Kotaku: Switch keeps dominating PS4 sales in Japan (first 26 weeks sales data)

When has Nintendo not dominated the handheld market.
As few have suggested I'd like to see a 3ds comparison. Ultimately that's where I think the switch will end up numbers wise.

Both Switch and PS4 are doing pretty similarly to their predecessors. This whole thread is pretty much non news. Well i guess there is plenty of people that don't visit weekly Media Create threads.

New console sells better than older console.

What a scoop.

It's comparing when the first 26 weeks of Switch to the first 26 weeks of PS4, when it was new, not current numbers. Although it is a handheld compared to a console in Japan which, yeah, obviously the handheld is going to win.

The PS4 had a terrible start so this isn't really a fair comparison.

The Switch will do very well in Japan, this is just the start.

PS4 had a terrible start middle and end if we are being serious lol.

Switch will outsell PS4's ltd in like 18 months. It's competition is PSP/3DS/PS2 sales. PS4 is irrelevant.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
I mean, it's not shocking anymore, but let's not pretend people had no idea if a hybrid would work before it came out. Japan was always going to be an easier sell though, and hybrid or not Splatoon is much more popular there than it is worldwide. Splatoon 2 will keep Switch sales as high as they can be over there for quite some time.

Even if Switch is a handheld it's a handheld selling at a home console price with home console priced software.

Not only that successful consoles don't peak in their first year, so yes older consoles do outsell newer ones lol.

Switch hasn't even had it's first holiday yet either. It will be very interesting to see sells more hardware WW this and next year between Switch and PS4. It will be close. Nintendo may dethrone the market leader here.

I know, but this is the first 26 weeks, which is more than just a few months. The Wii U was dead in the water by then.

Did you read the OP? Lol

the Wii U was ahead of the PS4 after a year and that was after we knew the Wii U was going nowhere.

comparing with the PS4 in japan is gonna be pointless for the entire gen. it's like comparing vs the Dreamcast.

the real news is if the Switch starts outselling the PS4 in america or europe.

The Switch is the smartest idea Nintendo has come up with in well over a decade. They were able to create a single piece of hardware that is appealing to different types of consumers on a global scale. Great to see it doing so well in Japan (and almost everywhere else as well).

I can't help but wonder what the internal conversations were about combined handheld and home console audiences ... I wonder if some execs at Nintendo were opposed to combining two revenue streams into one.

But 3ds is still selling so for now it's been good.

And hand the core console market over to Microsoft? I'm sure they'll be very pleased to pick it up.

I didn't mean the PS5 being a hybrid, but rather a Vita successor if you will, and perhaps it can be based on the same architecture so the software can be cross compatible, like PS4/PS4-Pro.

I just think the hybrid concept (and the details of its marketing and execution) are too good for someone else not to attempt.

So Sony will only support dock mode after 2 years then?

I don't know what that means.

Aww I didn't post in that thread. I can't completely remember but I don't think I was high on the Switch at all. Would have been fun to see how I would have slandered the hell out of it back then.

I had to have posted somewhere... we need a crow thread to dig those posts up.

lol @ attempting to basically write off sales for an entire region for console gaming.

Yeah GL with that.

PS5 would have to be pretty damn weak to enable that.

I'd love it though :p

I really think Apple is the only company besides Nintendo who could really make a success out of a hybrid platform.

PS4's first year had nothing truly appealing to the Japanese audience so this is a bit unfair.
I guess going hybrid was the best Nintendo could do and its finding success so congrats.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

That's a excellent point and something getting lost in this heavily revisionist thread.

For all the "of course its selling great its a handheld!" talk, Switch costs a lot more than any previous Nintendo handheld. 3DS needed a price drop from $250 to catch fire in Japan. Switch is selling out at a higher price and won't need a price cut for a long time.

"Nintendo had the nerve to develop games appealing to the 2nd largest gaming region in the world. Unfair. Congrats I guess"

Shocking News!

It is no surprise because Switch is a hybrid unlike the PS4.

So... what are you implying? That people are twice as likely to buy it cos it's two consoles in one? Don't think that's how it works tbh.

Even if Switch is a handheld it's a handheld selling at a home console price with home console priced software.

This can't be stated enough. I don't know what "lol but Switch is just a handheld!!" comments are trying to say- if I'm honest they just sound like console war shit about the Switch being 'underpowered' etc.

It's not some sort of "gotcha!"- Nintendo aren't manipulating figures to make it look like they're succeeding in the home console market when actually it's just a budget handheld. Regardless of how powerful it is, or how people play it, the Switch sits firmly within the established home console market.

Surely the charts and the fact that nintendo has demonstrably dominated handheld market speaks volumes people wouldn't...
