The only problem is I need a short throw because of my limited space. Otherwise I would totally grab one of the kinda 4k ones. I haven't even seen short throws, just the ultra short throws (which was the 50grand one). My projector is good enough but being a larger size I figured UHD would look better than standard Blu-ray.

Good looking out. Yes I'm annoyed that they separate it. It NEEDS to be bundled as one package every time. People like me and others have access to both 3d and 4k and would like the option to play both.


Second, came someone explain Dolby Vision vs HDR10 to me? This whole time I thought it was 12-bit vs 10-bit but it appears that's not the case?

They are both different HDR standards. HDR10 is an open standard and more widely adopted. Dolby Vision is proprietary but also supports a wider range of color. But less equipment supports it. I think it will be more common in 2018.

IIRC all Dolby Vision displays are also HDR10 compatible. You are correct in that DV supports 12bit and I think it can go much brighter if the display is capable.

Have you actually done the math on that? Because short throw is really only for ridiculously huge screens or closet-like rooms. You can normally put a regular projector in a small bedroom no problem.

EDIT: Wait, you have a projector now? Huh...

Dolby Vision is HDR10, with an enhancement layer. HDR10 was created by Dolby, the Dolby Vision enhancements are, a higher APL(Average Picture Level, greater overall scene brightness), 12 bit color depth, dynamic metadata (this means that film studio colorist can create metadata on a scene by scene or frame by frame basis, consisting of multiple brightness levels throughout film run-time, unlike HDR10 that use static metadata. Samsung, volunteered to create a enhancement layer for HDR10, that should be released to the market soon, there is supposed to be streaming demos on the latest Samsung QLEDs.

Just to make sure, because some of this is kind of confusing, Dolby Vision does not require HDMI 2.1, right? Is there any advantage to waiting for sets that have 2.1?

Well there's the new HDR10 that has dynamic metadata, variable refresh rate, and lossless audio over HDMI-ARC.

Watched Pacific Rim in 4K yesterday. Was nice but I don’t know if I’m seeing that much difference vs bluray. Maybe I’ll only notice if I try and switch back. I even sat on the floor closer to the tv :)

I really want 4K projectors to drop in price.

I redeemed the Bluray GotG2 on vudu. They gave me the UHD version. Not sure if that is useful to anyone, but it's cheaper than buying the 4K bluray

Man the HDR on Guardians 2 is amazing. I haven't watched a ton of 4K discs yet, but it was the most impressive I've seen so far.

What say you GAF?

AFAIK the difference is basically:

Denon = Auro 3D support
Marantz = Better analog inputs and higher quality DAC

Both have HEOS and both seem like decent mid-range options.

Just wondering if Auro 3D is worth it, or if it's better to just stick with the Marantz.

Does the X4400H come with Auro 3D already enabled? I know on my previous Denon units it was enabled by paying an extra fee.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one honestly. Last year I upgraded from a Denon receiver to a Marantz pre-pro (wanted Atmos) and sound quality wise I've found them evenly matched.

Yep, don't get sucked into annual AVR replacement churn. It's the component of your home theater that will get replaced at the highest frequency. So unless there's a feature you ABSOLUTELY need to have in the X4400H, there's no reason to not get the previous model at a much better value. Keep in mind that in a year, that X4400H is going to have a large drop in price as well. That's the nature with annual model releases.

So I just went through my whole list of movies on vudu and looked at used codes. Now I'm not seeing any UHD. There may have been a glitch and I had UHD for a limited time. Sorry for getting people's hopes up.

Yes. Auro 3D is enabled by default on the X440H.

This year's models both list Dolby Vision support and have announced an upcoming update for HLG HDR. Last year's only lists HDR10.

The DAC was supposedly upgraded on this year's models as well.

This isn't a system that is going to get replaced in 2-3 years. Buying a 10+ year amp for my parents. They want to set it up and forget it, so looking to ensure it is both quality and future proof.

I'm happy to mess around and tweak stuff. They don't want to deal with any of that.

4300h will get a Dolby Vision update, not sure about HLG but it seems that's a strong possibility. In any case, there's not a 4k Bluray player(outside of Xbox One) that doesn't have HDMI out for audio only, so you can run the video directly to the TV and the audio to the receiver. There's no need to have it direct Dolby Vision support. Also why not just start with the 4300h for $799 and, if you absolutely need to later on, get the 4400h this same time next year for $799? You can sell the old receiver and not pay much more to upgrade. Right now you're paying twice the price to future proof, and you're not really future proofing much because we'll be getting receivers with HDMI 2.1 support next year

My parents don't want to deal with multiple inputs on multiple devices. The only switching source should be the receiver. They're also not going to be keen on me replacing their hardware every year.

Whatever I buy is going to be the receiver that powers their family room for the next decade.

Not everyone is an A/V geek. While I don't mind upgrading components and tweaking to get things just right, they want it installed, and they want it to just work when new devices are connected.

As for HDMI 2.1, it's nice that it is hitting next year, but they need a receiver this year. Not next year.

If your parents are like mine, what are the chances they even notice the difference between Dolby Vision and HDR10?

You're getting 100% of the features via automatic firmware upgrade in the very near future for ~50% of the cost. That seems like a no brainer to me.

Logitech Harmony remote, once programmed it doesn't matter how complicated your setup is, they can just hit "Watch TV" and everything will turn on and switch to the correct input.

Backing this up. Did it for my parents and my in-laws and it greatly simplified things for them. This was after having one for a long time ourselves since the wife doesn't care for all the remotes and input changes needed.

Not quite, but it didn't hurt. :p

I got the Harmony Touch on sale at Best Buy for like $100 or something. It was worth the upgrade from the old 600 because the touchscreen is decent, the remote programs nicely, is easy to customize and has a charging base (charge on it lasts 3-4 days, usually) so I don't have to swap batteries every month or so.

My game room ("my room") on the other hand I just use the AVR remote since it can turn the TV and AVR on and I know what inputs are to what device. It's easy.

WW, Guardians, and Logan have all been tragic, but they've released some great steelbooks recently

Kong and GiTS are gorgeous, and the Homecoming box art looks damn fine
