Samsung Pay is amazing.

Samsung kinda dropped the ball on advertising how magical this thing is. When you tell most people it works everywhere no matter what they just don't believe you unless you explain it has special technology in it.

Yeah agreed. I have friends with Samsung devices that are incredulous when I tell them how it works.

No idea what it's like in other countries but it feels so utterly and completely useless here in the US. Just a waste of everyone's time that despite the potential for better security doesn't actually end up reducing costs for anyone (in particular the end user).

Before the chip switchover here in Canada I'd have to change my bank card once or twice a year because I'd used it somewhere they found a skimmer. Since the switchover, several years back, I haven't had to change it once, aside from the time I switched it for a tap capable one a few years ago.

Part of the security of it is that if a POS terminal is chip capable, and if your card has a chip, the bank will decline your transaction if you try to use the mag stripe. You HAVE to use the chip, or tap to pay. I haven't seen a non-chip POS terminal, even in the boonies, in probably 4 years now. Crossing the border into the US is hilarious, it's like going back in time.

Oh, and none of this "chip and sign" nonsense, it's chip and PIN. Debit AND credit.

That's really strange then. Could be carrier dependant but when searching Samsung Pay, SamsungPay or SamsungPay UK (the name of the one I grabbed off the Samsung app store) nothing comes up but Android Pay on the Play store.
We haven't used magnetic strips in the UK for years now though so it's redundant here.

I love my Apple Pay and use it everywhere I can. I guess the main difference is that the stores have to be set up for it.

While it's better than most services, I still have problems at some checkouts. I wish I could use it at more gas pumps. That said, I stayed with Samsung because of it
and Gear VR

How does Samsung Pay work at the drive thru? Do they bring a thing out there for you to tap with? I'm not handing anybody my phone

Have you never used a card at drive through? lmao

Not sure how this is different. They pass you machine you tap.

Does it work the same as ApplePay? Does AndroidPay also work the same? I think they’re all the same.

Anyway I have ApplePay on my iPhone and I love it to death. All I have to do is doubleclick the home button with it next to the terminal and it’s done in less than a second. So fun. I even used it to buy three songs from the iTunes Store on my phone today and a few days ago I used it on the Apple web site on my MacBook to buy a charger. The browser dropped down a sheet and my phone buzzed and I just pressed my thumb to confirm. Technology is awesome. Doesn’t matter which kind of ***Pay you use its so convenient. I love when I don’t have to take my credit card out of my wallet.

That said, why the hell doesn’t Walmart support any of them at all? They make me use my credit card like a caveman. Hell Kmart has ApplePay here!

Ah well see that is different if they pass you the machine to tap. Normally you just hand your card, they swipe and give it back

Given that Apple Pay and Android Pay do not work at machines that don't have NFC readers and Samsung Pay does, no they don't all work the same.

My bank doesn't support this. I can use my credit card but I just dont like using that. Frustrating as this seems like such an awesome feature.

Short answers - No, No, and you think wrong.

This statement is false.
Walmart supports Samsung Pay.

Okay. Educate me. I haven’t read through the whole thread yet. What are the differences between them all and why doesn’t Walmart have NFC readers then? What does SamsungPay do and how does it work from a user standpoint. How does AndroidPay in comparison? I’d like to know because I don’t.

Like, people have literally asked and answered all of these questions.
(Well, except asking about Walmart specifically, but the answer for that falls from the answers to the other questions).

Thanks. I’ll read through the thread. It just seems like a lot of praising and people talking about chip readers and stuff.

As I said in the very first sentence in the OP, Samsung Pay uses a technology that mimics the magnetic strip in cards.

You hold the phone up to the reader just the same as you would an iPhone. Except if the reader doesn't have NFC, it will think you swiped a card. Apple Pay and Android Pay do not do that.

As for why lots of places don't have NFC, I don't know.

I have never passed my card. What if you have a debit and you have to punch in the number? Drive through always have machines with extension cable

Do you live in the US?

I always hand them the card. One of the only times I don't use Samsung Pay. Maybe there is a machine with an extension cable, but I've never been aware of this.

And if you use a debit card they just run it as credit so there is no need for a PIN (or a signature if it is under a certain amount).

I wish Google had bought the patent before Samsung did.

I've used Android Pay a few times (maybe 10?), but there are so many places that don't support it. 😫

It's one of the handiest apps around and the main reason I stick with Galaxy phones now. Supposedly more secure than swiping the card too. I really wish the technology was opened up to every vendor.

There was no point since they're phasing it out all over. I dont even remember using a swipe recently here in Canada

It failed twice at Walmart (only two times I tried). I wonder if they can somehow detect it and reject it?

Anyway, yes, it really is amazing. Back on the Android Pay struggle train after I gave my wife my S8+ and went back to Pixel XL though.

I have been tempted to try this, but I have always been worried about security. How safe is it to use this over using a card?

Safer. It uses a "virtual card number" just like Android Pay/Apple Pay. Your actual card number is never passed to the retailer.

99% of stores have the ability to read chip cards. The problem is most stores disable the chip function because they don't want to pay the processing fees or set up the infrastructure required. Very few large chain store accept chip cards.

What, I experience the exact opposite. The biggest retail chain I can think of that doesn't use the chip is quick trip, a regional chain of gas stations. Every other retailer uses them: Wal-Mart, target, best buy, gamestop, petsmart, and local grocery stores in my area all use them. I live in the Midwest, the last place for technology to catch on.

So what's the point of buying gift cards through the app? After reading this thread I've been messing around with the app and that's the only thing I don't understand. Does it count as a transaction if you buy the gift card so you get points?

There are discounts on some of them but besides that I'm not sure if there is much of a point. Never bought one myself.

Samsung Pay is for me what iMessage is for a lot of iPhone users: a key feature that causes me to stay with the brand. More cashiers know about it now though so I don't get that fun "That doesn't work here - - wait, it does!?" from them anymore. :(

It can confuse cashiers who think they are "with it" in my experience. A lot of times they will select "Android Pay" or "Apple Pay" when they are checking you out which will fuck it up. You have to say "I'm paying with a card," and THEN pull your phone out. Most people don't understand how the technology actually works (by imitating the magnetic polarization of the strip on the card, NOT by using NFC).

Samsung pay works everywhere that accepts a mag strip
So cute.

Samsung supports a technology that should have been ditched a decade ago, yey.

Meanwhile in the rest of the developed world who has used chip and pin it's just a competitor to Google Pay.

In fact I'd rather use that even with a Samsung device because the account will stay with you if you switch to another Android powered phone.

My word the US still uses machines to swipe a card?

Anyway on a technical level, how does your phone even mimic the card swipe? Doesn't the card have to 'hit' something in the slot for it to register?

No reason to switch to another Android phone if you can afford it since they are the best.

Also, why should I care about chip and PIN? I don't have to pay for fraud either way.

How is this an issue? Samsung is expanding the ability to use your phone as a method of payment in places behind the curb or updating to the newer system. You can't fault them for giving additional options. If anything, this is what Google/Apple pay should have had as an feature to gain support quicker earlier in their rollout.

I have literally never swiped my cards with the magnetic strip anywhere (UK, 25 years old)
Isn't it incredibly insecure? Does Samsung Pay make temporary cards for each transaction like Apple and Android Pay?

Yeah mag strips are pretty insecure (not that most Americans care... if someone steals my card no big deal to me, I wouldn't have to pay for it).

Yes Samsung Pay uses virtual temp cards for each transaction.

Are US POS systems that crappy? In the UK there is no separate button for Android Pay, or Apple Pay or contactless, it's all done under the "Pay by Card" button.

It might be in some places, but pretty much every place I use Android Pay just asks if you're paying with cash or card. You select card and then touch the phone to the payment terminal. It's fine.

My S7 installed the app automatically when it upgraded the firmware few days ago.

Haven't used it or Android Pay yet, (within the past 2 years my credit and debit cards expired, the new cards the bank sends me are never contactless so I've still been using chip and pin. I don't know why they hate me.)

Does the UK get those fancy free money rewards the OP is on about? I might give it a go if they do.

Just tried to buy a Poweball ticket with Samsung Pay but couldn't.

Got it with the regular card. If I win, I will give the next 10 people who reply to this thread $100k each.

Not available on my Canadian S8+ with Bell it seems. Not in the app store, not in the Samsung store, and not preinstalled. Oh well, Android Pay works just fine.

It's good that they do, but wow they really shouldn't have to.

I haven't had a mag stripe transaction using my card here in the UK in more than 8 years so here the idea is very much redundant.

Hence here Samsung Pay hasn't really got that USP but it's certainly something that helps differentiation in markets that use it.
