This one i still dont QUITE get the hate. A lot of sci fi generally takes an idea, good or bad, and stretches ot to the extreme. Dunno why extreme progressivism should be off the plate. Demolition Man did a similiar thing in the 90s. Unless there is some aspect to this im missing havent followed it too much.

do you think the mods change the title of the thread to read "(Milkshake Duck incarnate)" for no specific reason? i'll even do the legwork for you, enjoy. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1389528

Because exactly they're a "soft boy" who can use that to their advantage. Soft boy doesn't denote a man's morality. Just like how "nice guy" was dismantled to be anything but, so the same will happen to "soft boy".

Soft boy culture...? Isn't it just a kind of in joke?

Nick Robertson.

I mean goddammit I just followed him on Twitter a few months ago after ages of seeing his stuff being retweeted again and again... and then this happens. Fuck.

I guess the guy might be a dick, but I don't think the topic is a bad one for a game..... did he have some horrid tweets or something? Outside of the context of the guy being a jerk I think its a neat concept for a scifi game

Yes, horrid tweets and the whole thing. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.po...0174/the-last-night-twitter-history-gamergate

Also yeah the game looks cool as shit and challenges a common imagined panacea right now and could be interesting. But in his context it cannot get a pass.

I'd take what Mike and rich say as just give no fucks older man from Central US.

Theyre just massive older trolls who likely believe these things aren't bad to say and are all around in a political spectrum. They might not be gaf friendly but at least to the general internet standard they aren't alt right or extremely offensive, just hack fraud assholes.

Oh sure. I don't think it comes from a place of hate for these two, and they seem reasonably self-aware and capable of introspection.

Just saying that Rich seems the most likely to let a minor gaffe snowball out of control out of pride and stubbornness.

Edit: Just remembered where I heard the term "soft boy" before. All the way back in some 2005 Achewood strips.

It was less "what if socialism won" and more "giving women equal rights & treatment would lead to dystopia" that people had a problem with.

Adam Baldwin. Adored him in Firefly. Then he got weird.

This one. I didn't like him as a person 3 years ago, but now I don't really want to even rewatch Firefly.

Calling Amir0x a milkshake duck is a bit of a stretch. Nobody expected him to be pedophile obviously, but I don't recall him having that good of a reputation beforehand.

Yeah. He was the first person I ever put on ignore on this forum because he was kind of a dick. I don't remember anyone being a fan of his.

I think this has happened with most of the heroes I had growing up. There's a good reason the old adage warns against meeting your heroes.

Billy Corgan. I mean, his ego made him a joke and his talent ran out over a decade ago, but now he's slid into angry old shitball right-wing politics.

Doug TenNapel, yeah, but I've known about that one for a long time, too.

Adam Carolla's descent hurt. Dr. Drew's hurt more.

Metallica, when they decided to make you and me villains for sharing mp3s.

Thurston Moore cheated on Kim Gordon and broke up Sonic Youth.

Also, the internet got wise on softboys a while ago. At least, folks on Twitter and Tumblr did.

I guess I would say peyton manning.

He started doing those ads with papa john who is not a good guy. Plus apparently he has went golfing with trump and supports him. I loved warching him as a qb and thought he always seemed really cool, plus the funny commercials.

Brady too of course. Turns out rich white guys who play football are still just as likely to be out of touch far right pricks as rich white guys who don't play football.

Manning's had that undercurrent for most of his career though, going back to the incident with the female trainer at Tennessee. He's the kind of entitled white boy that doesn't get propped up so much anymore.

Echoing Jontron. I don't get too gut punched about this stuff but damn. No more of his videos.

Only thing that would be worse is if Vinesauce's Vinny/Joel suddenly came out like that.

Mike has made fun of trump a lot openly, so it seems like that is safe.

I mean, he non-sarcastically used Hillary Clinton as an example of a role model for young girls during the Half in the Bag for Wonder Woman.

I'm pretty sure they're safe. They don't ever gay bash, and I don't think they've ever said anything remotely transphobic.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. The pro-abortion people is convinced that their position is the one rooted in facts and "human rights", and the anti-abortion side is convinced that their position is the one rooted in facts and "human rights". Each sees the other as trying to deny human beings their basic rights. And they're going to fight to preserve and advance human rights, as they understand them, until the cows come home.

The OP's example of the Last Night involved a debate around "modern feminism" and whether it's good or bad, or whether it has negative potential. As you might imagine, anti-abortion people do not see eye-to-eye with certain factions within feminism that are pro-abortion to the point of basing their identity around it and excluding anyone who isn't like-minded. If you say, "modern feminism" = "pro-abortion", then I'd say a lot of anti-abortion people would view "modern feminism" as "evil", or at least complicit in bad things. But this is very complicated. Because both sides see themselves as the good guys and both sides have pretty decent arguments at the end of the day.

Loooooooool nope

There is nothing decent about trying to control women by restricting their body autonomy. Nothing.

Get that both sides shit the fuck out of here.

There's been a few milkshake duck moments for me lately:

- Laci Green - I loved her work on feminism and her critques were interesting. But as soon as she got "red-pilled" I just saw her betraying her ideals for the sake of support from the community that ripped into her for years. Damned shame.

- Adam Baldwin. I'm amazed he was able to stomach starring in Firefly and getting beaten up by Summer Glau on several occassions. Also he coined the GamerGate name despite not giving a damn about videogames.

- Jon Voight.

- Bruce Willis.

That's been the most recent ones I can remember, sadly there's probably more out there.

Fuck man I don't want to even think about this.

Joel makes 'attack helicopter' jokes sometimes, and that made me have to stop watching his stuff. :/ Trivialising trans people isn't funny, even if he doesn't realise where the 'I identify as an attack helicopter/check your privilege, cis scum' stuff originated (4chan). So yeah, Milkshake Duck. Vinny's OK though, I think.

God help me if James Rolfe turns out to be a bigot.

How so? They praised wonder woman just on the basis alone for what it meant for girls having a hero to their own.

I'm not sure it was non-ironic. In 2:30~3:21 of the review, it was a back hand jab directed at requests for positive female representation in comic book movies.

And there's Star Wars: TFA

Several members of the Foo Fighters (I don't think Grohl is one of them) are not only anti-vaxxers, but they believe this idiotic myth that HIV and AIDS somehow aren't linked.

Ezra Pound was sort of the original milkshake duck. One of the more famous poets of the first half of the 20th century, then became a massive proponent of fascism and antisemite and ended up being locked up in a mental institution for 13 years after the war was over for having actively undertaken anti-U.S. government measures in Europe during the war.

Charles Lindbergh if we want to dig into that era, same thing. Inspired a generation to take to the skies and would have gone down as one of the American heroes of the 20th century, spoken in the same breath as Earhart, Armstrong, and Aldrin, then some hinky stuff happens with his baby and then he decides "hey, why not Fascism?"

Maybe, but if it was used ironically she would have been the final name in the list. Instead the final name was Cleopatra. I think it might have been just a random list, but it seemed pretty sincere.

Rolf Harris, an Australian entertainer who was very popular here in the UK, turned out to be a paedophile and was jailed.

As a kid I loved his music and also his time presenting Animal Hospital. Really shocked me when the allegations came out.

Chris Benoit was probably my favorite wrestler growing up, since his early WCW days. I remember us all going nuts when he won the Royal Rumble and then won the belt at Wrestlemania. Only a few years later, he murders his wife and son and then hung himself. Such a tragedy and it still makes me sick to my stomach even thinking about it.

Other ones that stand out for me include Michael Richards (I'm a huge Seinfeld fan), John Edwards (went and saw him speak on campus in 2004) and Billy Corgan (Pumpkins are my favorite band, but he's always been an asshole and in recent years, has proven to also be a crazy person).

I had a friend once that defended the Confederacy. Believed in a lot of white-washed bullshit about how the Civil War started only because the South was mad about tariffs. Literally made a false equivalency between how living under the institutionalized racism in Free states was just as bad as being a literal slave in the South.

I called her out on it publicly and cut her out of my life. My actions allowed other people to come forward to speak about a bunch of other terrible stuff that she's said and done.

She and her boyfriend are real pieces of shit and continue to harass a friend of mine.

And he directed Letters from Iwo Jima, Invictus and Gran Torino, so I'd say you could rest easy on any concerns about his identity politics.

At least... that's what I like to tell myself to make me sleep better.

I wouldn't include Gran Torino in this list. :(

Vang, who played Thao in the film, said he and the other Hmong actors were treated unfairly. Eastwood would not allow them to tweak their lines (even though he claimed that he did allow them to when asked in interviews following the release of the movie) and would not give them any tips on character building.

The actors felt degraded when they were told to ”make noise" by rambling words in their language. The Hmong actors were also left out by their fellow cast members who were white.

The cast members excluded them from cast events because they immediately assumed that Hmong actors were exactly like their character counterparts—unable to speak English clearly or to understand anything ”American."

Probably Adam Carolla. I grew up listening to Loveline so him becoming a right wing blowhard sucked.

Yeah, this to me plus some of his fellow podcasters were on the Dump train and then he won, I have still not listened to any of them, post election. Carolla since he ranted on safe spaces.

Also, James Woods.

I actually stopped listening to Carolla since Trump won too.

Angry white guy railing on PC culture has become ascendant in culture. I don't need to listen to a podcast of it anymore.

Jon Tron was the most recent one for me.

I hadn't watched any of his videos for a long time, but I thought he was hilarious when he was on GameGrumps and his standalone videos were always pretty great too. But when he had his meltdown... Damn, that just sucked.

I guess one of the first ones I experienced was Lance Armstrong.

When I was younger I thought he had such an inspirational story, but finding out he was cheating and lying about it for so long was a bummer. Granted he did still survive cancer and I still think you need to be a great athlete even with juicing to do well, but lying about it for so long was the real problem for me.

Tom Cruise being a Scientologist I was put off of him for quite a while, but I got over it eventually. He can be a part of whatever crazy cult he wants to be in as long as he's not hurting other people, and since his his wife at the time seems to be out of it now, I don't see much problem with him being duped into such a dumb religion.

Can you clarify Zakir Naik? My dad watches him a lot. I know he's been banned from certain countries but my dad made it sound like he wasn't at fault - what's the truth here?

I would say the whole Last Night Soret bit was my most recent Milkshake Duck... or maybe Anchor Steam selling to Sapporo, if that counts. However, the revelations in this thread alone are utterly depressing in their volume.

Yea, I've avoided Joel's stuff for some time mostly because it's not super entertaining to me anymore. It's a shame he can't escape the garbage 4chan shit.

Hopefully Vinny stays away from it though. I watch his stuff daily.

Just thought of a good one - Dr. Seuss. He cheated on his cancer-ridden wife who already had a history of mental illness and depression until she eventually killed herself. Bad form, Ted.

I mean, he non-sarcastically used Hillary Clinton as an example of a role model for young girls during the Half in the Bag for Wonder Woman.

I'm pretty sure they're safe. They don't ever gay bash, and I don't think they've ever said anything remotely transphobic.
They specifically have a problem with "gay panic" jokes and praised Spider-Man Homecoming for having a scene with Peter in his underwear while hanging out with Ned, and not playing up Aunt May's reaction or anything.

You might want to watch Going Clear if you think he hasn't hurt people while being a figurehead of Scientology.

You know, this is me as well. All my favourite YouTube channels these days are the thoughtful personalities who are making video essays from the most mundane to the most compelling subjects out there. Extra Creditz, Lindsey Ellis, Nerdwriter, kaptiankristian, Idea Channel, Folding Ideas, Arlo, Hbomberguy, Errant Signal, Ethos, CGPGrey, Noah Cadwell-Gervais, MrBTounge, and Innuendo Studios.

All those channels are great. I mostly moved on from all those hot take gamer guy comedic channels a long time ago but still like the occasional chill LP group like Vinesauce and SBFP.

MrBtounge has a good video in diversity and Witcher 3 and Bloodborne. Granted all his videos are pretty thoughtful.
