Sakamoto: Want more 2D Metroid? Buy Samus Returns

That's how business works! They won't keep making games if people don't buy them. Thankfully Samus Returns looks amazing so it should sell without much of a problem.

Obviously, but Sakamoto is clearly referring to the disconnect between the vocal online fanbase for metroid and the real world number of units sold in the past. Metroid is great, and one of my favorite franchises, but it has consistently been outsold by other IPs with less vocal fanbases.

Caught between really wanting to support Metroid and my refusal to waste time and money on another ds.

Shit.

I think everyone pretty much expected this, but now we have it confirmed from the mouth of the producer. I already have my copy preordered. What about you, GAF?
I spend half a week trying to preorder a limited edition, got two cancellation, still one holding (fingers crossed)

If Nintendo want us to buy the game, they should first produce it in decent quantities...

I'm torn on this. I haven't touched my 3ds in a long time and have no desire to play it again, but I could definitely go for a new 2D Metroid. I actually enjoyed Mirror of Fate well enough, so perhaps I should just bite the bullet.

Lol the usual buy this game or no sleazy marketing tactic

Yup. Your favorite franchise is now hostage to sales. Better make sure your friends buy copies too. Don't forget the amiibos. This is just gross. Honestly, I want to support this game but the way they're going about it makes me hesitant.

I also want more 3D Metroid too...

But yeah, I'm not liking these type of comments said so much. I suppose the brutal truth is it can come down to that whether future games can happen, but you should really be trying to sell the game on it's own merits, not the potential of future installments or holding it hostage to that really.

I'm not really excited about Samus Returns since I already have it for Game Boy and beat it. I'm not a big Metroid fan but since Castlevania is pretty much dead now I guess I'll purchase Samus Returns so we get a new Metroidvania for Switch.

Par for course, standard stuff.

Yeah I'm.

I'm pretty sure it'll mostly be different.

You expect more games to be made without sales? Nintendo knows they don't make Metroid because of the sales and they're giving Metroid another chance

You would think the 3DS is some evil person the way some people talk about it

Folks are still mad that Nintendo won't immediately abandon a massive install base for a currently fairly small one.

People are still having problems even getting one for crying out loud.

Well, honestly, it has always been the case, it's just that from time to time they voice it (even more so when they're asked about it). I don't doubt a second they decide on future released based on sales of previous iterations.

This series that has historically not been a heavy sales franchise for us will be given a good last chance to prove the market viability is larger than the fan's romanticism about it and that it's a franchise that can be successful financially.

That was Fire Emblem.

Most other companies would have axed the Metroid franchise long ago.

You're right let them just keep on making games that sell badly, makes perfect sense!

Sadly companies don't and shouldn't make games that sell bad to appease what data shows (with sales) a niche market of fans

Already planning on buying it anyway, game looks fantastic and I'm excited to see another new 2D Metroid on the Switch someday.

Regarding the amiibo thing, I get why people don't like it--really, I do. At the very least I think amiibo content should be offered as DLC. But do keep in mind that Metroid has never offered a "super-hard" mode before. Typically there's a standard hard mode available after you've completed the game once (which this game still has) and that's it, so at least in that case it's not like they're locking content that ordinarily exists in Metroid games behind it (the art gallery and sound test are another story, although those are pretty minor and will be easily findable on the Internet anyway). I personally doubt they would've even made Fusion mode if they didn't have amiibo to sell to begin with.

Stating the obvious here. If this and Prime 4 flop I wouldn't expect another Metroid for a loooooong time. A Wave Race and F-Zero amount of time.

Isn't every commercial product ever hostage to sales? Nintendo (or any other company) isn't our buddy who makes games because they love us and want to see us happy. They just want our money and don't give too much of a shit about us otherwise.

The amiibo shit is gross, though. Buy the game (if you're interested in it), don't buy the amiibo, spam Nintendo's social media to make sure they know you think their amiibo practices are shit. It's not that hard.

Not on 3DS nah.
A HD one on Switch if this one is decently succesfull would be cool hopefully not another remake/reimagening tho but a Metroid game finally after Fusion.

It would be cool to see samus be hunted down by monsters/metroids, space pirates and the federation.
