Does it Really Make Sense to Have Another Whole Generation of Nintendo Port Begging?

I've been seeing some of this raise its head lately and I just feel like, after the Wii and WiiU, that we should have learned a simple lesson by now.

Most games just aren't coming to the Switch.

The Switch is a great, amazing console that will surely have a satisfying library, but some things should be clear.

Developers probably aren't going to make downgraded ports of games designed to run on consoles with higher technical specifications. They tried that some on the Wii and it was honestly pretty bad.

Even for games that would be "perfect for the Switch," sometimes making a port just doesn't fit with the developer's budget or resources or marketing strategy.

I know that everyone wishes and everyone hopes, but, seriously, Nintendo has been mercilessly assaulting that part of us since we were all devastated to learn that Final Fantasy wasn't coming until the Nintendo 64. It should be dead by now.

That's my take. I could be wrong. I'd like to hear other opinions.

The portability factor has strong appeal. The way it's selling as opposed to the Wii U and the way it can support current engines (UE4) unlike Wii at the time certainly make ports more viable if in the correct ballpark.

I'm personally more tired of people complaining about Switch port begging than actual Switch port begging. I think some titles not coming to Switch can be questioned, like Disney Afternoon Collection. Then again, I don't enter many threads for games not coming to Switch so maybe there are a lot of people there asking for Switch ports. In that case, I apologize.

Damn near every thread having Switch port begging is getting pretty annoying.

I personally see comments like this more than the actual portbegging!

It's a new console I thought this was to be expected.

Honestly, I don't notice it until other people feel the need to complain about it.

I thought this was gonna be about begging for Nintendo exclusives like Bayonetta 2, LOL

Same.

When I see the phrase "Nintendo port begging," I think of people cheering for Nintendo to fail so that they can play Mario/etc on other platforms. (It isn't exactly subtle.)

..

But over the past decade, my stance regarding third parties on Nintendo platforms has been: I'l believe it when I see it.

People want games to be released on the platform they own. Shocking.
I get that it can be annoying. But look at the Sims 4 for instance. That game does not need to be played on the big TV to be enjoeyd. On the contrary. And some people express that wish.

I think it'd be sort of weird to have bought a Switch with the idea that it was just going to slot in next to the other three big platforms and have a comparable library.

I do agree that it kind of goes without saying that more games coming to more platforms is good. Comments like "would be a perfect game for the Switch" are essentially pointless because there is nothing that fundamentally different about the Switch than there is about any console in terms of layout and features - only its portability is unique and that doesn't do anything to alter the content.

I mean, you could literally take any PS4 or Xbox One game and say "oh yeah this would be perfect on the Switch!" and there's not really anything anyone could say that would prove otherwise.

But we know damn well that most multiplatform games are not coming to the system, as was the case with the 3DS and as was the case with the Wii U.

I mean a few years ago like every single new game that got announced would have a slew of comments that were just "Wii U?" , "C'mon Wii U!" , "Chances of Wii U port?" , "Wii U announcement incoming?" or something to that effect and it's kind of happening again. I mean it sounds like a shit thing to say but I wish people that bought the Switch would do so to enjoy its current and near-future content and not so that they can vainly hope that every new AAA game is going to somehow wind up on it, while sharing their unsolicited fantasies with the rest of us.

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."
Considering how out of touch people are in regards to specs and what the specs mean (or do in games), you are going to get a lot of people asking for games that simply don't work on 4 gb of ram. It is annoying though.

What annoys me is seeing a bunch of posts going "inb4 switch port begging" or complaining about it. Way more frequently than actual port begging.

I think there is always a slim hope that people have that the a Nintendo console will have equal footing on third-party support. Unfortunately I don't think we'll get that for at least for a majority of the western third parties and the big major games from Japanese developers.

I think most people on this form know what to expect honestly it's just there's that "one" that hasn't been announced or have a clear sight of being on the Switch that there might be a change for it.

Also plus....you know....the Switch is new and stuff.

REZ for Switch when?

But seriously you should be more concerned about why so many threads read like they came from Gamefaqs, even this one.

Difference now is you want everything on the go.

Number 1 reason for switch port-begging

a Friend of mine wants to play the later final fantasy games (10 and 12 remasters and 15) but that's just not gonna happen cause he's always moving around and sitting in front of his TV for hours at night is just unrealistic.

of course he port-begs.

Port begging is discouraged because it derails the topic. It's just annoying. But if someone personally wants every game possible on Switch I don't see the problem. Just don't shit up dedicated threads with port begging. Don't be annoying.

Also what you are doing is annoying too. No one needs you to lecture them about expectations.

I feel like the Nintendo faithful know this song and dance far too well but it's the lapsed Nintendo fan and newcomers that need to be educated.

Folks that have been with Nintendo for multiple consoles now know the routine in regards to third party software and most have accepted the reality of the situation.

But folks that haven't had a piece of Nintendo hardware since the SNES or folks new to Nintendo don't realize that third party software just isn't a thing that happens for Nintendo for a multitude of reasons.

Starting said portbegging with "this would be perfect on the Switch..." is irritating to me. That line is used for literally every game already released and yet to be released.

I have a Switch and if a game comes, it comes.

Honestly, people showing interest in certain games helps bring ports to a platform. I think some of you griping about port begging are being a little dramatic.

I seriously don't get why people port beg when

1) It's bannable
2) It literally doesn't make a difference
3) Worrying about something you can't control objectively makes your life worse
4) It makes you look silly

Like what's the point, lmao

You literally just admitted you only enter Switch threads. That's why you don't see this. It's everywhere lol.

Personally, I'm not sure who the problem is. Nintendo for being 3rd party unfriendly or the gamers who fall for the 3rd party lines every Nintendo console.

I just love how every single announcement thread is immediately derailed by Switch port begging. It's great. Just great.

People have a system
People like games
People want games they like on system they like

It's not exclusive to Nintendo yo

This. Only reason I want more Switch versions is because of the convenience of portability.

I didn't care whether or not the WiiU got 3rd party support outside of whatever exclusives Nintendo landed as I'd rather play on my PC than a non-portable console.

Everybody assume that Switch is the ideal "complimentary console", but for many people, including me, it isn't. I'm a busy man, I can't stay at home and game for long hours in front of the TV and that's why I want to go Switch exclusive in the future. But that's not happening anytime soon, because Switch isn't getting 3rd party games and I don't like the first party output. That leaves me without any choice but try hard to create free time at home to play PS4.

There are too demanding games coming to PS4 these days and it does not make any sense at all. FF12 is a 80 hour something game and it's pretty much impossible for me to beat it in one year. Same goes for XCOM 2, a game I wanted to try but I can't simply start it on PS4. Switch is a godsend device for such games but It seems majority of people want to game at home. Maybe I could quit my job?

I want games to come to the new system i own. if an obvious game doesnt make it or a publisher ask for demand i'll speak up.
Disney afternoon and DBfighterz
Most people like the aspect of being able the bring there console games with them on the go, god forbid they ask for big games to do this for.

Also the old saying ask and you shall receive. we wont get shit if we dont express our want for such a product.

P.S its more annoying asking for an exclusive made for a platform to be multiplate then a multiplate game skipping a major system and asking why its not on that system as well.

When a new game is announced and they announce the platforms its releasing on, which sometimes doesn't include the Switch, it happens a LOT.

If someone wants the game on Switch then Facebook/Twitter is the best course of action, not Neogaf where it's against the TOS.

How 'bout this. Let's compromise, GAF.

If people stop begging Nintendo to go third party and release their games on other consoles

The Switch port begging will cease

Oh, wouldn't that be nice.

Got any examples? Genuinly curious how bad it is, since the threads I follow blow up the other way, so I just get annoyed by all the "stupid Switch port beggers". I have never port begged and don't derail the thread plz! Haha.
