iPhone X | OT | November 3

I was shocked to hear yesterday that TouchID has a 1:50000 chance that a random person can unlock my phone. Thats a higher chance then someone who finds that Android Phone from 2011 and has to guess who I am or trying it on random internet faces.

And i do banking with TouchID.

People lock phones for two reasons: losing it, and locking out people they know.

Finding 100 let alone 50000 fingers to unlock a Touch ID isn't practical. Knowing a colleague or family member and unlocking their Samsung phone with a picture is a very simple scenario.

A simple bit pointless one. FaceID is a 3D scan.

Edit: oh, you meant Samsung, carry on.

As stupid as the animoji thing is, I predict that's something every phone will do in 5 years, it's the obvious next step in social media to have hate speech spewing from anonymous 3d avatars.

The iPhone X looks great, but it really has me curious as to how they handle the lineup going forward. Originally I was hoping they would merge line up, but the lack of SE update kinda messes that up.

lack of SE isn't unusual. First, they've only ever had one SE I think, so its difficult to estimate a trend for what may have been a one-off. Secondly, it makes sense for them to talk about a more affordable device in the spring, after they've milked as much of the higher ASP buying public as possible.

did the iphone 7 always start at 32GB? I think thats too low for me, but the next step up is 128GB which is £649. At that point I'll probably stump up the £50 to get the base iphone 8 (64GB should be enough space).

My vaio laptop had a finger print reader 15 years ago. Nobody used it because it was slow and unreliable. My treo had a web browser and so did my blackberry but they were slow and unreliable too. Nobody used them.
I bet most Samsung users don't use face unlock, because it sucks.

And here is an android person to say just that:
https://m.androidcentral.com/take-it-note-8-user-temper-your-iphone-x-face-id-expectations

But they are wrong in predicting the same hassle for the iPhone x one. It's already obvious it's slick.

Like I said, it worked, and I used it in 2011.

So this is where we're at now? We openly acknowledge that these features existed on other platforms over half a fucking decade ago, just pretend it sucked until we did it!

I know! Let's get a real live "android person" to shit on the features and prove it sucked until we came along and did it? Suckers.

Are you drunk? TBH you sound really pissed off.
It's just a gadget. Unless you own stock in Samsung or work for them I can't see why you'd get so upset about things. Even if you own stock in Samsung they make the screens so they will be fine.

they are missing out on the higher ASP buying public who still get an iPhone SE because they prefer the smaller size. If they released SE update with an OLED screen and higher price *ahem* iPhone SEX *ahem* I'd be all over that

Confused about the iphone upgrade plan, probably something fundamental I'm missing, but if I want to wait for the X I'm effectively two months of repayments out of pocket compared to going for the 8 at launch? Just seems illogical (I spoke to someone in an apple store, but she couldn't grasp what I was on about).

I use it and it unlocks my phone almost instantly.

A security system that can be easily bypassed doesn’t “work”. When it’s entire purpose (security) can be easily fooled, that is a fail.

If I do get an X, I plan to keep it for 2 years.

Fuck spending £1000 then upgrading the year after man, I gotta get my monies worth.

But then I say that and Apple do something with the X2 and have me like welp let me go spend.

I really do hate that theres no 128GB model, 256GB is overkill for me. 64GB might just be enough but for the price come on son.

Okay, here's what I think I'm gonna do...

Get the 256GB X with an Apple Leather Case.

Then I'm getting the hell out of this arms race. I've had every major release iPhone since the original, 10 years ago. Been through the 5S, 6, 6S and 7 launches here with Apple-GAF. After the X that'll be enough.

With 256GB and a good case, at almost £1200, im gonna make that phone last a looooong time.
Definitely.

I never had an iPhone, but getting used to thumbprint recognition on the S7 Edge & S8+, I can't see only using facial recognition as a reasonable way to primarily unlock your device.

That's better than the 7, which I think only allows to swap between the two most recent. I imagine the 8 is similar.

Apple removed 3D touch switching in iOS 11.
Looks like they removed a feature in older phones so the new phones would have more exclusive features.

But wouldn’t you “get used to facial recognition” the same way as you did thumbprint recognition?

People have such a hard time with change.

They removed it because it was pretty buggy and unreliable. The feature in the X is different. It has to do with the area at the bottom that you use with the home screen.

But yeah the hard press at the edge was crazy unreliable. I tried forcing myself to switch from the double click but couldn’t get it off reliably that I never switched. Hopefully the X method will work flawlessly.

The S8+ has this feature, and it is fairly easy to use. The reaction time you have with your thumb is a nice chemistry you develop with your phone. The facial recognition is a bit more of a challenge because of the variety of positions you'll find yourself in throughout a normal day.

It's amazing that the Pixel XL 2 may be the cheapest of the high end smartphones @ $750. The iphone is a grand. The Note 8 is $950. According to XDA the V30 is likely going to be $850 to undercut the competition: https://www.xda-developers.com/lg-v30-undercut-price-note-8-iphone-8/

I'm still hopeful that the Pixel XL 2 may be the phone for me but if that doesn't seem to work then the V30 is a close second I guess. I spent $600 dollars for my Lumia 950 a couple years ago and I thought that was almost a bridge too far. :/

Yeah, the pricing arms race is getting kind of crazy. The pricing has me not even interested in what's being offered. I'll stick with my 6s until it dies.

The demos on Verge and 9to5 were inconsistent but left me with optimism. Every time they were like “this is FaceID” and they’d hold the camera straight in front of them (which is what everyone is complaining about). But there were at least a dozen plus times across various videos where it was at arm’s length and down by their waist or table and it still unlocked. I am guessing Apple hasn’t heard the reaction yet but THAT’S what they should be demoing. Demo it on the table or passing at arm’s length. I think that will go a long way to settling people down. Definitely admit that the videos and keynote they sold it as accurate, but yeah it didn’t look convenient at all. But you can see in the videos plenty of times they unlock it like people are expecting (hoping for) it to work.

9to5 had one in particular where he showed apple pay. Which I know has people worried where it was right in front of his face. But then like 3 secs later he unlocked it 2-3 times with his arm down in front of him. It’s like “why wouldn’t you emphasize the convenience of that instead of looking like a goof with it in front of you?l”

Wait they removed 3D Touch multitasking!? That suckkkkkkkkkkkkkkks

Kind of liking the purple silicone case for the X. Maybe it's just Gamecube nostalgia though. Feels like any case is kind of going to take away from the whole immersive element though.

Hoooooo boy never had an ignore list this easy in a while. You're living some wild narrative outside of reality.

question... whenever they mentioned the 1 in 1,000,000 chance of someone randomly unlocking your Face ID phone they also mentioned 1 in 50,000 for Touch ID.

so if you had 50,000 people try to open an iPhone with Touch ID, 1 person would likely have close enough fingerprint for it to work? I assumed fingerprints were unique enough for this to not happen, or is it a limit of the fingerprint scanner?

Probably a bit of both, fingerprints aren't actually completely unique

TouchID is much more convenient than it is secure

With Touch ID supposedly possible to be underneath the screen, would it be possible for top notch parts as well? I'm debating either get the X or wait for a true full screen solution.

Afaik fingerprints are unique however the resolution and accuracy of the sensor along with the number of features picked to compare introduce errors which increase the the chances of a match to a false fingerprint, especially if you want to almost never fail matching a true fingerprint.

So it's a balancing act and trades off convenience against chance to be fooled.

It's not as secure, simple as that.

Depends on the definition of security you are using. You can make an argument for either being less secure than the other.

If FaceID alone was enough, Apple wouldn't have been trying to make TouchID work under the screen for the last year

you are super not mad right now, huh

It's not as secure, simple as that.

I think obtaining a fingerprint from a mark is easier than obtaining a 3D death mask of their face and then building a latex version that fools the sensor. This may change I expect some researcher to say in the next 12 months that from a dozen face pictures their software can 3D print a mask that will fool the sensor however as of now I think it's likely to be more secure.

Does the iPhone x not have a micro sd card slot yet?

Some family members are thinking of the cheaper option but are wanting more than 64gb space.

I think Apple has already patented this. And yeah, that will probably be their end goal for the X design line.

Going 'back' to TouchID seems like silly proposition to me.
Oh no, I was referring to the FaceID sensors under the display so that the notch will be gone for good. TouchID isn't coming back unless they create something more amazing like whole screen fingerprint reading or sth imo

yeah I just want a video of someone sitting at a desk with the phone to their side - they get a notification and they tap the screen to wake it, and it unlocks as they look at it.

It's Apple, so if you want something, you buy it up front. I doubt they'll ever put out an iPhone with an SD slot

FWIW, I've never even remotely had space issues with my 64gb. If you use something like Spotify in lieu of actual music files and let iCloud automatically manage your photo library, you'll probably never have an issue. In 2 years of use I still have 28gb free. If you like to store copious amounts of music and video then you'll just have to pony up for the extra storage I'm afraid

Going 'back' to TouchID seems like silly proposition to me.

Nothing wrong with both if Apple can make it work as they were trying to for this handset. Some of us have specific use cases where FaceID won't work, yet are quite attached to the Apple ecosystem

They wont go back, all that tech in the front facing camera will find a lot of uses in the marketplace, they'll just add touch id back in as well claiming it's only because some users missed it and not because it took them an extra year to get it to work.

The only difference between the "bar" as you put it and the bezel on the Galaxy 8 or LG phones is that Apple cuts the iPhone X screen to expand into the left and right corners. Beyond that, virtually every phone shipping today needs that "bar" to hold all of the cameras and sensors needed for it to function:

- Phone Speaker
- Mic
- Light Sensor (to turn the screen on/off)
- Front Camera
- IR Cam
- etc

Phones that don't do this have to take other shortcuts. Essential has a smaller cutout for a frontcam, but is forced to move sensors to the bottom bezel, with the speaker/mic along the top edge of the phone (taco style) The Mix moves virtually everything to the bottom "chin", making for awkward front cam shots and the chance that your hand will obstruct it. Until someone invents a way for these sensors to pass through the OLED unimpeded, we're stuck with it.

Thank you for your detailed answer. I guess I would personally prefer a small bezel on the top and bottom like the S8 but I need to see this phone in person first before I judge it too harshly. I'm never switching back to android at this point

Definitely.

You could do the upgrade program? That would cover you if the X2 is a big upgrade.
