Giant Bomb |OT31| I Think it Might Be for Show

I think Dan was just cocky and went into it overestimating his ability and memory for the combat systems. He seemed pretty happy with himself for remembering how the metagame works, and I think that encouraged him that he could go into the combat missions and do his 'protect dan above everyone else' bit and still be ok.

Then when things started going wrong he didn't know how to right the ship.

This plus not accounting for not being able to save scum is it, I think.

I wonder how he'd play if Abby or Alex manage to get his character killed?

They should play Final Fantasy Tactics for the next game in this series.

They will completely wipe in the Battle at Dorter Trade City.

Sadly I think people won't want to watch a turn based RPG for a series. You're right that they wouldn't get far in the game, but since Tactics makes it a lot easier to fail upwards, I bet they'd get there eventually.

I'm actually OK with them being reckless, it's kinda the whole point to treat it all like a show. I've already seen the end of XCOM, and it'd be rad if they hamfisted their way to the end somehow, but if they don't I'm OK.

The one thing I do wish they did was if they cycled in completely fresh soldiers into every mission. Like, just swap out one of the already promoted units with another person. This has several benefits. For starters, it lets them create new characters and add them to the Exquisite Corps canon. Also, it lets them have insurance. That way it's not a huge bummer if two of their units die, for example. Not that that would happen.

So a bug definitely killed Vinny. The one silver lining is that it wasn't a chrysallid.

I think the problem with the XCORPS' commander so far is that they don't all understand the core mechanics of the game. Their understanding of stuff like flanking and its bonuses, cover and its bonuses, height and its bonuses, action points, basic soldier skills, etc. are all at varying levels which is crippling their ability to survive in battles. (The strategic map is a whole 'nother beast.) Once the game transitions into more advanced enemies they'll be completely lost.

Also, as much fun as it'd be to see them try XCOM 2, I don't think they're quite ready yet. The XCOM EU to EW to XCOM 2 to (hopefully) WotC gameplay all build upon the previous foundation, so not getting one chain in the link will make the later ones harder.

Yeah, maybe it defeats the purpose in spirit but it would be good for them to have all been present for the first handful of eps until the game is at least done tutorializing so they could get the basics down.

I haven't watched yet but from reading I'm not surprised Dan torpedoed the whole thing for 'entertainment value' and didn't even try beyond his self-preservation shtick.

Dan tried for the most part, he just hit a point where he needed to slow down and regroup and he never did.

Nah, it was a scripted mission that lulls you into a false sense of security before shit hits the fan. He then didn't manage to reorganise and played poorly. Given what we've seen so far, i don't think any of them would have managed without casualties.

Not to say dan wasn't a bit cocky, but save for Alex, they all seem a tad overconfident.

To add on to my earlier thing about a tutorial/basics explaining video, I think at this point Vinny at the very least should probably read up on how some things work?

That way he can totally let them flounder when it's funny but also go "no, that literally won't work" if needed? Or not. Things are fun like this but I don't know if Vinny as a constant presence works as well if he's just as confused as them.

I think the feature works pretty well as is.

I just hope they don't give up when they inevitably loose and try again. It would be a shame if it was short lived.

They really should go out of their way to get Dan killed

It's all part of the story. When they get to XCOM 2, then they can have Punished Ryckert, a man who let the aliens take it all from him, and he let them out of cowardice. Then we can have the redemption arc in XCOM 2 when he sacrifices himself for his comrades..

So y'all are saying it's time for Game Tapes: Gamescon 2017?

That's like ten years too early.

I'd actually go the opposite direction and say Vinny should know nothing, being a devil/angel-on-the-shoulder type of person. Because otherwise they will rely on him to explain things and he'll become de facto commander, particularly later in the game. (Alex was getting worryingly close to doing this in his ep, even.)

In terms of game overs, I think the feature could start over from the beginning again with no issue, provided they skip the tutorial this time. (Not the MELD one, but the regular one.) Once they understand the basics they'll go through missions and the strategic map faster, and hopefully do better.

it sure is.

have they ever done a 'Giantbomb talks over ....' for a conference posthumously?
They have a feature called Game Tapes. It's been years since they've done it, but if I'm remembering correctly, I think it's them doing commentary over past events. I'm not completely sure about that, though. Someone want to confirm?

They realize that bad conferences are more memorable. People still talk about that Konami conference and the PS3 reveal conference. Who talks about the good ones?

I guess? But I assume they are in the business of selling games and bad conferences don't really inspire people to go out and buy their stuff. Then again, their sports franchises sell no matter what so they probably don't give a fuck.

I hope they just immediately kill Dan during the next episode so he can start playing the game like a normal person.

I can definitely see Abby playing extra recklessly with Dan next episode.

One Gamescom conference was enough for me so I didn't even get a glimpse of the EA one lol.
who asked for a fear effect remake

literally who

While I didn't ask for it, I certainly appreciate it. I enjoyed the game back in the day but that's also because I loved Resident Evil and still do. People who are not into fixed camera angles or tank controls should steer far away from Fear Effect. Badass score though.

OK fine. They should play Jagged Alliance 2 then.

Watching Brad lose his shit over overzealous camera zooms when they talked over Gamescom the last time was a treat. Shame they don't cover it since there aren't many newsworthy things at that show anymore.

I think Dan may be bad at XCOM, you guys.

I'm excited to see how Abby handles the worst possible situation that could've been handed over to her.

I looked at the sun and it was just the fucking sun. The government is trying to get idiots like me to blind themselves.

So what's the big deal with this sun thing? Twitter is exploding with shit regarding it.

I guess it's better than hearing about Trump, police killing people and rapes.
