And this was my most anticipated game of the year, while ignoring all the red flags, like the weird as fuck late marketing and no proper e3 presentation.

And I fucking buyed the digital deluxe edition.

Still love you BioWare, DA4 will be amazing, Anthem I'm not sure.
Are there completely different studios making dragons age now cuz that series is as stale and cheesy as all getup.

I guess we don't have much chance getting the remastered trilogy now, right? Come to think of it, with Mass Effect gone there is not one single AAA space opera RPG on the market any more.

It's very sad to see one of my favorite franchises end with a wimper like this. At least we got some good games and a great story and it was a fun adventure while it lasted. I hope Anthem does well for Bioware while it looks like a game I personally won't like but I hope it succeeds for the studios sake.

RIP Mass Effect. Fuck you Bioware, fuck Anthem.

I hope in a few years, EA will attempt to reignite the interest by releasing the trilogy remaster.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Still haven't finished Andromeda, so I'm not too fuss about the game itself not getting additional content support, but definitely depressed with the series being buried.

They never seemed to know what game to make for themselves, so they made a game "for the fans." That was probably their first mistake.

The first Mass Effect game was a revelation.

Made me believe that there was still some fresh vision left in the games industry.

The same goes for the first Dragon Age. Those games were both really good, they had focus. That deteriorated with each sequel; removing more from the rpg-core, adding action and bolting on things like multiplayer.

And this was my most anticipated game of the year, while ignoring all the red flags, like the weird as fuck late marketing and no proper e3 presentation.

The game was; given to a studio that was not ready, there was no help prior to release from main Bioware to help with the production quality, little and late marketing, no real presence at game events and finally now this. Sometimes I get the feeling Mass Effect was send out to die so it wouldn't compete with the Star Wars games.

Beyond Good and Evil, Anthem, Destiny, Ubisofts Toys 2 life space fighter pilot game, Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen, no mans sky, Borderlands next ect

There isn't anything quite like Mass Effect (Unless Xenoblade Chronicles X-2 is in the works) but saying that there is nothing in the same genre as Mass Effect isn't strictly true

This is 100% Untrue. Thanks to Kotaku know exactly what happened with Mass Effect Andromeda's launch. It definitely wasn't sent out to die. It was sent out to live and then have its flaws fixed in a sequel. Bioware just didn't realise how badly ME:A was going to be recieved. They thought it was an 8/10. Consumers thought otherwise and thats what killed it.

Almost none of those are RPGs, let alone being a space opera one.

The draw of Mass Effect wasn't simply the fact that it was in space. Just because a game is set in space doesn't mean that it can replace Mass Effect.

Tell me about it. :/

Somebody do a Star Trek single player RPG already.

A wimper? This is more like a dying, wheezing, sick old man yelling for someone to call the police as he is choking on his own vomit kind of ending.

3 was a wimper. This is like salt in your eyes after a dose of pepper spray.

They literally did everything wrong. Why they even decided to make this game no one will ever know. It's almost like someone was just determined to make SOMETHING after the fuck ups with ME3.

And me I will probably now never play the series because it got so messed up.

Kinda how I feel about Dead Space. I really liked the first one. Started the second one but did not get very far. Just didn't really feel the vibe anymore, and I know 3 only got more action and shit tier storytelling.

I might actually complete 2 at some point though. Not sure Mass Effect 1 is updated enough to play through by itself. Does it have mods at all?

The game closest in feel/structure to Mass Effect 2 is COD:Infinite Warefare. Its set on a space ship, has a galaxy map, you unlock upgrades from side missions ect.

At some point the nitpicking gets ridiculous. Thats like saying Killjoys or Dark Matter aren't a good substitute for Stargate because neither has a Stargate despite being tonally very similar.

I get it. You miss Mass Effect. (Me too) You want to meet the next Tali, Garrus, Liara, Mordin and Wrex to adventure with. (Me too) However at some point you are just going to have to accept that in the scheme of things minor differences will exist.

We got different things from the article then:

The development of Andromeda was turbulent and troubled, marred by a director change, multiple major re-scopes, an understaffed animation team, technological challenges, communication issues, office politics, a compressed timeline, and brutal crunch.[..]This was a game with ambitious goals but limited resources, and in some ways, it’s miraculous that BioWare shipped it at all. (EA and BioWare declined to comment for this article.) [..] Developers in Edmonton said they thought the game was floundering in pre-production and didn’t have a strong enough vision, while developers in Montreal thought that Edmonton was trying to sabotage them, taking ideas and staff from Montreal for its own projects, Dragon Age: Inquisition and Dylan. [..] EA moved many of BioWare Montreal’s developers to EA Motive, putting others on support roles for BioWare’s other games

This to me suggests the game got not enough support from the start, both resource and management wise. Developers fighting amongst themselves and this causing people to actually leave suggests management allowed this to continue and fester instead of stepping in. After it did fail the studio was quickly disbanded. Perhaps sending it out to die is too strongly worded but clearly neither the game nor the studio was very high up EAs priority list.

While this depresses the absolute hell out of me, still got a laugh at them announcing they'll be celebrating N7 day. Like, they (EA, Bioware and whomever else was involved) bungled the absolute shit out of this game, basically promised a DLC that will now never see the light of day...and now want to celebrate with the community?! Gonna be a hard sell there.

I'm still absolutely flabbergasted they never remastered the OG trilogy, gave such a prestigious IP to such a "green" studio, allowed them to release such a bug-ridden game at release AND THEN cancel the obviously hinted at DLC that the diehards had been looking forward to. And that's not counting the various shitstorms this game endured in development (every crazy press conference look at the game, plot leaks, weird questionaire leak, first gameplay leaks, game delays, etc.). Sales were likely disappointing for Andromeda, but this game still sold millionS of copies.

It's honestly hard to fathom a faster way to alienate a passionate fanbase more efficiently then their efforts so far. Almost impressed, even. Now they want us all to get excited for Anthem, the game a sizeable portion of their audience will know first as the game that basically killed their beloved franchise.

I read the crazy Kotaku article about Andromeda before, but I want an entire book devoted to it. What a fascinating, depressing dumpster fire of an existence Andromeda was.

This is not a minor difference. They are completely different.

Can I make my own character in COD? Do I get a say in the story? Can I decide how my character should react to certain events? Can I choose which character to trust and which to be wary of? Will I be able to choose my character class, customize his/her skills and order/control my party members? Do I even have a party? Do I get to do loyalty missions? Do the side mission actually impact the way later events play out both from a story and gameplay stand point? Do I get to explore planets/big zones at my own freewill and do side mission that are available there?

I can keep on going and none of those are small or minor differences. Like I said, just because a game is set in space doesn't mean that it can be considered a replacement for Mass Effect series.

The series is gone and we all have to accept that. I know. What I won't accept is people pointing at other space games and say that I should replace the series with those, because they are similar enough, when they really aren't.

I know that you are trying to help other ME fans by recommending those games as options, I'm not trying to be a jerk. Just saying that while you are doing that with a good intent, it won't really matter in the end, since Mass Effect (and Bioware RPGs in general) was a really unique thing and there aren't any other games like it out there.

The curiosity is going to drive me mad so I'll probably just cave and pick this up soon. Hopefully it doesn't create a retroactive hate towards the original trilogy.

You don't give a major franchise like that to your B team, they clearly weren't up to the task. Now that franchise is shelved indefinitely because of it.

GSG Flash

Nobody ruins my family vacation but me...and maybe the boy!
ME, as a series, has been dead to me since ME1(ME2 being a massive disappointment did it for me). ME:A being the last ME game would not be a big loss for me.

BioWare, in general, is a shell of the company they were before the EA buyout. Wish they were still independent :/

Bioware for me is a completely "wait and see " studio . Would never preorder .

'Please be excited for Anthem'

Please be excited for yet another multiplayer focused game. Please don't miss your single player epic AAA RPGs. No one will be making them anymore anyway if their initials aren't CDPR.

Cyberpunk will have multiplayer and we yet don't know how it will be mixed with singleplayer.

That's a bit different than saying a multiplayer game that will have a single player campaign. The last few Bioware RPGs were singplayer that had multiplayer too.

Everyone copes in their own way. If you need to be a bit confrontational on the internet as part of your process its not going to bother me.

As for your questions

1. Not really. However the experience isn't that different to playing as defult Shepard
2.You couldnt really do that in Mass Effect 2 or 3. Having a say in the story was an illusion that only ever really existed in Mass Effect 1. Even then your "Say" was mostly flavor text
3. Yes
4. In your imagination and sort of through dialogue choices but nothing really effects the game
5.Yes you will be able to somewhat customise your class via loadouts. You won't be able to customise or control your key allies
6. Yes/No you have key allies who spend most of the game with you and they feel very much like an RPG party.
7. No. However the side missions do make you feel closer to the side characters
8. Not sure since i did all of them and only played through it once. It does slightly effect gameplay as you get more weapon options for doing side missions
9. COD:IW is more streamlined. Everything takes place on your ship and choices are made via your galaxy map which functions almost identically to the one in Mass Effect. You are fighting a war so there is no downtime. Functionally it doesn't feel that different to a streamlined playthrough of ME2 or ME3. Especially since COD:IW remembered to have good vista's. The game has a good sense of place despite being so streamlined. It feels like you are travelling to lots of planets not just venturing down different coloured hallways.

I mean at least they're aware this game bombed because of its poor reception and not because people weren't excited for more Mass Effect.

So I'm not quite ready to call RIP.

I think it was both. ME3 did a lot of damage to the reputation of the franchise and combined with this games poor quality it was a death blow.

From day one there was an obvious stench around this project, EA spent years showing as little of the game as they possibly could until a few weeks before launch when they had no choice but to reveal the full game in all it's shoddiness. If they had been more open and honest about the game in the years before release, it probably would have been better received. Instead they stopped caring a long time ago and just tried to hoover up as many pre-orders as they could before dropping this turd and walking away.
