Splatoon 2 review thread

Does the game really only let you play on 2 maps per day? The 2 hour map cycles in the splatfest felt a little long tbqh.

The Splatfest and the original were 2 hours, so I think that's wrong.

I fucking hate it. I was really close to cancelling my pre-order over that and loadouts still being annoying, but the core gameplay is still so good that I just deal with the bullshit.

Splatoon 2 Is Great, But It's Not Exactly New

Something something Call of Duty.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry, First thing that went through my head. I hope at least they say something similar about Call of Duty.

Should be: 79-82 if it's just almost the same game as 1 without any new cool modes or ideas even if it's fun. And no, a lame ass horde mode doesn't count.
+ That smartphone app nonsense.

Will be: 92-94 cause it's a Nintendo game.

Do we have any idea how much content this game is launching with vs. the first game? Like how many maps there will be and access to ranked and such?

Below 85 underrates the game but I've got a feeling that's where it'll end up, unfortunately. Unique, fun multiplayer shooter with a single-player campaign that will likely be more engaging than what you'd find in 98% of multiplayer-focused games. Total must-own.

Ah, ok. 2 hours is a lot more reasonable, even if I'm still not sure I like the system.

The first game had 4 hour rotations. Splatoon 2 has two hour rotations like the Splatfest demo.

Why would they say anything about Call of Duty? CoD has new campaigns, new settings, new maps, and new weapons every year. Typically you only see repeat maps for DLC. If CoD basically the same every year, then comparing it to Splatoon 2 makes it look even worse.

we will know in less than an hour but it seems to be launching with more content in every aspect. seems like there will be more than 5 maps at launch, more than 2 modes at launch, and a meatier single player campaign. seems like it'll have more weapons available at launch too.

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.

Getting this the moment I can, but I would be shocked if it gets above an 81 MC. Can't wait for Friday!

My sense is that things like duplicate maps from the first game could weigh heavily on people's reactions. In the sense that if there's a strong selection of all-new maps, people will respond well. If there are more than a couple carry-overs that don't have some novel spin, I can see more negative reactions. And similarly, if they've launched this game with as little content as the first during its first month or so, I think there'll be backlash, even knowing more is on the way.

My hard-copy is already paid for, and I'm hoping to see a breakdown of what to expect from the story mode along with reactions to multi-player so far. Bosses were a high point in the first game.

Splatoon 2 has literally all of that. There are all of two returning maps I believe, and everything else is brand new, including the campaign, most weapons, specials, multiplayer maps, etc.

Did you just send me a cassette tape because I haven't seen something so edgy since 13 reasons why.

Agreed i only play like a handfull multiplayer online modes and that's GTA/Red Dead, COD Zombies (or some other coop modes in other games), Mario Kart, Smash , Arms , Battlefield and Pokemon + Splatoon. Rest is meh and i can't touch MMO's cuz they consume my life.

But it still has ink. Same game. Totally unoriginal.

85 mc.

Kid now, Squid now.

This is what I'm predicting honestly. Most reviewers don't fully get into the depth of this game plus the typical "eww rotations" and the expected "no native voice chat" criticism. Despite the great amount of QoL improvements and updates to the game overall it won't be too much higher than Splatoon's 81 MC score.

I'd like to see the Venn diagram of reviewers who are Switch owners and who played Splatoon Wii U long enough to see all those maps.

I can see it taking a hit for the app-dependent social features, time-locked Salmon Run, and maybe the unwieldy replacement of the old GamePad map (still a nagging compromise for me, much as I've made my peace with it over the extensive demo sessions). But the product being reviewed this time is the full package of what the first Splatoon took months to become, and who knows how good the single-player is. I don't follow reviews enough to know if norms have shifted, but relative to historical precedent, mid-80s would be par.

This sounds right. I have no faith in reviewers to gauge depth in anything; they are professionally incentivized to be serial dabblers.
