What platform/platforms have y'all played The Evil Within on?

I meant to reply to these sooner, but I think it was open in a different tab of my web browser, and I forgot which one that was haha.

Played it on PC on a 21:9 screen. I'm not 100% if the game supported 21:9 on release or if I used a patch for it.

You most likely used a patch...I doubt the game, especially at release, would support 21:9...could be wrong though. Speaking of 21:9...how do you feel that is? Is it more...widescreen...than the average PC monitor?

Ps4 - liked but quit after a few hours because of the of the AWFUL performance. Unplayable imo

Have a gtx1070 so i am thinking about getting the steam version since i love all of mikamis old games

Aah...sorry to hear the PS4 technical issues got to you.

Glad though you still like the game enough to consider the PC version :]

Just so you know...hmmm...as a fan of Mikami stuff, I felt that the Mikami "presence" in this game...is reduced. I feel that he wasn't as hands-on on the experience, and I think he even admitted so in some interview after TEW's release. That being said, I feel it's still there, to a degree...I think you'll know what I mean if you go from TEW from say RE5 and/or RE6. I feel there's at least SOME good ol' Mikami magic in there...so yea, my advice is to temper your expectations a bit for the Mikami factor when you get around to playing TEW, if you do end up getting PC ver.

I played about an hour or two on PS4 but quit, partly because it ran like shit but mainly because the game itself is just awful.

Like, it's a really really poor piece of software.

Avoid.

The game being awful sounds to me like your opinion!

I consider it a flawed gem/masterpiece personally, and that it's still worth purchasing in spite of what I consider it's flaws

Xbox One because I was visiting my brother and he has it. I only got up to chapter 4 due to a lack of time.

I bought the PS4 version on a sale recently and it's fairly high up on my list of games to play.

Aah...well, I hope you enjoy the game!

Only on PC everything maxed, it was beautiful and ran at smooth 60 FPS all the time.

Bought it at launch, never had issues.

Cool! Glad you had a great experience with PC version, especially at launch!

Only Xbox One, but I thought it was fine. Minor hitches here and there but nothing that I felt got in the way of combat or, well, enjoying the game.

I mean he said he played an hour, that's like half the tutorial at best.

I played it on PC. It had some major issues when I first played it including crashes that meant I couldn't get past chapter 3. However a couple of patches down the line the game ran well enough for me to enjoy it and it became one of my favourite games. It's still in my top ten for this gen.

Cool cool I feel!

Hmm...that could be true. Yea, that section of the game I feel doesn't really represent the rest of the game that well...even if it's moody in it's own way.

Played it on all platforms. Ha.

No way. Really?! That'd be super cool to me...and yet, it sounds highly unlikely to me somehow.

Played it on PS3 at launch, game was a mess tech-wise. Had something like 100% teared frames when ever an intractable light source was close by on screen. I still loved the game, but holly shit I doubt I would have continued playing if the entirety of the game was similar to the first few areas, where the tearing problem was at its worse.

I actually remember pausing the game and jumping online to ask how prevalent the tearing issue throughout the game. I honestly thought about trying to return the game and waiting until I had a PS4 or a good enough PC, but people were complaining about how bad it was on those too at the time, so I just gave in and continued playing. Great game, but not without its faults(even outside tech stuff).

I enjoy what I played of it, though admittedly I wish the rest of the game was closer in atmosphere and tone to the tutorial level. Though from what I've heard from one of my friends, it sounds like the game has a lot of variety in that regard, so I'm excited to see what they do with the rest of the game.

Cool! Glad you had a great experience with PC version, especially at launch!

Granted that I also had a fairly new PC at that point with GTX970, i5-4690K and lots of RAM. But then again my brother managed to run it at 30 FPS on a Lenovo y600 (or what was that gaming laptop at that time with double GTX660m or something), offering more steady experience than the console versions at that point.

That sucks :/ Glad for you at least, the patches made the game more playable for you and that it's in your top 10 this gen!

Yea...the PS3 version sounds horrible to me haha.

Glad you were still able to enjoy the game in spite of it's technical issues!

Yea...totally agree with this opinion of yours:

Great game, but not without its faults(even outside tech stuff)

Yeah have it on pc, xbox one, and ps4. Also tried out ps3 and 360 versions. I was super into it.

Wow...sounds like alot of dedication to it haha. Which version/versions do you prefer, and optionally, why?

I'd say your friend is right...I feel the game is indeed full of variety in many ways...hopefully, you find some sections/chapters to your tastes as well, even if they're different from the tutorial section you like a lot!

Aah...yea, I'd definitely agree that the PC version, even at launch, provided a more steady experience than the console versions at that point, still does I think

I won a PC copy on GAF a few months ago and it seems like a pretty good version, was able to mod the FOV to be a bit higher and turn those bars off.

Honestly no major issues between pc, xbox, and ps4. Bumps here and there in performance across the board but I have no issues. Older gen versions were a bit rougher!

Cool! Do you know if by any chance, the FOV mod still works with the current PC version?

Cool cool how were able to enjoy TEW as a "proper" sequel/spiritual successor to RE4 in spite of the PS3 performance!

What's odd to me is that some things felt EXTREMELY refined/streamlined to me like the inventory for example, and yet I consider many things in that game to feel janky-ish, like it was developed by a brand new dev. team with no prior experience with other developed titles (that very well might be the case w/ Tango Gameworks, with only a few key staff like Mikami, Katakani, and a few others being from the old Capcom Prod. Studio 4 while most of the team was brand new otherwise)

Add another one to the list of Xbox One TEW players! I find it cool that you liked it alot, even w/ black bars (what I personally consider the superior experience :p) Glad you're anticipating 2 alot...I WANT to be more hyped for 2, but gonna be more cautious this time around with TEW franchise...I felt I was too hyped for the 1st one, and although I still like the game and consider it a flawed masterpiece, I wouldn't be lying if I typout that the overhype still makes me view some aspects of the game more negatively than if I wasn't as hyped for it I guess

Totally agree
Hyped for the sequel!

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
PS4 Pro with Boost mode. One level early in still had some performance issues, but the bulk of the game ran much improved over the shoddy performance on a vanilla PS4.

Xbox 360, represent. Then I double-dipped on PS4. Interestingly, it felt better to play on 360: less glitches and hard drops I thought

Gonna do a run with Boost Mode soon

Played it on pc

Don't remember any pressing issues the game had.

Neat!

None at the moment

Well, what are you waiting for?

Totally agree

Aah...glad to know that the PS4 Pro w/ Boost mode aids that game!

PC at launch. Played with a pad because the game felt horrendously choppy with a mouse and locked 30 fps. Great game, amazing aesthetics. The sequel loses too much of the grit with a cleaner look, IMO

From what I can glean w/ your choice of avatar, seems like you're big on Mikami?

I tried the M&K control scheme I think a few times...wasn't too bad in my experience. I kind of like the way the HUD is laid out when using M&K controls...it's different from when using controllers, and I find it cool in it's own way. Still prefer the game with controllers though

I think I get what you typed out...yea, the 1st game had this grimy, dirty look to it imo, which I find greatly fitting a survival horror game.

To be fair though, we've seen so little of TEW2 stuff gameplay wise and graphically so far...maybe later areas of the game can perhaps capture the dirty, grimy look of the 1st game...who knows!

PS4, didn't have any outstanding issue as other people

Aah...glad you were able to enjoy PS4 version!

This is so off topic, but it's been bugging me for some time...how can I change my GAF "status" from "Member" to something custom, like I've seen several members do on here already? As in, having a custom message, sometimes with a URL in it, in place of the standard "Member" label?

I can't imagine myself playing this game at 30 FPS, with spotty performance, black bars and a narrow FOV, so I went with the PC version.

It was all for nothing, since I ended up strongly disliking the game. This was before I had played RE4, so in retrospect I see why I didn't like TEW.

I see...did Steam at the time at least, have refunds in place? Maybe you could've refunded it, if you played less than 2 hrs of it...unless you played more than that and you still didn't like it

I think though that one can appreciate The Evil Within on it's own, without have playing RE4 or any previous survival horrors/action horrors tbh...the many arguments on RE4 vs. TEW I think prove that point...IIRC, many who love RE4 were dissapointed with TEW, and vice versa

Definitely. I'm sure it's fine with m&k after the performance patches, but I just stuck with pad even through the Kidman DLCs.

Of EW2's cleaner look, I'm not too down on it. As long as the challenge and tension is there it should be great.

PC. It ran like hot shit on my 780Ti but finally got it running smooth on my 1080 a year or so later (I don't know if there were any performance patches in the meantime, instinct says no).

Assuming you meant about being big on Mikami, cool!

Aah...I don't blame you in the slightest for sticking to controllers for TEW!

As I typed earlier I believe, we've seen so little of TEW2 in footage so far...so maybe not the entire game is like what you consider a cleaner look perhaps...good to know though that you're still willing to give TEW2 a chance as long as challenge and tension are still there though, in spite of the graphical style you dislike!

PC version and it ran pretty smooth. I was kind of expecting something worse, but I couldn't see any framedrops, tearing or whatever.

I played on PC.
I got very smooth 30fps (a couple of dips) downsampling from 1600p, and with the widescreen fix to have no blackbars and expanded FOV.

Cool! Do you know if by any chance, the FOV mod still works with the current PC version?

Can confirm.
Flawless Widescreen works perfectly, and i played it this July.

EDIT: Also, i played it with a gamepad just fine, but in a couple of instances i did use a mouse, just to line up some quick headshots better.

I have it on Pc, played with a few tweaks like no black borders and also with increased fov mod.

Plan on doing the same with the sequel.

Picked up the PC version a couple of weeks ago, but I'll wait for the Halloween season to play it.

Both, but stopped playing on the X1 while waiting on inevitable X upgrade.

To the above replies, cool!

Nice that your PC experience was great overall!

Where can I get the FOV mod from? A link would be appreciated

Yea, the M&K config ain't too shabby I feel, it has some advantages like your example w/ mouse being able to be used for easier headshots and such.

Bought it on PS4 because Bethesda's PC requirements were way too high and I thought I wouldn't be able to run it well enough. Turns out my PC at the time would be able to run it much better than the PS4 anyway, so I was stuck in framerate hell.

It's fine.

PS4. The performance was decidedly suboptimal but certainly not unplayable, and it looked good.

It's since been patched and most complaints about the performance are way overblown. The framerate is mostly okay now. The loading times are still kinda long, but at least the load screens are cool.

Never finished it on the ps4. Came to a point where i got stuck and put away for a while to pick it up later. This was 2 days after the release so its definetly time to pick this up after i finished Witcher 3's Blood and Wine DLC.
Time for a restart on Pro.

Played the game and all extra dlc on Xbox One. Absolutely fantastic game and can't wait for the sequel. The game tuns great and never ran into any issues.

I had a GTX 770 back then and the game ran like shit on my PC at release. Removed it from my precious HDD disk space. Couple of weeks ago I finally came to finish it—with a GTX 1070.

Controls are abysmal but I think it's the (bad) way the game is and not the PC version in particular since I've played it with controler.

Enjoyed it most of the time and still have the DLCs left.

PC, looked and ran fantastic. One of my favorite horror games. Though, I feel like getting it on ps4, just to have a physical version. :p

Can't wait for TEW2.

I bought it on PC on launch, then later on PS4 when I wanted to play it in my living room with someone else. I have a PS4 Pro so that might change things a bit, but PC version was fine, looked great as expected and ran great, best version of the game as per usual with multiplatform titles.

PS4 Pro version was completely servicable post patch that allows you to disable the forced aspect ratio. It doesn't chug very often and when it does it isn't too bad or noticeable to me. The graphics look close enough to the PC version on high. It's a valid version to play if it's the cheapest or only option. Can't speak for regular PS4 or XB1 though.
