Right-wing 'Defend Europe' Identitarians charter ship to intercept & return migrants

Pan-European members of the right-wing group known as the Identitarian Movement announced this week that they had chartered a ship and were sailing to the Mediterranean to stem the flow of refugees and migrants.

The group, calling themselves Defend Europe, crowd-funded more than $100,000 (87,000 euros) over about a month to fund their so-called "search and rescue" mission.

Borrowing the Greek lambda as its logo, a reference to the Spartan shields used against the Persian Empire, they presents themselves as a movement against "the Islamic invasion of Europe" while dismissing nationalist labels placed on comparable groups.

The group plans to use their 40-meter (130-foot) ship to intercept smuggler boats before NGO groups can reach them and return them to the Libyan coast guard.
"Our goal is to step in where our politicians are failing and to do what is necessary to stop the deadly illegal migration into Europe," the group wrote on their crowd-funding page.

Can't governments just rebuke the license of the officers in the ship? They are a danger, I highly doubt they would put anybody to safety and would probably try to sink and kill as many refugees as they can.

Hopefully this might cause the EU to actually start responding to the crisis better. More naval assets in the Med to pickup refugees and migrants for processing.

the proper solution would be boots on the ground and have processing camp on the lybian coast and that is not gonna happen.
Picking people in the sea is plaster on a wooden leg.

As long as those camps are properly run, which is a big if in a country like Libya :/ Letting them all into Italy has been a joke, though.

Saving those ships only increases the amount of smugglers who rob people of every penny before sending them on this hazardous trip.
The humane solution would be proper immigration.

It's usually more "hey, that's too much taxes", not "let me drown these migrants myself".

The problem is you can't exactly let those people drown, either. If they're processed at proper facilities in a timely manner it would probably cut down on migration as economic migrants don't make the cut for asylum.

This does not sound like a good idea. The immigration problems there need to be solved, because the current ways are just helping smugglers. But you can't have private organizations like this coming in and dragging them back to Libya.

At the same time, we should not have private organizations having them bring those boats to Italy also. It only creates a bigger problem.

The EU and countries in North-Africa need to work together to stop the flow of people coming through there. Just moving millions of people every year to camps in Italy is not a solution.

Yeah, once they're on the water you obviously have to help, no question about that. It's a difficult problem to solve especially with EU countries not being all that willing to properly split up the immigrants among them.

You mean those brave warriors who fought the Persians, grew jealous of Athens, had what is best described as a 'fit' about this and subsequently joined with said Persia to fight Athens.

I get that these guys are proud to be European but should probably choose their imagery from more than a film made by Zack Snyder or at least have a decent grasp of the history of the continent they 'love.'

What utter cunts. I'm surprised people could even be this evil and hateful. Sure, if you genuinely have an issue with immigration or have any fears then its fine to have a debate about, I think you're wrong, but its a discussion worth having with rational people. This, however is not rational.

I'm assuming they're less likely to be raped/robbed/assaulted/sold into slavery on the way and men are still the traditional breadwinners of the family, so the impression is that they'll be able to more easily get a job. Plus, they also have more freedom to leave the home.

Even France or Belgium are not interesting and they tried to get to Britain.
They will not stay in Hungary or Romania....

These are economic migrants who pay people smugglers a lot of money to get them into Europe. The people smugglers pack dozens of people on a rubber boat and send them on a way so that Frontex can pick them up close to the Libyan coast. Frontex is so reliable that they've transformed themselves from a rescue operation into a ferry service for economic migrants from Africa and Asia. Just look at this chart from the European Commision and you'll see they're operating ever closer to the Libyan coast.

Just because they accepted funding from Persia doesn't mean they joined war with them against Athens. Right after they won the Peloponnesian war they went to war with Persia, so?

Which is an extra problem, because young men with little to do are a risk group for crime and other trouble.

If people want to help refugees or immigrants, that is fine of course. But that should be done through UN programs to take in families, not just the young men who pay smugglers to get here.
