Anyone else think Star Wars fanatics that get upset by special editions are crazy?

I mean, is George Lucas adding some scenes/CGI really something to be upset by?

I have 1-6 on Blu-ray and I couldn't give a fuck less about that shit.

Star Wars obsession in general seems insane to me.

Even man that made all this shit moved on. Do the same. Find a job. Hit the gym. Do something with your lives instead of obsessing whether Zippalon Diago was in that one shot on Bespin or not.

its obnoxious, im not the biggest star wars fan but its weird how they cant just give us the old ones too

Yub Nub sucks, every other change is pretty dumb though and it's incredibly ironic how George Lucas ended up dramatically changing films (some of which weren't even his) despite his outspoken views against the alteration of films and the importance of creator's intent.

People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society. The preservation of our cultural heritage may not seem to be as politically sensitive an issue as ”when life begins" or ”when it should be appropriately terminated," but it is important because it goes to the heart of what sets mankind apart. Creative expression is at the core of our humanness. Art is a distinctly human endeavor. We must have respect for it if we are to have any respect for the human race.

Wouldn't go so crazy if they weren't such dumbass changes.

Young ghost Anakin?

Prequel Jango dub on Boba Fett?

Greedo shooting first?

People aren't irritated because they fixed the spaceship special effects or the CGI establishing shots. That's fine, that's fixing what's broken. It's the stuff George Lucas tried to fix that wasn't broken that bothers us.

Yes. My only complaints are the unneeded CGI in Mos Eisley in A New Hope, Darth Vader's NOOOOOOO in Return of the Jedi, and there was one more but I forgot.

I'm perfectly okay with everything else.

BUT, they should have the option to choose between original release and updated release. That's something that I want to have.

i don't even care about star wars anymore but creators erasing the original versions of films is just real fuckin obnoxious in general

Considering the refusal to put out a good remaster of the original trilogy without the alterations, not really since most of the changes were for the worst.

Most of the changes are good (effects fixes), some are very questionable (Greedo, Jedi Rocks, the pointless scenes at the end of ESB of Vader going back to his ship), the only one that actually makes me upset is Vader's "Nooooo" that got added to the RotJ Blu-Ray purely as one last "fuck you" to the fans.

Okay it was probably because of a desire to have the end of RotS "rhyme" with the end of RotJ but it's fucking awful and should be destroyed.

Overly upset? Sure, absolutely. Star Wars fans take most everything too far. But that doesn't mean most of the changes in the newest editions are pretty cheesy and bad. Basically the only good thing that was changed was Yub Nub -> Victory Celebration, and some VFX improved.

I guess I can see wanting the original versions but I don't understand how some people get so upset about Lucas changing them.

Was getting caught part of your plan?
I can totally understand the sentiment of wanting to preserve the original form of an artwork, especially with something as huge of a cultural impact and revolutionary as Star Wars.

That said, I've never understood people bursting veins over the special editions either. There are some dumb decisions in there, yes, but not big enough get angry at someone whose first experience with the movies were those editions.

Because, quite frankly, those same people wouldn't have given two shits about it anyway.

Bad taste confirmed? The changes are legit terrible. They drastically interfere with the tone of the films. It's pretty easy to see why people get upset.

Star Trek thread is that way.

Sweet, I love cash. Never thought of that.

Will I have to shower though?

The entrance to Mos Eisley is a perfect example of how he shat on his own movie.

Is it too much to ask for a cleaned up version without the cheap looking CG? Let the movie rest in time, complete with its era of special effects.

It's all about preservation and ability to buy the theatrical cuts of the films. I think it's absolutely valid and it's kind of disgusting Lucasfilm and Disney won't put out a set for those cuts.

The problem isn't that Lucas changed them.

Its that Lucas changed and also REFUSES to release the original versions in any way save a half-assed laserdisc transfers over ten years ago.

If he did that, not one would care.

Nah. It turns something I'm fundamentally interested in (retro 70s/80s sci-fi) into something I'm not (a late 90s/2000s kids CGI cartoon).

Basically it takes something like Alien/Blade Runner and turns it into... a Star Wars prequel.

Nah. A few are legit terrible, but I will never go back to transparent snowspeeder cockpits and boring closed-off Bespin. More of the changes are positive fixes than shitty content alterations. It's just the latter that stick out more.

OK but why don't you like that though? Is there any difference between good movies that work because they're well made and bad movies that don't work because they're full of lame crap and bad CG? Like honestly.

I can get behind number of the more inconspicuous Special Edition changes, but never the awful Blu-ray hitjob.

I don't consider myself a Star Wars fan, however I do insist on watching the versions of the films that I grew up with whenever I feel the need to rekindle that feeling of nostalgia. The special editions were nice to see in theaters, but I have no desire to revisit them since they don't spark up those same sentiments.

Teach the controversy. Both sides.

Why didn't they at least add in a non-evil looking version of Anakin into the ghost scene? That would have actually been a pretty cool change if it wasn't executed so poorly.

We have a thread discussing the coloring timing of the new release of Terminator 2, but Star Wars fans are out of control for not liking the special editions.

I'll never understand the double standard.
