Archie's Sonic Comics officially cancelled

DFIfdOAV0AAgQlk

EDIT: Sorry I posted the wrong tab which had an earlier title draft! The partnership between Archie Comics and Sega has been ended.

The title is not representative of the announcement. It makes it sound like they're ending sonic comics period.

Well, the Sega and Archie partnership in particular. The announcement suggests Sega are looking for a new publishing partner, presumably to helm a new series.

For future reference, the title got a quick mod edit. It originally didn't have "Archie's" at the start.

I never read these outside of Worlds Collide, but this is pretty disappointing.

I was just thinking about this comic today. I never read it, but I did read a summary of that nutter guy who went off the rails into Knuckles' extended family by making a bunch of "original" characters that were basically Knuckles with hair, Knuckles in a hat, etc.

Surprisingly I did the title edit! Apparently if I edit the title of a thread right after I post it, then the change actually reflects on the forums as well. Pretty neat!

End of an era. The "Sonic The Hedgehog" and "Knuckles The Echidna" Archie comics got me into the medium. I don't know whether I would like comics and manga as much as I do now, if I wasn't exposed to those series' at such a young age. This really makes me want to go back and read them, as I haven't kept up the comics in many, many years.

Perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane.
RIP these comics were how I first heard of Sonic. It was issue 110, I believe.

My post from the OT thread:

That's extremely annoying because Sonic was in the middle of anniversary story arcs that will now never finish and the dozens of issues won't be collected. I'm guessing IDW or Boom will jump on it, which means we'll actually get sales, discounts, no delays, and trades in a timely manner.

Archie is a garbage publisher and it will be interesting to see what happens when the Riverdale relaunch dies like it already seems to be.

Fuck, man :(

Any chance in hell they'll finish up the Archives series?
Archie mismanaged their business to relaunch the Archie book and that led to all that stuff going on indefinite hiatus.

Is the Mega Man series still going. I read a bunch of those and really liked it.
Nope, put on indefinite hiatus a while ago. It didn't even reach Mega Man 3, IIRC. Granted, that's because it did a bunch of other stories and got interrupted by crossovers.

Disappointed for so many reasons. Mega Drive spin off wont be finished, not reaching issue 300, and before all this nonsense started i had just paid for another year of the sub. Well archie can just keep the money, they make nothing else id even want to read.

Oh yeah, this shit:

Comics jumped the shark when half the cast could fart and destroy multiverses. I think this was a bit overdue.

The cancellation was confirmed three months ago, sadly.
It's too bad. Ian Flynn was doing some really damn good work before the forced reboot and then following it as well. Hope he's allowed to continue in some fashion, wherever it goes.

There was some chatter about perhaps IDW putting in a bid for the IP.

For the record, the series had already gone through a major reboot a few years ago to erase all the Penders stuff. By many accounts, the series has been quite good recently.

How did they mismanage their business? or has someone done an article or youtube bit covering this?
Basically they tried to crowdfund the new Archie line with a kickstarter asking for 350k, and the rewards were things like $15 for a twitter follow and $20 for a digital code of the first issues. Both fans and pros got pissed off with Archie, so they cancelled the kickstarter and paid for it themselves. The result of this was Mega Man and Sonic Boom going on indefinite hiatus, as well as all of their trades being massively delayed with stuff like the Sonic archives being cancelled. They are still dealing with massiv delays to this day and their trades schedule is beyond ruined. The Sonic books are now being cancelled because Archie doesn't want to pay Sega.

Stings, but the talent putting the series together deserves better than a publisher that doesn't want them and is weighed down with legal baggage.

Cleared 3, got canned right on the cusp of 4.

It had actually gotten good long before the soft reboot, and the reboot is probably one of the things that ultimately killed it, as it wrote out a ton of characters, killed a bunch of plot threads and turned away a lot of long-time readers.

Too bad Sega will never use Sally or Nicole or Bunny in any of their games.

I was there for issue 0 in the early 90s.

End of an era... but of course I tuned out two decades ago.

Maybe now we'll finally get proper TPBs of the Mike Gallagher comics. IDW did a great job with their TMNT Adventures books. Hopefully we get a release something along those lines.

Damn...I've been collecting these since 1997...this is so rough for me. They are the reason I learned to draw, and kept my Sonic love alive during all the times the games were either in limbo or complete shit. The SatAM characters especially mean a lot to me. Sucks to see we probably won't be seeing them again.

That would be pretty nice, actually.
I'm not a huge fan of the archives/selects format, I'd kill for a formal TPB edition.

Yeah, they're trash. The only re-release they ever did that I liked was the trade that collected the original mini-series by Gallagher/Shaw!. I think the archives with their garish computer re-coloring are horrid.

Eh, you could always go for the black & white Legacy Collections like I did.
