Putting an amiibo against my controller to unlock something does not feel fun.

I have a small collection of amiibo. In fact, I probably own about 20 of them in all. Suffice to say, even in recent games, many times I have the means to unlock part or all of the amiibo-locked content that Nintendo develops for its games. Here's the thing I feel like nobody is discussing though: Putting a figurine against my controller to unlock something does not feel fun. It makes me feel like an exploited chump for owning the figurine.

When amiibo were announced as having storage to hold data, I, probably like many of you, thought that Nintendo intended on using them for interesting applications: i.e. trading data with friends, some sort of amiibo-only adventure game, and maybe even some sort of AR types of experiences. But at this point, Nintendo is simply using them as pay-walls for locked content. That doesn't feel like it's in the spirit of fairness to anyone.... not even owners of the figurines. Every time I hold a figurine over my controller to unlock something, the thought isn't "Wow this is cool." It's more "Wow, you got me Nintendo." They aren't even using their own medium in a fun way. In other words, they aren't doing anything to take advantage of amiibo's unique attributes. They're simply used as a physical form of DLC.

And with the recent thread about the unlocks in Metroid: Samus Returns, a hard mode and gallery that are locked behind amiibo, - things that came standard in Metroid Zero Mission, I have to say, it's truly becoming ridiculous.

If you want to charge me to unlock portions of a videogame that used to be included in the base package, then FINE. I understand the rising costs of development. Make it DLC. But DLC locked behind amiibo just feels unenjoyable even when you own the figurine. Unlocking something with amiibo provides literally no satisfaction. It feels like a chore to even hold the figuring up to the right part of the controller for the amount of time required for the read/write process to occur.

And the fact that you need so many damn figures to access all of the content is just exploitative. It would be one thing if all the Metroid or Zelda amiibo unlocked the same stuff in their respective franchises. But no, you need multiple Zelda amiibo, multiple Metroid amiibo, etc, for each game.

If you like collecting amiibo, FINE. This thread isn't against the figures themselves. Collect them and by all means, enjoy. But if you actually enjoy holding the figure up to a controller to unlock something that should have been there in the first place, I must ask: Why? How is this better than straight DLC or an in-game unlock.

It's the worst form of a content-paywall in the industry. It's worse than generic DLC, and it's worse than randomized loot-crates. I'd go so far as to say that even if amiibo were free and available to everyone, it would still feel like a bad way to lock content. Holding up a figurine to a controller completely breaks the flow of a gaming session. It takes too long and is not at all fun or interesting. It's a lazy implementation. And the totally cost prohibitive aspect of collecting amiibo makes it even worse. Amiibo are not used in any way that's interesting or enjoyable and they're a total blemish (albeit a small one) on nearly every recent title which incorporates them.

I'm more annoyed about having to use them to access basic functionality. Fucking can't store loadouts in splatoon 2 without them, and they are an inconvenient as fuck way of swapping between loadouts compared to just having a damn list to select.

I *think* the idea there was to help with tournaments, as your Amiibo would actually function like a memory card.
I like the idea on its own, but as the only solution yeah, it's kind of annoying.

Thankfully I have a shit ton of Amiibo

I came in to say this. The novelty of using Amiibo to switch between loadouts was fun the first few times, but now it's just tedious.

Maturity, bitches.
Amiibo should be for cool bonuses that have no really impact on the game itself, like the skins in Yoshi's Woolly World. It means the primary function is a collectable, with the game content a neat secondary bonus.

When they lock content, like hard mode in TP HD, to one Amiibo, then it's not nearly as great. I don't really fancy the Ganondorf amiibo, but if I want to play with double damage, with TP not mirrored, I'd be forced to buy it.

I agree, it always felt like a watered down Skylanders for me. I like the amiibos but I don't like that content is being locked out without them.

Not to mention, putting amiibos on my Joycons actually does not feel intuitive at all like it did on the Wii U. It feels like they barely fit the function into the controllers versus having its own little spot.

As an additional function it wouldve been fine, as an only solution its obnoxious. Taking my switch over to my brothers house meant not having loadouts to swap between because I wasnt bringing my Amiibos with me. Its really obnoxious when using at home as I have to grab my amiibos off the shelf and keep em around for the play session.

I think it's fun to unlock the Pac-Man helmet in MK8 and use it while playing MK8.

I don't object to this, but let me also buy the skin as DLC. What is the harm? Why lock it behind a physical item?

I love it personally.

But how can you love not having access to content by any other means? I'm not saying to get rid of amiibo. I'm saying let me buy content digitally.

having a stack of nfc cards to unlock stuff in games is extremely stupid but I do it because I'm not spending $150+ to get all the costumes in mk8

Splatoon 2 was really the first time I tried scanning these things and the process is so god damn time consuming. You have to scan something like 3-4 times the first time and name the amiibo. I tried scanning all the Splatoon 1 and 2 amiibo I have so this took way longer than I cared for. Doing all this only gives you 1 of the 3 items. You have to come back and scan again later for the rest. So stupid.

It's fine to me, for the most part. My son had a little learning curve where he was pressing it against the right joy-con hard enough to click the stick, but he got over it quick.

He absolutely LOVED it with Mario Maker, and I'm sure he will again if they make it for Switch.

I buy every amiibo because I like them as collectible figurines and I treat the unlockable features as added bonuses. With that in mind, I am still annoyed with how terribly they have been utilized in games.

I don't think I will ever buy a game that utilizes amiibo well. I don't want to have to either buy plastic trash or feel like I'm being arbitrarily locked out of features/content.

LOL, Nintendo.

edit: My own $.02 is that unlocking DLC with amibo is ridiculous.

Try touching something else with your amiibo...
Maybe that will be fun OP

I don't own any but I was looking at the Cloud amiibo yesterday on Amazon and i really liked the figurine. Then I started looking for BotW amiibos (specifically to unlock the wolf) and seeing that they are selling for like 30+ on Amazon and then it started to make me feel like a chump too for even considering the purchase.. Feels bad. Nintendo insisting on being different at the cost of convenience is getting annoying.

It's a good idea in the sense of like a memory card, bring your setup to the big tournament lol.
But still they could have a list inside your game. Also looking forward to Amiibo data tempering incoming...

Nintendo did not give you permission to do that, if you're not buying their amiibo you're not entitled to the bonuses either.

You're basically pirating amiibo.

Like pretty much all the 'Toys to Life' products.

Those, to me, are only fun to collect for display purposes, their implications in games are mostly cosmetic and more or less relevant.

While I say that, I prefer the way Amiibo works compared to those Lego Dimensions/Skylanders figurines where you have chunks of the game locked into them.

Oh, sorry. Feels kinda fun to me.

I mean I generally agree with your overall thesis, but not the "holding against controller" bit, I like that.

I finally bought my first amiibos last week just because I've always liked the way they look (the original Splatoon three-pack). I was thoroughly unimpressed with the actual process of using them in-game. Hold them to your controller and it magically unlocks a menu that should have been there in the first place.

I find the whole amiibo thing to be a pretty shitty practice in general. Nintendo's audience would buy these things in droves whether or not they had gameplay funtionality. Locking exclusive content behind them just feels exploitative.

I own every single Smash Bros. amiibo and even I feel as though there should be a way to either digitally purchase a lot of the DLC or acquire it through other means. Stuff like the spinner weapon from Hyrule Warriors shouldn't be locked behind amiibo entirely. Stuff like the costumes in MK8D are a little better but I still think you should be able to get them separately somehow.

Give this man a handshake. I totally agree with this I even prefer to keep them in their package because it's not worth opening them

In other topic, is there an "unofficial" hack, or hacked amiibo chip that uboovks everything kind of like a Game Genie for amiibos? Would be nice...

Yes. There's amiiqo, or people sell cards on eBay with programmed chips in.

What's unfortunate is that they keep developing new Amiibo of an existing franchise to unlock something rather than just focus efforts on what Amiibo already exists; like Smash Link -- put everything unlockable in this. Don't spread multiple awards across multiple versions of Link.
Because that's seemingly what the point of Amiibo was; unlocks some small things across multiple titles.

I am a big fan of the Amiiqo.

It allows me to use my amiibo's without having to keep a pile of them in my living room. Also makes life much easier when traveling. :D

I am SHOCKED Nintendo hasn't done Animal Crossing-style cards for Amiibo, and sold them blind bag like typical cards. They would make so much money.

Hell, I'm surprised they don't do blind bag Amiibo figurines at this point!! I mean it makes no sense why they don't just sell Amiibo unlocks at full price Amiibo price. You know Nintendo fanboys would buy that shit!

I believe it's basically a rewritable NFC-chip, the app allows you to upload the data of an amiibo to the disc on the left, fooling the system into thinking you have that amiibo.

Ahh okay. iPhones have NFC don't they? Or is that locked to card payments?
