Sonic Mania |OT| Dreams Come True

The logic is *ruby time distortion sound*
I don't get why they just didn't do that for the zones that don't have transitions considering they used it twice. Hell, it's the first transition you see in the entire game.

I am both relieved & annoyed at how easy this is.

....also how the hell did I never think into rolling into it!? I always tried to aim by hitting it while jumping. No wonder I was having issues. I'll have to test this on my Knuckles or Tails playthrough.

The more I play it, the more the weird lack of transitions are bringing me down. Surely it's not a glitch, but it's such a glaring oversight, it really feels like it would be.

Yea some stages having transitions and others not is really odd. It can't be an oversight so I'm assuming it's a design edition or lack of time perhaps?

I'm feeling like the missing transitions will be added in with a patch. Probably being overly optimistic, but it wouldn't surprise me if it just came down to a lack of time and the devs figured that they're something that can be chucked in after release.

I wasted 16 lives on the
Oil Ocean boss
with knuckles.

This one needs fixing.

-Knuckles can't jump from the oil onto the platform (he can but it seems to be random). If you're at the edge of the screen below it, the platform breaking will drag you down and kill you. This means he has to dodge lasers.
-The snake decides were to spawn AFTER the sound. Almost impossible to telegraph.
-The tentacles have crazy hitbox when they rise up, sometimes I'm like a body length out of reach, hit, kill by oil (also random).
-Rings are most likely all gone after one hit (random).
-Sometimes the tentacles rise up while the cannon is still shooting.

I'm all for a challenge, but there is too many random factors thrown in. Best way to beat it is go for a tentacle and hit it twice (if you're lucky, again hitboxes are weird) and move away. Takes ages though.

that puzzling face
we already have enough threads discussing the pronounciation of hydrocity

edit: err, wasn't wearing my glasses and thought this was a new thread

like seriously I can't get over how this track is absolutely layered with the kinds of little gamey flourishes that I usually only associate with Nintendo's and Sega's best OSTs

It really drives that Sega Saturn feel too. Actually I could see it in a new Shinobi game... hell it even reminds me of Astal for some reason or another.

EDIT: Is there a canon name for Tails powered up with the emeralds? Always called it Turbo Tails.

Aww that sucks, do you know about the level select code? You could still experience the rest of the levels with that.

Please can you tell me the code in spoilers.
The developers really should have thought about colourblind people for this bit.
It's ruined the game for me.

If I had one nitpick, I wish there was a results screen after beating a Blue Sphere level to show me how many I've completed & how many of each medal I have instead of exiting the game to go to the Extra section & counting.

But I'm also so used to having a result screen for Blue Sphere due to how much I've played S3&K, so maybe it just feels weird to me.

So was
Metal Sonic
shown in any of the promo material leading up to launch? Deciding whether to be angry at Kotaku or not.
Yeah, yeah, 2D Sonic game, a returning character, who cares. If you don't care, don't bother posting.

I don't think so? I mean, granted, when I heard Stardust Speedway was confirmed, it seemed like a given, but actual footage of that specific thing you're mention, no.

Thanks.
In that case I guess I can't be too mad if it was already implied. Really only have myself to blame for waiting so long to play through Sonic CD.
My heart just skipped a beat when I saw a gif of Metal Sonic on their front page.

So, uh, how do you get a perfect on the Blue Sphere stage
with only 4 blues
?
It's the easiest one to complete
, but I'm not sure how to perfect it.

Also, any general advice on the later Chaos Emerald stages? I'm stuck on the 5th one, and I'm not even getting close to the damn UFO.

If it makes you feel better, there's a neat little moment that Kotaku didn't spoil during the battle & was something I (& perhaps some of us) didn't see coming.

I can't wait to see what other little touches/cameos are included when I finish the game tomorrow.

I got the first three blue spheres then jumped through the bumpers to get the fourth from the other direction. It doesn't really feel like a correct solution and it took a few tries to get right, but I suppose it works so I can't complain.

Boy that final zone is some hot garbage that I hate and it's killing me because of how good most of the game is. The final third starting with
Oil Ocean
is where fun goes to die, huh.

I liked the whole game honestly! Final zone is long rather than difficult, time overs were the main problem for me first time through.

Keep at it, once you've done it once it becomes easier

I thought both LRZ and MMZ were fantastic. MMZ in particular is one of the best zones the game has to offer. I do agree that the final zone is weak though. Or to be more specific, just Act 2. Act 1 is pretty great IMO.

I must be in the minority because I really like TMZ.

I loved the return of the magnetic ball things that you can use to fling yourself around, the non-linear level design was pretty interesting and it wasn't particularly difficult once you get an understanding of it.

I was a little concerned about time out, being at about 8 minutes when I
finished the last of the four routes and went into the final boss
but thankfully
it does reset your timer for you for the final boss.

Lastly, regarding the boss of the zone itself
I think part of the reason it feels 'easy' is because you go into it with a supply of rings, unlike something like Sonic 2 where one hit during the bosses = death
.

The final zone had a bit too much insta-death by crushing for my liking. But I was always a bit shit at Sonic games, even when I was a kid

Overall a great game! Now I have to try and get all the Emeralds before starting a Knuckles run.

I bet they ran into time constraints. It'd be cool to see 'em patched in, but I'm not holding my breath.

Can someone tell me the game where each zone first appeared?

Green Hill - Sonic 1
Chemical Plant - Sonic 2
Studiopolis - NEW
Flying Battery - Sonic and Knuckles
Press Garden - NEW
Stardust Speedway - Sonic CD
Hydrocity - Sonic 3
Mirage Saloon - NEW
Oil Ocean - Sonic 2
Lava Reef - Sonic & Knuckles
Metallic Madness - Sonic CD
Titanic Monarch - NEW

Tecnically you've also got the first 2% of

Sonic OTs were never good anyway.

It's better than nothing.

Not seeing the difficult people are having with
Oil Ocean's
boss. Gonna record a quick fight of it later when I wake up.

I had a fair bit of trouble until I worked it out. As long as you don't get greedy and pace yourself, it's actually fairly simple

For me a problem came with the inconsistent death box on the platform that falls. Sometimes I had enough time to jump out onto a platform, other times I just instantly died when it went down.
