paying attention to that HP bonus.

Made some weird combos this time. Something different! vaan is a white mage/samurai, basch is a knight/black mage and balthier is a machinist/time battlemage.

Playing this game slow, just got the
first esper.

Yay just got my copy.

I didn't get an answer before, but for anyone who's in Japan - the JP version does have full English support (read it on another forum).

Can't wait to get into it.

Just started this. Any advice/tips to keep in mind in regards to being prepared for the later bosses? Secret weapons? Hidden items? NPCs to talk to? Things to do or not do?

Thank you, this is a huge help to me since this is my exact party haha.

What quickening did you do?

Really interested in keeping all 12 jobs unique and optimizing attack speed animations. I think I'm going to set up my characters like this but input is extremely welcome.

Vaan - Uhlan / Time Mage
Relegating these classes to a character that doesn't appeal to me in a primary party. Good B team tank, I imagine. Spears probably aren't his best weapon.

Balthier - Shikari / Foebreaker
Good damage dealing on a fast hitting sword wielder.

Basch - Bushido / Knight
Good A team tank and great damage and light healing potential.

Ashe - Black Mage / Monk
Good damage + HP.

Penelo - Red Battlemage / Archer
Good midrange damage & support.

Fran - White Mage / Machinist
Steady damage independent of stats while not healing.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
So I have a quickenings question-

Apparently you are only allowed to unlock 3 on a board. Does this mean I can unlock 3 on each of a character's 2 boards, or just 3 total?

I also heard something about how I shouldn't unlock the first quickenings I see because that may block me from getting other abilities? What does that mean?

What quickening did you do?

Since realising you get with Vaan the 390 HP bonus no matter with Shikari i changed it again.

Gone with Ninja Swords 1, 2 and 4. (50 LP, 75 LP, 125 LP)

I think the Water Blade with 2 has more use than the Earth Blade with 3.

The other characters have 1 of 4 Quickenings without anything behind on both jobs so pick just the other three Quickenings.

There are 4 Quickenings on a board that is shared with both jobs. If you unlock for example 50 LP Quickening the exact same on the 2nd board is unlocked.

You need to unlock 3 of the 4 since every character has 3 levels of Quickening attacks.

Which 3 of the 4 you pick depends what abilties or bonuses are behind it you want.

The blocking means that if 3 are unlocked the 4th is disappearing and if something is behind it on 1 or both boards you can access it anymore.

How early should I be able to do stage 3 of the trials? I wanted to steal that sword, but I get wrecked in that stage. I just picked up Balthier and Fran, for reference.

Holy crap. Last time I played I got stuck on the bird boss in the sandsea and stopped playing. So this time I grinded a bit in Lhusu (level 23ish party) and I one shotted the damn thing with a chain of level three quickenings...

I may have over done it.

I REALLY hope Ribbon is in the chest it used to be in. I finally found the Diamond Armlet and it wasn't at any of the locations I remember it being in the original.

Ok, this question is asked almost as much if not more than the "how about these jobs?" question, so here you guys go, in an easy to read image.

So I just checked out the Trial Mode. Is there a guide or list of good items to pick up from this mode to bring into the main game?

The scene at the end of it is the only reason I'm convinced Vaan is in the story

Is that the one with Ashe and Vaan under the stars, and he talks about his dreams and stuff?

Anyway, got to the
hennes mines
. I think I am way under-leveled because I've been getting totally destroyed.

Nah it's the one where he asks Fran how old she is

This game is finally getting challenging. I also love the hidden bosses and secrets in this game off the beaten path.

They just don't make game's like this anymore. If the story pans out this could become my favorite FF of all time.

Is there a guide to the job/license system out there that doesn't assume you've played the game and know the characters and content out there? And not just a tier list or "what you should choose".

I'm about 14 hours in and this game is so good. The fast forward for the little battles and running around the town is nice. I can see myself playing this for a bit.

This is exactly my class lineups. I was worried giving Ashe so many Espers but ah well she needs it.

So I noticed the clan provision shop as new items compared to the original FFXII

First item is a decoy spell, does anyone have the new updated list from the clan provisioner?

Can someone explain to me the optimal way to go about Espers? I gave the first one you get to Vaan...oops?

potentially. depends on what abilities you want to unlock if the esper is blocking it.

you can always reload and mull it over thaks to the generous auto save system

Despite so much grinding, I'm level 36 and some bosses can still kick my ass. I would have reached level 99 in FFXV lol
