Gundam Versus |OT| The World, Western release out now!

It's actually kinda hilarious, because the description of the beta includes the Tutorial. Even Dissidia NT has a tutorial video in the game.

Gundam Versus itself isn't too difficult, but without knowing basic mechanics and how to utilize them it becomes a slog to play.
Adding veteran players to the mix who ravish destroying beginners, one can imagine the outcome.
Sometimes I think BN wants the game to bomb hard.

Also those who like to play singleplayer, what's in the beta is about everything that the full game offers. The only difference is the volume of the current modes, that you'll have to unlock ALL Strikers, some alternative pilots for some MS and a handful of navigators like Haro. The unlocking itself is very grindy, because not only do you have to earn enough GP, you also need to "level up" the Mobile Suits before they become available for GP purchase.
Also the Time/GP ratio for singleplayer is terrible. From what I recall playing online is pretty much the best way to earn GP.

To be brutally honest here, the japanese version already has a barrage of DLC units. So you might not exactly be looking at a once and done investment of $60, but possibly an amount of DLC that far exceeds the cost of the initial game.
We are just 3 months in and are approaching 7 DLC units, excluding the 3 preorder bonus units.
The japanese pricing is at about $6 per DLC unit. So far nothing is known about the western pricing.

Make no mistake this isn't really a "beta". The japanese version has been released since beginning of July and I have seen no netcode changes so far. I'm hoping for improvements, but my expectations are incredibly low.

Thanks so much for the info. I think I'll cancel my preorder on Amazon and just wait until this game is at least half price.

How do you chat to your partners? I just got two games where I got a "thank you" at the end but didn't know how to respond.

There's a dedicated communications button with 4 messages bound to each of the D-pad directions and one neutral one that changes with your health. There are two sets of messages - one for in-battle, and one for post-game.

This was probably the game I was most hyped for this year and now I can't believe I'm genuinely considering cancelling my preorder.

These server issues make the game absolutely unplayable. Out of 30 or so matches, I've had exactly 2 without lag on my 200mbps ethernet connection.

The preorder comes with 3 DLC units: Lupus, Virtue and Hot Scramble.
Hot Scramble doesn't seem to be available for purchase in Japan for now. So no idea how they are going to handle it. It's one of the best units in the game though.

On the other hand, they might release DLC you want post release. So saving money on a sale would be a good idea. The first 5 are out in Japan, another 2 are confirmed to come.
But as I said, so far there is no information about how they are going to handle the DLC here.

Here's the official listing of all MS. Those marked as NEW are the DLC units. Just in case one of them catches your eye.

Yeah I am kinda thinking to give it a month or two to try to catch it used. Maybe by then the netcode will be tight.

This is so weird. This game got my lust for mechs reawakened. Hopped right into Titanfall 2 and had a blast. But Gundam is fun too when 'it works online'

Those having sync and lag issues when I have played the Japanese version this did occur but really not as often as in this beta. So that can mean one of two things:

1. They are still trying to fine tune the net code to fit the western world.

Or

2. The internet in Japan is much better than many places in North America and Europe etc. Where unless you have decent internet you are going to lag up everyone else in a match.

Now granted other games have done a better job with their net code then how this beta is running but I just wanted to get my thoughts out there.
Yeah, I'm in Canada, but have had much smoother matches in the JP version compared to this beta.

I can't recommend it in good conscience when it has issues, especially when it affects the majority of the game. So it's a good thing that there is a beta for people to check it out.
I'm not a fan of having to unlock Strikers either. While we are talking about Strikers, every DLC unit comes with their Striker counterpart, that also has to be unlocked first I think. Strikers are usually early unlocks, so it's not that bad.

Gundam Versus is a blast when it works. Probably the best mecha multiplayer game in the business, but you have to be able to play it first.

I haven't been able to connect to a single person so far, and I have decentish internet. No issues in any other game (even Breaker). :/

So I've been trying to use ggez as a resource for the game, but I don't understand the notation they use?

for an example here's altron's page.
http://www.ggez.space/altron-gundam/

It uses numpad for direction inputs, and the idea that:
A is shoot (square)
B is melee (triangle)
C is boost/jump (X)

So when two letters are together, it either means press them at the same time, or press the shortcut, so:
AB is L1
AC is L2
BC is R2

CC is a weird one, as that means double tap X to do a boost.

So, if you take his 4 (or 6, which is either left or right) B (melee) combo, Altron can either:
4B (so side melee)
4BB (so side melee, then neutral melee)
4B-A (so side melee, then his grab (which is square)

You can replace 4 with 6, which just means you input right instead of left with the first melee attack.

Hopefully that helps.

Thanks a bunch! Hopefully I'll be able to get into it a bit more now.

I've only tried a bit of Altron, but with his, and all other charge moves, you can buffer it in another animation.
So if you do a neutral melee combo, so press triangle twice, but hold square as you start the melee animation, you can hide the animation, and cancel the melee into the charged square attack (twin arm grab).

Edit: Wel, that doesn't work with Altron, but that idea works with others. So if you're charging a gunshot, you don't need to shoot then hold the shoot button down. You can hold it mid melee combo.

Oh man I finally get it- this game uses old skool RTS style netcode where it wants to keep everyone in the match 'synced' up. So if someone lags, the entire session lags for all

Darn shame the netcode is really rough cause the basic combat is really fun when the game let's you play online

Think of a num pad on a key board:

7 8 9
4 5 6
1 2 3

5 is neutral position on your stick, aka don't hold a direction. 8 is up, 2 is down, 4 is left, 6 is right.

A is shoot
B is melee
C is boost

So if something says CC8B, that means you double tap dash > hold up on the controller/joystick > then hit melee.

EDIT: yeah what's above ^^

Completely agree about the Tutorial.

Many of Freedom's moves just leave it open a lot, I played the old Gundam Vs. Seed games back on PS2 and it feels similar in concept but Freedom here certainly doesn't feel very agile which is one of the trademarks of the design. It needs better mobility but it would make more sense if it was Strike Freedom with the Dragoons available. That said, I may just need more time with it and the various other units to really know how if Freedom is simply not as good as it could be. Might be a cost thing too, for a 400 unit it doesn't seem especially powerful since the beam spams are so easy to dodge and completely leave it open although it does make up for that for being fairly versatile for both close and ranged combat it just feels like in general its missing something.

What are the chances that they release the Strike Freedom? Is it already in the Japanese version?

There are SO many Gundams. I need help figuring out who I should be playing. I tend to like space control characters with high mobility options in the games I play. I know 2D fighters don't necessarily translate well here, but any pointers are helpful. I tend to like antagonists over protagonists.

MvC3: Dormammu
Smash: Mewtwo
BlazBlue: Nine
MvC2: Sentinel
Dissidia Demo: Y'Shtola
SFV: Bison
GG: Raven
Skullgirls: Painwheel

Even just a few suggestions would help a lot!

I think Various-S units may be what you're looking for, they're mostly mid-ranged units that have some close-combat options. I've been having a lot of fun with Tallgeese.

Can you break down the suit types? I've noticed:
Various
Various-S
Various-F
Fighting
Shooting

It seems like "Fighting" have little to no ranged attacks; what separates Various-S from Shooting and Various-F from Fighting?

I don't know why bandi namco doesn't let u stream the game on the PS4 app it's fucking petty and stupid

That's probably because of the music licensing, since you can still do screenshots.

When in doubt pick a top tier.

Try them out from top to down, because they do might fit you. Though I'd guess that Zeong is probably the most technical one.

lol, I have to match up pictures. -_-

When reading about different units, sometimes I read about "Transform" and "Form Change" - what are those, and how do I do them?

Edit: Is everything not on this tier list total trash not worth picking at all?

Transform are ususally MA mode, i.e. a flight mode. It can be activated as a special move or by double tapping the flight direction while holding boost down while dashing.

The tier list is put into cost categories: 500, 400, 300 and 200. You need to click on them separately.

I've been playing some 2v2 and it feels like some of my inputs aren't being read. Like, I'm hitting the button to call for a striker or L1 for a secondary, but my MS is just chillin.

It does the weirdest thing to my brain and kills my focus when it happens.

Messala might be a really good starting pick if that is your style.
It's a 300 cost unit but honestly has way too many options and tricks for its cost.
I'm pretty sure it's top tier in the 300 cost group.

Quick JP vid I found:

They really need to fix when the host leave it dosent to kick everyone out and migrate to a new host because it kicks you out mid match

According to the one I linked it's just on tier under S-Tier Gyan.
Providence Gundam might also be an interesting pick due to Dragoon Units.

That makes sense, although I don't always agree with that tier list.
Messala is definitely one of the few 300 cost units you will see in competition I think.
Most don't have enough to distinguish themselves from a good 200 cost unit IMO.

I.E. I can't really see why Heavyarms would be ranked higher than Deathsycthe.
I feel like it is the opposite (although both are decent units) after putting quite a few hours into both.

I wouldn't take the tier list too serious. More of a vague idea.
From what I recall it's still volatile, especially due to the balance patches.

Heavy Arms and Deathscythe are still close, might be a YMMV thing. I think at the beginning Deathscythe was regarded as top tier, so you can see how things can change.

Man I don't like how Gundams that have a high cost count lose half their health on their second life in 1v1. Feels unfair.

Nah, I think the netcode is trash.
The Dissidia NT Beta has a better netcode than this.

I disagree most of my matches have been pretty good.
Also when you get with a good partner man this game is fun. I can see why tallgeese ii is low tier he don't have enough attacks but I love the hop dash fire it's so fun but he doesn't do enough damage too. Love using the unit tho

If they buff the Freedom I'll for sure buy this.

It's not that he's awful or anything. He's decent. But the problem is that he's really slow and his strongest attacks are easy as hell to dodge. There are Gundams who can almost do equal amount of damage from 2 hits of their basic attacks.
