Wkd BO 07•21-23•17 - Slam Dunk' for Nolan, Apes escape, not rough Girl's Trip, Luc

I just want to say Michael Ealy hiding under the bed in The Perfect Guy is probably my favorite scene in any trailer ever.

Yes. Thank you.

Or it could be the opposite. Maybe people wanted a War and got a lousy prison escape instead. Dawn is more deserving of the War title.

Interesting. It could be that people, despite the critical praise, just weren't feeling the film and word of mouth reflected that.

I'm sorry but that sounds like bullshit

I haven't seen the film yet so you'll have to elaborate on that thought.

Wow, Planet of the Apes is doing really badly.

Probably the only smart big budget blockbusters in recent memory I can think of off the top of my head. Makes sense that the marketplace would reward them with bomba status.

Guess I should give Fox credit for sticking with the franchise anyways despite never really being megahit status.

Did you see the movie? it's a solid movie, but the name and advertising is very deceptive, War hahahahaha...

Ah, you haven't seen it? Yea, the title "War for the Planet of the Apes" absolutely sets expectations that I don't think the movie meets for most of the movie going audience. There's maybe like 2 or 3 action scenes in the movie? One to open the movie with and one to close, and maybe one thrown around in the middle some where.

We had the Raimi movies etc. Spider-man just doesn't have that allure of being "new" I guess. We've seen him on the big screen already. It was a good movie, but that was it. IMO it's a typical marvel movie.

You look at WW. First time on the big screen in her own solo movie and it's good and it does gangbusters.

I don't think Spider-man has that allure of "newness" anymore if that makes sense.

Eddie Redmane not knowing how to control his voice was amazing

I'd forgotten that he was even in this! After that Oscar win Warners did him a solid by largely burying him in the publicity and he did them a solid back by starring six hundred Fantastic Beasts films.

I'm probably going to check it out this week but that could be a huge factor too. The film doesn't deliver on what it's title and trailers suggested.

EDIT - It could be a hug factor too!

I think people are overanalysing Apes relatively poor showing. I just don't think people wanted to see what I'm told is essentially a war at this time given the state of the world.

Mix that feeling with the franchise fatigue that set in for Pirates and Transformers and you have an audience that will probably catch this on a second window like Blu Ray, HBO or Netflix or whatever.

You really going to post this on the week a literal World War movie grossed over 50 million?

Totally agree, it's not just about making a good movie. People underestimate how important a role novelty plays when it comes to box office gross. Audiences waited 40 years to see Wonder Woman on the big screen.

I imagine it's definitely a factor. It's his 7th appearance on the big screen in 15 years and has been rebooted twice.

He lucked out on timing for sure, all that oscar buzz drowned out his angry voice in Jupiter.

For Spidey: I'd also like to say that the marketing wasn't that great? I know they played up the Tony Stark factor but man, the difference in trailer quality between Marvel's other stuff and Sony's Spidey trailers is night and day.

Had I not seen Holland in Civil War and been utterly convinced of him as a great Spiderman in that movie, I probably would have had little to no interest in Homecoming based off of the trailers/media for the movie itself.

My problem was with Apes is that they advertised it as a total war where one of the two sides was going to get wiped out, and you're supposed to be rooting for the apes to beat the humans. It's like I'm rooting for myself to die. I doubt the movie works like that but why would I want to go see that

They were trying to grab your prize. They work for the mercenary. The masked man.

Spidey's marketing had no real hook beyond it was a Spider-Man movie.

I know what you're saying but I feel like these films are offering up to different experiences. One is a straight up WW2 film the other is a VFX heavy, general audience film about super evolved apes.

That's an interesting point. I never considered that.

I've thought about this too. For a trilogy where the main character is an Ape, I think they've all done about as well commercially as you can hope for.

Spidey's about to hit anywhere from $700-800 worldwide and you would think it's bombing harder than Transformers 5 based off this thread.

I know that. There's a reason Kevin Hart is a box office draw, Tyler Perry is rich, and we keep getting the same thriller every September from Screen Gems.

Who is going to be the first to make a cinematic universe out of these erotic black thrillers? I mean, they already cycle through the same black actors.

Sure, but that doesn't matter to what you said lol. You said you thought it was because people didn't want to see a war movie due to the dark nature of the world right now, and one Dunkrik is a straight up pure war movie. Wonder Woman has also the backdrop of a war movie. I don't think that really matters to most audiences right now.

The Amazing Spider-Man movies made between $700-800 worldwide as well and Sony still wasn't pleased.

Though to be fair, Homecoming was cheaper than both so maybe they're learning.

Because that's in the range of the Amazing Spider-Man movies, with the addition of Iron Man. But at least they kept the budget under $200M this time. And it should outdo both Amazing movies, even without accounting for the worse market these days.

And it's a comic book movie, so unless it breaks $1B it won't make its money back.

edit:

it's confusing when two of these threads are on the front page

Now I don't personally think Homecoming is bombing, but I think perception has it as just another Marvel movie. Not that it's bad thing.

Again, I feel like I answered your question. Is Dunkirk a War film, yes. But it's based on historical fact, it's a known quantity. A, by all accounts, depressing Apes may have been too dark to connect with the audience it was targeting.

Also, folding Wonder Woman into this conversation is nonsense. If you're going to do that you might as well stick Last Knight in there too because that has loads of military set pieces.

That wasn't the point I was trying to make.

Knowing Sony, who expected Men In Black 3 to make a billion dollars, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they were expecting Civil War or Iron Man 3 money from this.

Homecoming cost 25+ million less to make and will earn substantially more money domestic than ASM2 did. It's going have a nice profit.

It basically saved Spidey on the big screen. ASM3 would have Ultra bombed. That's about as much as you could ask from it

Lol, what? Wonder Woman was set in WWI and that was a key part of the marketing and trailers for the film. How is that comparable to Last Knight because it has military set pieces? It's okay, you said something a little silly in the context of the week, it's really not that big of a deal lol

ASM put the budget to good use at least. Those movies are stunning visually, two of the best in the genre.

Adjusted:
Mummy 1 = 272 million domestic
Mummy 2 = 317 million domestic
Mummy 3 = 127 million domestic

so yeah its definitely a huge disappointment for Cruise's Mummy, better off just making Mummy 4.

I was joking. That aside the mummy cartoon that spun off from the movies were pretty good

So, yeah. I saw Valerian. Was rooting for it but it's awful and deserves to bomb. Not going to have much in the way of legs either.

Plinko

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
That is really, really disappointing for Apes. I loved it.

Valerian bombing was pre-ordained, but it sucks that the movie itself apparently isn't very good, either. Isn't the comic series like straight up legendary?

Hey Busty, a few weeks ago you said we would end up seeing the trades start to report on big Sony vs. Disney arguments.

Where they at?
