Monster Hunter World - Gamescom Impressions

I think that expecting more than one new area total is a bit much, especially at the level of detail and interactivity that they're pushing here. The announced and expected biomes support a good variety of monsters as is, so they'll simply be shuffled into the existing lineup like they were always meant to be a part of that area.

Yeah, and this is a big reason I would like to know how long they plan on supporting the game post-launch.

Given the circumstances behind this series history thus far, Capcom is an unique opportunity to expand a series that's already a great fit for the GaaS service concept into something truly special.

The small (but often) bite-sized offerings the handheld entries received post launch were something I really enjoyed about them, and I would like to see it continue into World. However, now that we find ourselves at a console-level again, I think that changes a few things.

Content is king in a game like MH, which is why I imagine topics like monster count are still a highly discussed subject here lol, and these days content is often spread out across a larger portion of time in order to keep the player base satisfied while providing a consistent reason to return to the game, and while the smaller sized offerings might have been cool on a portable, I feel when your comparing it to it's peers on a console level, or furthermore a GaaS level, it will come up short if that's all there is.

So, in order to prevent those optics, I believe Capcom has a long plan for MHW that is on a level above what we have seen previously, hence the several areas as DLC rather than one guess earlier. If they combine the smaller updates approach with a consistent but slower release of larger more "traditional" DLC, I think they have a winning recipe for a MH game people are playing for a while.

I also believe a lot of the groundwork that has gone into building this game was done so with the ability to quickly produce additional content in mind.

Of course pricing is a different subject, and I could be wrong, but if I'm right then I could easily see MHW being supported for years to come not unlike we have seen with games like Rainbow Six: Siege.

They add new areas as well?

Yeah I think the easiest way will be to add new biomes as well.

I might actually try hunting horn now that you can put song notes and corresponding buttons/colors in the HUD.

Man what kind of hunting horn user doesn't even know his own songs?!

I guess that's still pretty cool.

lol it's more of a barrier to entry to becoming a hunting horn user. The main reason I never attempted to main it is because I couldn't memorize song effects and if I switched to a different hunting horn it would change songs and colors.

It's a valuable learning tool for newcomers that are coming to grips with using the HH and its unique limitations from horn to horn. Since I imagine that the overlay is toggle, it's also something that one can ween themselves away from once they're comfortable.

smh World confirmed casual.

this is a great addition. Now I don't have to awkwardly scroll to my equipment to check the song list when it's been a while

Honestly I wouldn't really mind having a small number of monsters in the game if they just bring back that system where you can trade a merchant for materials from monsters not in the game and still make their gear.

I hope they don't bring back gen 1 or 2 monster besides the los's, that was one of my biggest problems with 4 generation.

You know people shouldn't just main a single weapon. It's good to learn a few weapon class because sometimes some weapon class isn't effective against a certain monster.

Always familar yourself at least 1 fast weapon, 1 shield weapon,1 range weapon and 1 technical weapon.

I got by in MH3U with just GS and hammer/HH. Everything important covered in those.

Man, all those people saying how having a more open world would mean less variety in a area must be looking foolish.

Whoa holy shit.

This is literally everything I wanted plus extra. I'm gonna use the shit out of hunting horns now.

Man...these videos look great. I've been a Hammer main (since MHF2) and then a Charge Blade main (since MH4U).

I'm glad CB moveset looks pretty good. Exciting times!

Looks interesting. I wish I could appreciate MH more. I like the difficult but battle's duration are very long. I don't feel motivated enough to battle a monster again when I die after a 20+ min fight. Also looting rare is a pain in the ass. I hope they address those issues(IMO) one day.

Multiplayer is the solution to both of your problems, although village quests are pretty easy for a solo player. Monsters have very little health.

If you know what you are doing it takes 5 maybe 10 mins top to beat a monster.

Monsters go down incredibly quickly in this series. If a fight takes you 20 minutes the first time you'll most likely be able to shave off half that time on your second fight with it.

Maining in Mon hun? People do that?

I wouldn't call it maining, but there are a set of weapons I prefer using over another set. I never liked the feel of the bow and always opted for bowgun if I ever wanted to range. Never liked hammer, could never master the gunlance or hunting horn in any effective way. Never took the time to learn the charge blade or switch axe. I'm a simple person. I like GS, LS, DB, HBG/LBG, and Lance.

I have been using bow since MHFU, the only weapon I use.
Edit: I have tried other weapons, but they remain used below 5. Bow just feels right to me.

I mained HH in Generations. Glad you can see the songs outside of the menu. I ain't got time to memories all my horn songs across multiple weapons.

I have mained weapons in pretty much every MonHun I've played. Thought it was a pretty common thing to do.

Can't wait to play this. Switch Axe here I come.

Maining for me means the go to weapon when I just wanna beat some monsters or if I am having trouble with a hunt. I have used all weapons multiple times over the course of the series and I will continue to make multiple sets for the foreseeable future.

I think thats new, loot description tells you how to obtain the item in question. Useful for new players who don't know some parts are more likely to be obtained from rewards by breaking specific parts and such.

This all looks too good. I'm impressed by how large and dense the environments are, along with the monster interactions. Also palicos in a tube/raft in the water.

Heavy bowgun definitely looks interesting this iteration, with the mortar shot, sniper shot, heavy machinegun shot
Will probably be the only ranged weapon I mess around

That Switch Axe looks a lot more fun than Generations' Switch Sword with Axe-themed Bonus Features.

When's in-depth for Charge Blade and Dual Blades though?

Switch Axe has always been "Switch Sword with Axe-themed bonus features" since it was first introduced in MHTri. Sword mode has had so much more better damage output than Axe mode in nearly every game that veteran players mostly just ended up using Axe mode to reload so they can go back to using Sword mode again. MHGen gave you the means to reload in sword mode thus players no longer had a reason to even touch Axe mode anymore.

The only exception to this is the "Brave Style" Switch Axe in MHXX. Here, not only does the axe mode have the best move for quickly filling up your brave gauge but once you're in brave mode using Axe mode allows you to chain evades together which is something that you cant do in Sword Mode. Did I mention that the main DPS combo uses both sword AND axe attacks? This is recent proof that Capcom can make Axe mode useful if they want to (either that or it's a fluke).

After seeing the MHWorld in depth switch axe video it seems that Axe mode has been relegated to mediocrity again while Sword mode gets all the buffs and new moves. Axe mode stays losing....

How big is the actual world going to be? Not super concerned with size since it looks intersting to get around, just curious.

It's not an open world. You have a hub and then you choose a quest which will take you to an area like the forest or the desert.

The areas look to be decently sized but not huge.

So about the switch axe..

Does the infinite axe combo still go into the roundhouse swing into sword transform if you hit R2?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW31JosWPdI&feature=youtu.be&a&t=2m18s

In the top right hand corner where it shows the list of possible attacks you can follow with from your previous move, while Arrekkz is using the infinite axe combo, it says "Axe: Morph Sweep" if you press the R2 button.

EDIT: My bad, you were specifically asking about the roundhouse move. There doesn't seem to be a prompt that shows up during the infinite axe combo unfortunately :(

I give you one good reason why the axe mode is better than sword mode in switchaxe

The infinite swing chop. That shit looks fucking badass and that is a good enough reason.

I'll infinite swing chop whenever there is chance. Monster fell down? Fuck the explosion sword finisher, just swing chop that fucker to oblivion.
