New Nintendo Switch Owner: Physical or Digital?

I thought the title said "New Nintendo Switch ow-nounced!"

I don't have a Switch but when I do, will definitely go all digital so it can be a 100% portable console.
How is it not portable if you go physical?

I have a case that I always have with my Switch (and surely anyone going portablewould also have a case). Said case holds 14 carts.

How is that not portable?

I'm going digital with just about everything (as I did with Vita) except for games with large cartridge sizes. Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Disgaea 5 Complete and Lego City Undercover were all easy physical purchases due to being 6+ GB.

Splatoon 2 is my smallest physical game purchase although I suspect it'll prove to have been a worthwhile decision to go that route as more and more DLC comes out. It's about comparable to Implosion: Never Lose Hope at just over 3 GB. I picked up the even larger Snake Pass on sale but am not keeping it on my memory card full-time.

Digital all the way. Unless I find something physical super cheap. I lose a lot of stuff and the carts are tiny so I try to avoid it. Plus I'm going minimal now so it works out best.

Physical if its a game I play once or twice and never play through again (BOTW is the only one I own right now on switch). I'll probably buy Mario Odyssey physical since once I am done I doubt I'd come back.

Digital if its a game I may feel like playing randomly once in a while, while I am maybe still playing another game. I own mario kart 8 digitally, its a game I am always up for playing but don't feel like playing more than 20-30 minutes at a time.

Physical all the way save for Eshop only stuff. I save a ton of money with GCU and general retail sales. That and Nintendo games hold their value insanely well. I also kinda like having the physical cases and cartridges.

Digital always. I like having my entire library, I hate clutter and with the amount of games I buy there would be a lot of it.

With the exception of Zelda (which I picked up in the store when buying Switch), I'm entirely digital. Most of the games I am, and will be playing going forward, are Nintendo titles and indies, which are usually fairly small.

Both. I bought Zelda because I collect Zelda games. But I bought Splatoon 2 so I can pop in and out of matches when I want without taking out Zelda.

Now that Nintendo has a better online and account system that will allow your games to follow you, there is no reason not to buy digital from them.

You'll save more money buying physical, mostly from being able to sell games back and not having to buy an SD card. There are deals on eshop cards ever so often so it could even out missing on preorder discounts from best buy and amazon yearly subscriptions. More convenience with not taking physical space + slightly faster load times and having everything at once, but you will have to buy an SD card eventually.

You can do a combination of both if you want. But physical for games you won't touch again after beating them, and go digital if you aren't tight on cash and for games with high replay/you'll know you'll come back to play with friends.

I kind of wish I went all digital with PS4 but then I realize I would have spent more than double $$ on software for the system, I don't sell my games either

I mixed and matched with 3DS and Wii U, but I expect to go fully digital on Switch. The slightly higher price is worth the convenience.

I collect Nintendo, so for me all the major releases( Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc etc) I buy physical. I'll do digital on titles without a physical option( most indies) or VC titles. My 128gb card should last me throughout the life of the system with that strategy.

I find Switch boxes so annoying, I can't see the interest in physical when that means buying these big, empty boxes that hold just a tiny cart, generally speaking no book included -- just a useless plastic shell. Plus digital means you can take all your games with you.

I don't understand why anyone buys physical games at all anymore, unless you're picking up something on 3DS or Wii U. PS4 and Xbox discs are really just installers, the games don't even run off them. What's the point in physical anymore? Just to fill your house with plastic crap?

Digital. I've already gone digital on Xbox and PS4 because of the convenience and not having to switch out disks. Switch would be even more annoying with its lil flap and tiny ass carts. Can't just quickly pop that shit in and out

You say this all the time like such a thing isn't the norm with consoles.

You say this as if that makes it better

I don't buy digital on any console for the same reason.

I don't expect BC with all games, but having to rebuy vc games and having separate skus for different hardware is honestly bullshit

Until it's solved it's a reason to avoid digital. I don't have to worry about this shit when I upgrade my pc . My steam games all there in my library, even if my laptop to weak to play them all

A warning to anyone going digital: Nintendo accounts are still hardware-bound on Switch. The difference is that you, the user, can "deactivate" a Switch, freeing up your account to be used on a different one, rather than having to rely on Nintendo customer service to do that for you. But be aware that in the event that your Switch is lost or irreparably damaged you'll have to rely on Nintendo customer support to deactivate it on their end, and if they're unable to do that for you for any reason everything tied to your account will be permanently lost.

First system I'm going all digital with. Only exception so far has been Breath of The Wild. It's been really great so far since I switch between the Switch's docked/table top/handheld modes all the time and having all my games in the system is very convenient.

While the convenience of digital is nice, I'm nearly all physical. GCU's 20% off and being able to trade-in when they have the 50%+ trade-in weeks is too good for me to pass up.

Most of the games I buy, when it comes to Nintendo, are games that I'll most likely keep playing so digital for now.

The good thing is if you do go physics for Nintendo games, they don't lose too much value.

I stopped buying discs because they are noisy and the drives break, but I still buy carts because I like being able to play the original unpatched or changed version of a game many years later. But I don't buy carts for online games like Mario Kart 8 or Splatoon 2.

I have literally just arrived home with my new Switch with Zelda and Mario Kart physical editions and I'm blown away by how great it is.

Since I live in Brazil and there's no official Nintendo support, it's a pain in the ass to go digital. So I decided to go physical with the Switch for big releases and exclusive games. I'm gonna go digital only on indie and smaller games. Also I think the cases look really nice

That's my first Nintendo console since the SNES and I'm about to play my first ever Zelda game. I couldn't be more excited for the future of Nintendo and I'm glad to be a part of it.

Edit: by the way I'm all digital on PS4.

I personally don't like keeping track of carts because of how small they are, so I've gone all digital on all of my handhelds and with the Switch. I personally bought a 256GB microSD card to future proof for as long as I can (because having to buy multiple microSD cards over time would be just as inconvenient to me as multiple game carts) without having to uninstall/reinstall games, but with how expensive that ended up being a few months ago (got my Switch at launch), it's honestly hard to recommend unless you know for sure you're going to be playing a LOT on your Switch.

The cost of getting a high capacity microSD card right now doesn't really logically work its way into savings on digital titles (which are full MSRP) or some sort of resell value later on. It's just another cost that only gets reimbursed through convenience of not dealing with tiny carts.

Pain in the ass? How? You can buy digitally from the US eShop, Nintendo.com, or Amazon.com. It's extremely simple. You just set your country to United States in your Nintendo Account. Or create a new account for this purpose. What's so hard about that? There's no official support where I am either and games don't get released here and local stores don't bother to import them, so it's either import physical versions myself which is expensive as hell, or buy digitally, which is an absolute godsend.

Go digital. It's changed gaming for me. If your older and time is a crunch flexibility is key. Play what u want where u want fast.

The Switch is the first console I've gone almost pure digital for. Mainly for two reasons.

1. Nintendo never discounts shit, and use copies of games are damn near the same price as the new copy of the game.

2. The download sizes are tiny as hell. Zelda was like...6 gigs? Even with a cheap SD card I'll be able to install 15 or more games at the same time on the system with only a 25 dollar SD investment.

I started with Physical but now thinking go all digital.

I realise I barely play my physical games (lazy to switch cards and never bring them outside home) and they all gone to waste.

My physical copy of Mario Kart and Bomberman almost never get played, while more recent digital purchases like Splatoon 2, Shovel Knights, Overcooked etc always get booted up for a round or two when I want to play them suddenly.

First console where I've gone all digital, and I have no regrets here. It's nice to have my entire library without having to carry around the little cards as well.

100% digital for every game. Don't want to be shuffling sour cartridges like so much a POG collection when you're just trying to boot a game.

It's 2017, time to ditch the game case and be truly liberated.

I've been purchasing single player games physical and multiplayer games digital.

This. There is hardly any point buying Splatoon 2 or Arms physical. The base versions are extremely limited and you can't play most of it offline anyways.

Mario Kart is kind of ok to get physical, oddly enough - hardly any updates and has 4 player local play.

But everything else? I like to get physical.

Zelda is 13 gigs. Its Mario Kart Deluxe is 7GB.

Yeah, you can buy a 64GB micro SD cad for $25.00, which is about a little over 4GB per game if its 15 games. But it depends on the games you buy. AAA 3rd party games will take up a lot of space, easily over 10GB. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Monster Hunter will easily take +10GB each. Dragon Quest 1 &2 already take 32GB

I've gone all digital except MK8 and I regret it. Looking at buying another Switch for the household and I'll now have to buy every game except MK8 again. Other advantages of physical (price, resalabilty) are well documented.

Download games on any platform. Don't be stuck in the past with your dust collectors and the chance of losing them. Your free space is worth more than games.

I wish consoles didn't have optical drives. It's a big waste of space that I shouldn't have to pay for.
