Microsoft (Aaron Greenberg) confirms they're in talks with Sony about crossplay

Because once you open the gates you can't close it. Minecraft and Rocket League may not be a big deal, but what if FIFA 18 and Call of Duty: WWII wants to merge playerbases? Suddenly Sony loses a competitive advantage: people buy a PS4 to play with their friends.

That's why they won't do it. It's just not going to happen.
In majority of cases this wouldn't be true because they will still have to pay a PS4 because things like cross platform parties(Voice/online play) won't be a common thing because of the cost related to setting up and maintaining those services.

But you can use DLC attached to MS account without buy on PSN.

You can also use DLC purchased on the ps4 to play on the switch. This is all about Sony being backwards in thinking. This only makes everyone more money including them. The ps4 version becomes trash now. Only a fool would buy DLC on it now just buy on mobile.

Maybe I'm confused but didn't MS just shut down crossplay in fortnite? Also where are all the PC/X1 crossplay games. Seems that would be super easy for MS to push to developers.

Do you happen to have a list of xbox one games that have issues with matchmaking. And sony would have the same way huge player base *facepalm*

They already have the bigger pool (not specifically in Minecraft, but in most games that go PC + PS4 or even just PS4 vs Xbox One. Why would they do something that allows the competition to equalize that factor?

Why would Sony ever agree to this? It's dumb to do so.

Friend wants to play with other friends on Minecraft. He has a choice. Get a PS4.

Open up crossplay and what does Sony gain? That same person buys an XBox instead of a PS4?

Sony isn't in the business of making XBox gamers happy. That's Microsofts job.

Why anyone thinks Sony should be in the business of helping XBox One get sales rather than a PS4 for online play with friends is beyond me.

Considering it's Microsoft we are talking about there's most likely some really ugly small print clauses which make it impossible to sign for any sensible company.
Microsoft = evil. Sony = super Jesus.. Like 20 times Jesus plus 40 ghandi.

Got it.

You jumped around my question. Do you have a list of games in xbox one where matchmaking is an issue? I've never had that issue on either but for older games this definitely will benefit once player bases drop. Rocket league player base will soon be bigger on xbox pc and switch due to the fact of sonys hubris.

Now if MS reach Sony and says they will pay a part of DLC profit from the users that played on PS4 with outside DLC.

Now we are talking about negotiations... Sony can and should think about it.

I can't wait for the "discussion" next week and the week after that. Fun times ahead.

Before that they should not? You're not a fan of pro-customer decisions? It's even possible between Switch and Xbox, and iOS and Android, and iOS and Xbox - all without paying any of those platformholders in the way that you suggest.

Holy shit, you draw a good point, if Sony really did do crossplay with MS they would lose all their DLC first privileges on any crossplay games. (Due to compatibility issues)

That may be why Sony doesn't wanna crossplay.

Probably the fine print in MS crossplay plan.

This probably isn't the case. There are plenty of games where part of the playerbase has access to content other players in the same pool don't, and that would likely be the situation here also. Rocket League has exclusive cars on each of the console platforms not available to the PC version, but that doesn't prevent them playing together.

The worst case scenario for something like this would probably be that there are items that players on own platform are able to see, but unable to obtain. So you'd see a PlayStation player firing their moneyhat gun, but there would be no way for you to acquire it on Xbox. This wouldn't be any different to someone owning DLC that you don't have.

Now if MS reach Sony and says they will pay a part of DLC profit from the users that played on PS4 with outside DLC.

Now we are talking about negotiations... Sony can and should think about it.

That's stupidly unreasonable, and would be completely unworkable if every individual platform owner requested the same bullshit. You're literally coming up with ways for them to fuck up the landscape long term. They should continue to receive 30% of all DLC purchased via PSN, and if the content is purchased on a different store, that store owner gets 30%. It's not like the game itself becomes free on all platforms, and so someone buying the game on PS4 isn't very likely to be buying the DLC elsewhere. This is standard practice for pretty much everything crossplatform.

In this scenario does Sony return part of the 30% when people play on switch/mobile/pc/Xbox?

Sony has no problem with cross play with PC but with MS there seem to be a problem .
There are few reasons i can think of but it would be interesting if we ever get the reason one day .

Don't Sony still have cross play with PC ?

Come on, strawman excuses here, all DLC is provided through the consoles store and always will be.

Platform holders still get their 30% cut on DLC if it was bought first on their platform. Afterwards the DLC will work on any platform.

Looking at this thread is my idea how cross-play works wrong?

I thought it is just the same server with multiple APIs enabled. So no reason for everyone to must have the same type of account.

Well I guess it means they aren't 100% against if they are at least willing to still have ongoing talks about it. Maybe a couple more mega games (basically just Rockstar) pushing it hard could make them cave.

Though MS have had ongoing talks with Square for FF14 for like 3 years straight now, so probably doesn't mean too much.

Nothing! I said nothing!

Not for this type of game. For Rocket League it could work like that.

I fully expect Microsoft to open a Minecraft storefront that handles all dlc purchases. They'll simplify the purchasing process, as well as cut out the competition's cut of the money.

Win/win.

Why doesn't Sony allow cross play?

1 - Crossplay gives advantage to the console with a smaller install base, and could potentially lessen the sales of multiplats on PS4.

2 - PS4 games already have healthy online userbases for many games, so there is no public pressure to add more players into matchmaking pool.

3 - Logistical issues. How to report/ban user from another console? How to handle 2 players with same username? Do server apps need to be reworked? Can game clients/OS visually show who plays from what platform?

This could happen, but I think it will only come to small pool of selected games.

I'm not sure we'd get cross platform play for Warframe even if Sony allowed it. Do the PS4 and Xbox versions even get updates at the same time? I know the PC and console versions don't.
Warframe devs said crossplay was allowed but they couldn't find a way to synchronize updates across PS4/PC.

They choose not crossplay to allow PC players to have frequent updates released.

Like he said this week "People buy Xbox because we have the biggest exclusives"???

Am I missing sth or this has nothing to do with crossplay?

On topic, hopefully Sony enables this. My kid has an Xbox One, and his best friend a PS4. They wont be able to play together.

Why not just use PSN login data like all others cross-game play?

It's for unifying the content purchases. The infrastructure is already set up through Microsoft accounts, by design. Obviously the publisher of the game would control their own accounts for something like this.

I know, which is why I wouldn't expect CPP for Warframe. That is unless the PS4 and Xbox versions are updated at the same time. If it is, I can see them maybe doing it at least for those two. There will probably never be CPP between consoles and PC though.

*Console they didn't allow things like pure chess in the past

Might need to stop sniffing glue
Greenberg to Sony: So, Cross-Play?
Sony to Greenberg: Yeah, what about it?
Greenberg to Sony: Are you willing to support it?
Sony to Greenberg: Didn't we already cover this, something something something commitment to our customer's and something something something loyalty?
Greenberg to Sony: Come on. We all benefit from Cross-Play support.
Sony to Greenberg: No.
Greenberg to Sony: We have PUBG.
Sony to Greenberg: Interesting.... .... .... No.

I doubt that will happen... Minecraft PS4 players will continue buying this version DLCs.

Minecraft is a largely social game, and the ps4 version won't be getting the huge update that's coming to the cross-play versions. I imagine a non-insignificant amount of people would switch to a version where they can play with all their friends with the newest version rather than sticking to a legacy version.

It won't kill Sony, it might not even be a blip on their radar, but Minecraft is large enough that this is a game I don't think they'll come out of harm free by denying cross-play.

I mean Sony seem to have a problem with MS more than PC .
At that time Xbox was not the picture so it's wouldn't be that. Everything they have done so far shows they are against console cross-play but not PC.
Sure, but they're still not going to take the risk.
True but Psyonix have said cross-platform parties are considered a completely different thing by console manufactures so it's not like they would be opening the doors here.

I feel like this is a prelude to simple leaving the console market and focusing on pc only. Not sure why. I hope not as well.
