Microsoft (Aaron Greenberg) confirms they're in talks with Sony about crossplay

https://www.gamereactor.eu/news/585493/Microsoft+confirm+theyre+in+talks+with+Sony+about+crossplay/

When asked if Microsoft had been discussing things further with Sony after their reluctance to partake in the Minecraft crossplay saga, this was Greenberg's response:

"Absolutely, yeah. We're talking to Sony [about crossplay], we do partner with them on Minecraft and of course we would like to enable them to be part of that; one community, to unite gamers. So we're talking to them and we're hopeful that they'll be supportive of it."

Update: "it is still Sony's fault"

They really just need to allow it. It's like the most business decisions of business decisions. Do they still advertise with 'for the players'?

Hopefully they make inroads. The ideal will be crossplay with all platforms, but who knows if that'll ever happen.

If it comes to fruition it will be great for consumers. Not holding my breath as there is little incentive for Sony (or any market leader) to ever do so.

They can easily change that slogan to 'for the playstation players' lol.

Hopefully they finally listen and just do it though.

Man, Sony could turn this into such a big win if they could be bothered. Imagine a bombshell moment like announcing CTR remake, multiplatform, with online cross-play. it's a shame they're not budging on this.

Why would CTR be multiplat to begin with?

Not making playstation customers sign up for a xbl account to crossplay would be step 1.

It's a Microsoft account. If you've bought from Microsoft, or used skype or any of their services, you are already in anyway. Don't see the big issue here. They need it to authenticate and see what you own.

That's also just for Minecraft, don't need any Microsoft account for other crossplay games.

I'd beinterested to see if this gets implemented and MS gets in a greater than 2:1 lead next gen if crossplay turns into a "last gen" feature for MS.

Minecraft still has to sell on PS4, so of course Microsoft has to say they've been talking to Sony about it. They are still a partner in that sense and have to protect their product.

Isn't Skype in PS4? It's the same login anyway.

Why doesn't Sony allow cross play? Curious what you guys think. It has to do with money I bet, and keeping the PlayStation experience locked to PkayStation consoles.

MS is all for cross play because of their new Windows + console unification strategy. Sony doesn't have this, and had instead made PlaySation the center of its entertainment ecosystem.

Looking at it from Sony's point of view, I have no idea why they would want to do this (or spend any time at all implementing it).

It'd be great tho.

Hasn't that been their stance for awhile? It doesn't sound like they've made progress.
Biggest roadblock for Sony is the compulsory Xbox Live login required on Minecraft PS4 for this, otherwise Sony would've allowed this ages ago

I doubt MS would've allowed vice versa to happen if it was Sony with the Minecraft mandatory PLAN login on Xbox required

Except they don't have to, the developers are already doing all the work and are ready to roll it out, they only need the go ahead from Sony. That's how stupid this situation is. Several developers have already confirmed this.

Not that I am aware of.

I feel like some of the higher ups think they don't need it. Not Shu so much, but like the board or whatever. Top of the chain. Basically the ol' Square Enix thing of "We're the best so why do we need anyone's help?". It'd be really nice though, it'd increase the playerbase for certain games a lot.

Why not just use PSN login data like all others cross-game play?

Isn't the purpose of cross-play as in Minecraft that you can use your account and game state across different platforms? Why should Microsoft use PSN logins for that instead of their own account system, which is 100% compatible with Minecraft.

They'd need to implement an entirely new login system if they wanted to support PSN logins on Minecraft for iOS and Android for example. Not sure if that's even possible.

They won't do it. Sony already charged for online fees.

It is in the interest of the top dog to ignore the existence of its competitors, more so when it's did 2 time+ more sales.

The reasoning to the whole first to 10m sales was to get early marketshare as possible so that friends of early adopters will follow suit to the ecosystem if they wanna play with each other.

I do wish Sony at the very least go cross play with PC though.
