Jaden Smith & Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig have an anime premiering on Netflix 9/22.

Anime was a mistake.
Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig has tweeted, “NEO YOKIO IS THE GREATEST CITY IN THE WORLD. 🙏 to Studio Deen, Production IG, Jaden Smith, Kazuhiro Furuhashi & many more,” along with four photos. The first is an anime character’s head; the second is a screenshot of Jaden Smith’s Instagram page, which has the same head; and the final two pictures show the Instagram page @neoyokio. Included on @neoyokio is an image that says “September 22 Netflix.” Check it out below. Pitchfork has contacted representatives for Vampire Weekend and Netflix.

As Stereogum points out, Jude Law mentioned “Neo Yokio” during a June 2016 TimesTalk. Law said at the time, “I was just part of a really eccentric and exciting project that Ezra Koenig, who’s the lead singer of Vampire Weekend—he wrote and conceived this animated series that’s about to start, I believe on Netflix, called ‘Neo Yokio.’” He continued, “I think Jaden Smith is playing this little boy called Kai in it, and I’m his butler. I’m this kind of huge robot butler called Charles, who is also a rocket ship. And it takes place in a New York that is sort of combined with Tokyo in the future.”
Bruh, what.

Here's a clip?

Listing out the talent related to this, we got:
- Jaden Smith
- Ezra Koenig
- Jude Law
- Studio DEEN
- Production I.G.
- Kazuhiro Furuhashi (is he good or not)

This takes weebery to a whole new level.

Jaden would actually be pretty good for an anime character dub tbh. Same goes for Jude Law voicing a robot (AI)

Could be cool. Hopefully Ezra contributes music

Kazuhiro Furuhashi was the director of Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal, just saying. He was the director of the old Hunter x Hunter series as well. More recently he directed Gundam Unicorn. The man is good on my list.

I'm glad Production I.G. and Studio DEEN got paid and all, but really?

Can a patron of anime television tell me if the anime-side of this project is any good?
The pedigree of the two studios includes some very well received shows. Some top hits between the two include the Ghost in the Shell series, Initial D, Rurouni Kenshin, Ranma 1/2, FLCL, and Angel's Egg.

Looks like a good thing to watch while at the gym.

Hoping for Jojo level wackiness, but I'm worried it'll come out as forced.

Production IG is famous for their work on the anime adaptations of Ghost in the Shell. They also worked on the animated cutscenes in Persona 5.

Studio DEEN is famous for the first Fate/Stay Night anime as well as Hetalia and Konosuba.

So they've worked on some pretty highly regarded stuff.

Studio DEEN.

Yep, it's an anime. I will definitely watch the first few episodes.

I just hope the Japanese dub is decent and not full of stereotypical and offensive broken/slow Japanese that is given to every black character in any anime.

DEEN is more known for its quality control issues than for its quality, I'd say. The first Fate adaptation was not great. Konosuba was able to play the wonkiness to its comedic advantage for the most part.

Definitely a well known (and even reasonably well-liked) studio these days, though.

Fate was years ago at this point, though, and any wonkiness in Konosuba was entirely intentional as opposed to being any kind of quality control issue.

Pucci will make up for it. Assuming we ever see part 6.

Hm. Not sure which other shows they've done recently, but I seem to remember Log Horizon S2 was theirs and it had a few off model moments. Certainly they've improved since Fate.

So this an anime starring:

Jaden Smith
Ezra Koenig
Jude Law
Desus & Mero

.............huh. That's a MadLibs if I've ever hear one.

Wow that artwork is butt nuggets. If that's an indicator it's a hard pass from me.

Edit: ah just saw the tweet. It does look a bit better in motion. I'm normally a fan of I.G. so I should at least give this an episode.
