Does anyone here avoid killing bugs?

HStallion

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I try to avoid it if possible, even things like centipedes but I have killed ants that got into my food and fuck bed bugs. Those fucking things are a nightmare and I'd take a roach infestation over them any day of the week.

It depends on the bug, as others have said. I let most spiders live, and many insects as well.

Stuff like mosquitoes and cockroaches and black widows die though.

Fuck msquitos and the like, but I do feel bad stepping on bugs outside now. Lol. There whole existence leading up to that point snuffed out in a single step. Feels bad.

I avoid killing most good bugs. If there's a spider or centipede in my room, I try not to kill it unless it's near my bed. Mosquitos I destroy though, everything else I let be, especially bees. They're just fat dumbos.

Oh wasps though, just like mosquitos, get killed.

Yeah. There's this weird programing most people have. If they see a bug, they kill it. WTF is wrong with you savage assholes?

When it comes to parasitic insects, like mosquitos, I can see the justification, particularly if they can spread diseases, but most insects in and around the home are just living their little lives, often times supporting their ecosystem to your benefit.

Fuck spiders and everything they stand for. I actually hate killing them but don't have it in me to try catch them instead. My main peeve is the suicide snails that litter the dark path to the house anytime even a drop of water lands.

I don't kill any. I've been letting them outside instead, made the decision to stop killing bugs like 2 years ago. But i'm arachnophobia so its kinda hard sometimes.

It's mainly wasps/hornets that bother me, I check my shed for their nests every week or so. Mosquitos get slapped on principle too.

Spiders and bees are cool and do good work, my favourites are the huge Cardinal spiders that race around our airing cupboard. However, we do get shitloads of false widows around here that can give a nasty bite if they get big enough. Now that my toddler is often running around outside I'll splat any large ones that I see that she might cross paths with. Sorry fellas.

Most other stuff I try to get photos of, we get cool shieldbugs, grasshoppers, beetles and jumping spiders. My wife finds it cute when we're gardening that I'll stop to photograph or rehome critters that are in danger of getting chopped up or buried. Snails are always going for our fruit trees but I gently rehome them where possible.

So I was going back through this thread just now when this asshole flew in through the window behind me...

That'd be an example of a bug I definitely won't avoid killing... Also if anyone can identify this thing, I'd appreciate it. Need to know what sort of hive I have to go hunt down now...

What the fuck, are you people insane ? Why on earth are you killing everything passing by ? Mosquitoes I get it, ok flies can be annoying and are not really healthy but killing things that can"t even harm you is just stupid. People are even killing ladybugs, christ.

Why not drive over cats in the street since we're at it.

there is an ongoing war in my home being fought. me vs the cockroaches and i honestly dont think i will win. kill one and two appear.

You shouldn't actually kill those.

Get this stuff, put it around your house in strategic areas, and resist the urge to kill them on sight. They will eat this, poison themselves, take it back to the hive, die, and then they BECOME the poison, because their comrades eat them, and then also die.

We had an issue in the townhouse we used to live in. We had a flood, so the walls had to be perforated, which let them in from our gross neighbor's unit. Used this stuff, and a couple weeks later, no more problem.

Ugh. And you just KNOW there's some reason we can't just burn them all permanently.

Btw, is it true that we could exterminate all mosquitos without any negative consequences?

I'm so glad to have only seen a single cockroach in 28(18 in the city) years, and it was outside, in the bushes close to our house.

I trap bugs under a glass and then slide a piece of cardboard under it and then I go outside and shake the glass out and then the bug touches me and I run back inside screaming. Once in a blue moon I'll kill one if it is unspeakably hideous.

Spiders are lethal here so of course I kill them.

A cluster fly can lay eggs in a crack in the floor or a wall so of course I kill them too or I'll have an infestation soon.

Since I was a kid. When I lived in England and we had this sunroom and I'd always leave the door open and tons of fucking bees would always get stuck. I'd get 'em with the old cup and postcard trick and release them.

To this day I do it if possible. I don't care if it's like one of the really tiny things either. Takes all of seconds to trap and release them on our patio.

That is if I get to them before our cat does. She just eats them.

For most bugs, like mosquitos, I'm pretty sure the only reason is "It will destroy the food web and ecosystem" but I don't know that that applies to cockroaches and wasps... Not too many things seem to enjoy eating those.

Same here. Unless any of them is annoying the shit out of me while i'm doing something, then the nerve will take care of them.
But in general i avoid killing any kind of living creature.

I have a personal rule that if a spider is on the roof out of reach I'll leave it be. Better for me because it'll kill flies and mosquitos that make it inside (plus a couple others). Though if they leave that defined area and I catch them their lives are entirely up to how I'm feeling at that moment

That's the thing, supposedly, mosquitos could be removed and the system would keep on systeming.
Wasps actually kill a bunch of stuff that you don't want in the garden. They eat, they aren't eaten, as their most important role.

If he's in my house, he will drown in Raid.

Just give the little thing some sugar water and send them on their way.

I'm no expert but with those glossy markings it looks like an Eastern cicada killer to me. Large ground-hunting wasp.

Yeah it was fuckin' nasty...not something I want to have to go through again. One of the several reasons I came to the conclusion that townhouse/condo life is not for me...the place is only as clean as the sloppiest neighbor.

Actually, ladybugs seem to be the one exception everyone has agreed upon so far (unless I missed someone saying they don't spare those specifically, anyway).

Ok, yup, digger wasps. Kind of what I figured, none of the other species around here are that big and lumbering when they fly. Had a kid step into a hive at one point a few years back and the possibility of it happening again has terrified me ever since. Good to know their around ahead of time this time at least. Thanks!

Sounds like a really fascinating species actually and probably not the same type as what the kid stepped in. With all the cicadas around right now, this definitely looks to be what I just swatted, unfortunately.

I've always avoided killing them. Will go out of my way to step around them on the sidewalk. Don't want to kill them when found indoors if I can. Even some attempt to put them in a good equivalent environment. But I'll kill them if they pest too terribly much.

Oh yeah, I do genocide ants when I can.

Anything I can save, I will.

Unless it's either bit or stung me.

We had a decently bad ant problem and I was doing all I could to not really kill them, just kill the search parties.

Then one bit me, and Ive basically declared holy water against them.

Anything that flies, I just capture and release outside away from my house.

Spiders = if they're not in my path, they're okay. If they're up in the house, they die. Every few months, a giant spider decides to suspend itself right outside the walkway to my front door. That spider dies. (I don't like doing this, but once I had the same fucker just not get the message like 4 times)

Terrestrial spiders? If i catch you in my house, you die. ESPECIALLY wolf spiders. Jesus christ fuck those things

Any other situation though, I let spiders thrive. Outside, in the yard, orb weaver outside my window, i let them do their thing. Until i'm in danger of walking through that web, then it gets knocked down.

House Centipede? RIP

Roaches? RIP

Bees? I'll do my best to let you out, i rarely kill those.

Wasps? cunts, RIP
