Super Famicom Mini Trailer posted by Nintendo Japan

Earthbound is part of the SNES Mini for the US & EU. Japan gets 4 games swapped.

Earthbound = Fire Emblem
Super Punchout = that Soccer game
Kirby's Dream Course = Panel de Pon
Super Castlevania IV = Goemon

I'm still surprised we couldn't just get Kirby's Avalanche as a Panel de Pon replacement.

Man I wish they would sell those controllers separately. Could use it with a real SNES using the 8bitdo wireless receiver, which works with wiimotes and connected classic controllers.

Was that part where Mario did a spin jump on to a Super Metroid file a sort of "Demo Mode" where it plays your save files? My Japanese is sort of none existent so I'm not sure what was being shown at that part.

https://youtu.be/Nvg00aOwqxk?t=4m26s

It is a demo mode. NES Classic had something similar, where if you don't press any buttons for a few minutes, random games are launched, but that's it. There's no "CPU" actually playing the game after it's launched, unless the original game was already programmed to have that (i.e. an "attract mode").

It's hard to tell since I don't understand Japanese, but it seems the SNES Classic will in fact have a CPU playing your save games in demo mode. Or maybe that's just the standard demo that plays when you don't press Start in Super Metroid. I don't remember.

But if it is true, that's pretty crazy, assuming the CPU actually plays the game well at any given save point. And if it works for games that are later added when the inevitable jailbreak comes? That's super impressive.

I would assume that given the goofy ownership situation of it being a Puyo Puyo game, Nintendo may have felt it inappropriate to include what would now be technically considered a Sega game in with a SNES/SFC compilation.

One of those situations where licensing really bit them in the ass in the long run. It made perfect sense back in the day to tie Panel de Pon to the most popular puzzle game on the planet to sell it abroad, but in hindsight, they might have wanted to come up with Puzzle League then to avoid this issue.

Eh, I'm sure they could figure it out if they tried.

But my partner’s saying “but it is money!” So, uhhhh, so, we, I, reluctantly agreed. In retrospect, we should never have done that. I don’t think that’s a good idea. It dilutes the brand, it’s like naming another cartoon character Mickey Mouse just cause you need the money. It’s just a bad idea. So I wouldn’t do that again.

Probably not.

Man I wish the snes mini had Tetris Attack too (Panel de Pon). Loved that puzzle game!

Still salty over Chrono Trigger not being part of the lineup...

Probably not.
That's kind of the opposite point. Tetris Attack didn't really harm Tetris (crap like Bombliss and soulless Tetris versions did a much bigger job of that), but a renamed Panel de Pon - or heck leave the name as-is, could have created a decent brand in the west. Same with Puyo. Instead the gameplay never got its own brand until it was too late, and even then it was a bland name.

Actually it's not too late Nintendo, Panel de Pon Switch with all the animu and everything in English please! Puyo Tetris is showing how it's done!

After missing my chance for a NES Mini, I'm glad I didn't get one because after preordering a SNES Mini, I've realised that I'm going to have so much more fun on it than the NES.

I'm surprised to see the Super Famicom Mini hasn't been made available for pre-order in Japan yet. I want to import one, along with grabbing the NA version (If I can get a pre-order).

Hopefully they go up soon.

People are mentioning that Tetris interview so I'll just repost my past post of the whole thing.

_______

I found the rest of that interview from my earlier post.

Again, this was back in E3 2009.

https://www.destructoid.com/interview-with-alexey-pajitnov-and-henk-rogers-on-tetris-135296.phtml

Well, I want to ask you about two specific games. How do you feel about Lumines, which is a beautiful game, and how do you feel about Tetris Attack?

HR: OK, well, Tetris Attack, we’ll do the second one first, Tetris Attack. Nintendo came to me soon after we formed The Tetris Company, and we were just wrestling with what we were going to do. And so, at the time, we had the copyright, the gameplay, and the name “Tetris”, and our Russian partners, who knew nothing about nothing, and I’m not talking about Alexey, I’m talking about Electronica Technica, they wanted to make money, no matter what. That’s it, “however you could make money, make money”. When Nintendo came to us, and said “we would like to take this Japanese game called Panel de Pon, and rename it Tetris Attack, I’m saying, “it’s not Tetris”.
AP: It wasn’t a bad game.
HR: It was a good game! But the game should have had its own life, its own name.
AP: Unfortunately, it was too much corporate play …
HR: It should have had its own name. It kind of got lost in history cause it got the name Tetris, but it’s not Tetris. It could have, it should have stood up on its own two feet. That’s how I feel about games in general.
Lumines, great game. I mean, it’s funny, cause the guy, his name is Mizuguchi, he’s a great friend, and Mizuguchi came to me a few years ago, before Lumines, and he said “I’ve got this great idea and I want to make Tetris on the PSP” and at the time, I was kind of stuck. I had promised the rights to Sony, we were in the middle of negotiations, and I couldn’t really give it to him. He goes “Ok, well, I’ll have to create my own game.” And that was it, man [laughs]. It’s like “dang! I should have let him have a shot at Tetris!” And now we’re in the same position again. The exact same position. We had breakfast with him this morning, and it’s like “uhh, I hate to say this, but we already have somebody licensed for this, for, PSP 2 or whatever it is.” [Sighs] It can’t be helped [both laugh].
AP: He’ll come up with another great game.
HR: Yeah, he’ll come up with another huge game.

So, it sounds less bad than the reference I found on Wikipedia linking the preview of the interview.

They seem to do fine with the Puzzle League brand, though it sure would be swell if they could release one that doesn't require me to get Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

Super fucking hyped, it will sit proudly next to my NES mini. SNES and PS1 are my favorite consoles of all time, and I have big regrets letting my SNES go when I was a teenager. So glad I get it back, even if it isn't the OG console, that is way too expensive to collect for.

I actually want this more than the SNES Classic...the box art and menus alone are badass and it should be easy to hack so will go alongside my famicom mini quite nicely. Then there's just the weird stuff that never came out here that had me hyped...I mean the Famicom mini has a sumo game and two River City Ransom titles. First time I went to Japan my gf's family still had an og super famicom sitting in their cabinet and I've wanted one ever since.

Yeah don't count those chickens just yet...

Even if not I'm still ordering the SNES as a backup if I hop on it quickly enough but seriously...this is Nintendo we're talking about and the NES Classic was hacked within days practically: there's no way for them to patch it out and there's not much incentive for them safeguard it...not like you can buy more games for it to eat into revenue.

Some of those games are downright unplayable.

Soccer and Mario Kart for SNES, really?

They could have picked better games.

BOMBERMAN 4?

Is the SNES Classic still 720p like the NES Classic or 1080p now?

Not sure, but I'm willing to bet 720p. It has something to do with 240 being a factor of 720, but not a factor of 1080. So 240p scales more cleanly to 720p. That's my rough understanding.

Judging by the border size used it seems to be 3 times the SNES' native resolution (256x224) within 720p. For 1080p pixel perfect would only fit 4 times with a way larger border, with 5 times already being to big to fit.

While I'm greatly looking forward to this, I'm also so damn annoyed that Chrono Trigger isn't included. The SNES Mini would have been so perfect if it did.

It shows the last 30 seconds or so of your gameplay for each save game.
It's not the CPU, it's your own recorded footage, kind of like how the PS4 automatically shows the last 15 minutes of your gameplay when you press the Share button.

What's up with Dragon Quest? When it was absent on Famicom Mini I thought maybe S-E was saving it for SFC Mini but there's still nothing. I understand that 1-3 are getting new ports but DQV?
