For Left 4 Dead fans, what's new?

I find myself in an odd position. Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 are two of my most favorite games. The storytelling, the atmosphere, the gunplay, all are all very compelling to me. I love going through these terrific horror levels, from point A through point B, and blasting zombies.

It seems like there aren't a lot of similar options out there these days, and I know Valve ain't coming to the rescue. You've got games like Killing Floor 2 which are ostensibly the same; they've got a multiplayer focus with a horror setting, but it's wave-based. To me that takes away maybe my favorite aspect of the series which is travelling from location to location, Safe house to Safe house.

I'm not entirely sure if maybe Fortnight might be what I'm looking for. From the cinematic trailers it looks amazing, but watching the gameplay it looks very different with its focus on base building and resource gathering. The cinematic trailer really stung when I watched it because I so wanted to be with these teammates going through this town, flooded with the walking dead, rescuing people. What the vids I've seen seem to show, sadly, is Minecraft with hordes of zombies.

Maybe I'm wrong, though. I'd love to be. Hell, I'd buy it tonight if it turned out I was. I really don't care for the "Build a position up, horde mode" kinda dealie though.

Is there anything out there for those left hungry for a new L4D? PC maybe? Ideally on PS4 but, at this point, I'm not picky.

I miss the game like hell, and know there's more content for L4D out there than any one human could ever consume. I just want something out there that will be a balm to this aching void of L4D 3.

Hell, some of my favorite gaming memories are putting on a podcast and playing L4D single player. I've put hundreds of hours into the series both single player and with my kids, but maybe only 10 online.

Check out Warhammer: Vermintide, perhaps? It's the only other game I can think of that's like L4D2. It's got a lot stronger focus on melee though.

It's possible that the new Nazi Zombies in COD: WW2 will scratch that itch. But we haven't seen any gameplay yet, so it's anybody's guess.

There's Warhammer: Vermintide which is straight-up Left 4 Dead in different times by devs that made Left 4 Dead. Plus there's loot.

It's on all major platforms so you're good.

I won it on XB1 myself, just need to find the time to give it a go.

Edit: Damn, beaten a bunch of times.

I'm with you. Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 are #1 and #2 on my top played Steam games. They're so much fun with friends. The wait for a true successor continues.

It's not quite the same and killing rats get a little old, but I had a blast playing Vermintide and no one has done a Left 4 Dead game as well since (not like there have been a lot of them, though).

Still waiting for L4D3.
I thought L4D2 sold and was received pretty well, the community is still sort of active and I can find active games even now, not sure why Valve didn't bother with a follow up.

Kicking myself now, hearing that game is a similar style and even made by some of the same team?! I've seen it on sale a thousand times and never even gave it a look!

I always wanted Left 4 Dead to have perhaps 2-3 mid-sized cities with outskirts, etc. covering a few different environment and climate types, and then just sort of procedurally generate missions and "campaigns" by matching up landmarks and tossing in a few randomly-generated events.

Like: "You start at <THE LIBRARY>, you hear there's an evac chopper on the roof of <A CAR DEALERSHIP>. <MAIN STREET> is blocked by <BURNING TRAFFIC DEBRIS>. There is a <HORDE> making its way <WEST> from <THE SUPERMARKET>. Military personnel are <SHOOTING SURVIVORS>.

And so on.

I am absolutely addicted to Fortnite. It needs a lot of work in the UI department but it is virtual crack to me.

Much different game than Left 4 Dead though. So it's hard to recommend to you if that's what you are looking for.

Payday was my L4D replacement, but I don't have a PC, and even if I did, I don't know that I would support the sequel.

Killing Floor 2 is my replacement for now, and it's decent. Nothing spectacular though. Might just try to fire up PD1, that was the shit.

I feel like L4D3 is still in development, but the VR push might've seen a lot of people moving around to support that.

They've always mentioned in interviews that Valve staff move around when games are coming out.

And they've also mentioned they have a few VR games coming, so maybe L4D3 will have a VR option.

is L4D2 dead on PC? I was thinking the other day going back to play a few rounds.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Extinction mode is very much like L4D in many ways. Unfortunately, if you want all 5 maps, it also requires buying all the DLC/Season Pass, since the base game only comes with 1 Extinction map.

It's a 4 player co-op mode where it always has a distinct end unlike the wave based Zombies mode of other CoD games. It has its own progression and rank up system separate from the competitive MP and you can even prestige when you reach max rank. There are 4 distinct character classes with their own unique abilities and passive traits. You earn upgrades and power-ups over the course of a game, while also earning new unlocks as you rank up. There are even multiple difficulty modes. It's surprisingly in-depth and is the most fun co-op mode that a CoD game has ever had.

Not at all, the game is quite active to this day and there are tons of Steam Workshop content the community has created to continue extending the life of it.

Last year I was absolutely sure 2017 was going to be the year they at least announce L4D3.
Now that we're 7 months in and their focus seems to have shifted to VR, my hope has dwindled.

I've tried CoD zombies a few times but, maybe I'm dumb, couldn't really figure out what the hell was going on. The "Defend a point against waves" thing doesn't strike me.

If the new one's mode were linear progress through a level I'd be there day one.

Nothing yet. I've moved on to trying other stuff. Enjoyed Overwatch quite a bit. I'm there day one when L4D3 hits, but it could take years. I don't enjoy any other similar game. Tried Killing Floor and it just isn't the same.

Vermintide is what you are looking for, but from the beta I didn't find it as good.

But don't for for Fortnite waiting for a L4D clone, the game is good, but quite different.

Man what I would do for L4D3... such a goddamn shame what happened with Valve.

I mean it doesn't have zombies, but I've always thought of the Payday series as a lot like L4D in structure. You move through replayable missions with slight randomization, moving from point A to B and completing map specific tasks along the way, and fighting off waves made up of a mix of grunts and special enemies.

Isn't Vermintide kind of a bad recommendation for new players at this point in the games life though? People mainly just do nightmare runs for loot and it's 50/50 if you find someone willing to deal with new players.

The whole point of L4D was everyone is on the same footing and the only thing that helps is skill/knowledge.

I guess Valve just doesn't do part 3 of anything

jesus, who's even still playing? Is it a bunch of newbs?

Because otherwise they'd have to have played every level like 1000 times each.

And what is the problem with that? It's just the same structure as any multi-player beatem up and shooter in the past.

I am still playing it from time to time.

I play it when my internet service is down.

I kinda want more mod support for it, like a hunger meter or a thirst meter

gameplay add-ons to make it more survival-y.
