Does the X not have an always-on display like Samsung's OLED phones? That's the one feature I was really looking forward to with the switch to an OLED screen.

Wait... So is the power button not for power on off anymore? Impressions make it seem just for Siri similar to bigsby button on s8.

Really do wish they stuck the fingerprint sensor somewhere. Even on the back.

$1000 phone should have no compromise. Give me the options for login like Samsung.

So do we know how this works for not Apple apps yet with no touch id? I haven't seen any place that says if we're stuck reverting back to passwords on apps or not.

I would assume that they are basically replacing the touch id with face id. if the app supports touch id i’m guessing it’ll just switch to face id automatically.

At least I hope it would, seems like the easiest solution.

?? Are you asking for existing TouchID apps? All are 100% forward compatible. Apple said that at the keynote. So your banking app will instantly switch to asking for FaceID to open.

Ok, cool. That's what I was wondering if it would automatically switch or if programmers had to manually update for faceid.

Also yeah can someone break down what the actual differences are in 7+ vs 8+ camera?

And what is true tone? Just marketing speak for calibration?

I had a 7+ and generally liked it except for running out of space with 32gb, and I may have had a faulty fp scanner. The 8+ still has a scanner right?

True tone is basically continuously variable night shift. Shifts screen color based on ambient light. Not a fan personally. I like to use my iPhone as a "reference" of sorts when checking color on photos and videos.

Sorry if this has been discussed already. Where's the control center now? I saw someone swipe from the top to get to the control center. If that's the case then where the notifications?

I would assume that 2 seconds or so will call up Siri, 3-5 seconds(?) will call up the slide-to-turn off.
triple-click will deactivate faceID and force a password entry for the next unlock.

Also, with regards to giving users options - recently, Apple seems to be hellbent on pracitcally forcing users to adapt their usage patterns to what they deem best going forward.
"Wireless headphones are the way to go, trust us on that!" - "yeah, that's cool and all, can we at least have a headphone jack to have the opti..." - "NO!"
"FaceID is the real deal, trust us on that!" - "yeah, that's cool and all, but i rather use my fingerprint to..." - "NO!"
I mean, at least with regards to FaceID - even if your face is "blocked", you can always unlock your phone with your finger by just ... typing in the passcode.

any app that would have called for a TouchID verification will automatically call for a FaceID verification. I think the app doesn't even need to be updated for that.

Control center is top right, notifications top left I believe.

top middle, i think, if i recall the MKBHD video correctly.
swipe down from the center of the screen is still spotlight search.

two things..

first, truetone is kind of fun to fuck with... I change the color/ambiance of my Hue bulbs and see the iPad react in real time.. kind of cool.

second... truetone accomplishes PRECISELY what you are saying. Think about gamma adjustment on your PC monitor.. when you are adjusting gamma to dial in precision color, including with a colorometer.. ambient light plays a huge factor.. which is why a monitor will dial in differently with lights turned on and then turned off in say a sunlit room. so your photos should almost always match on the ipad 10.5" and the print under the same light.. I have tested this out on both my inkjet and color laser... and am really damn impressed. making a change on my ipad in one ambient lit setting, sending it to my calibrated PC.. then printing it.. and all pretty much match despite originally editing it in a different ambient setting on my ipad compared to editing it on my Mac and ultimately printing it.

the iPad 10.5" screen is hands down the best mobile screen ever released (well as of this minute). and that isn't even touching ProMotion which is a delicious icing on that cake. if the new phones' screens respond similarly, this is way way way better than "unlimited night shift"

Is anyone else actually more interested in an iPhone 8/8 Plus than the X? Before the conference, I was set on getting the X, but now I'm not so sure.

- FaceID seems inconsistent and not as efficient or quick as TouchID. I think there are some issues here, with people being able to unlock your phone by pointing it at you, or someone who looks similar to you. I feel the tech needs another year or two for the speed to improve and for any issues to be ironed out.

- The screen cutout near the earpiece is really starting to bother me. I wasn't bothered by it when I saw the leaks, but now that I've seen videos of games and videos being played on the device, it just looks really awkward having a part of the screen just..."missing".

- Price

- Screen brightness. OLED displays don't get quite as bright as LCDs, but many have stated that the OLED panel on the X wasn't even getting as bright as the AMOLED displays on their S8 and Note 8 devices.

When I look at the X, the elements that really get me excited are the A11 Bionic chip, which looks insane, and the 4k 60 FPS video recording - both of which are in the iPhone 8/8 Plus. I'm thinking about just going with an 8 Plus for the A11 and 4K 60 FPS recording, and giving Apple another year or two to refine the design of the X before jumping in.

Anyone else thinking about doing the same?

I would probably leave it on most of the time as long as I can toggle it off quickly. Most content I make is being consumed on screens. I generally try and make sure that stuff looks good at optimal conditions and worse case scenario.

Not sure if this was known, but this is how they're handling some of the info they removed from the status bar (carrier name, icons like do not disturb and bluetooth, battery percentage).

It shows up when you swipe down the control center.

btw, i adore TouchID when it works - but to be fair, ... 5-10% of the time it simply doesn't work for me - either because the home button's a bit grimy, my fingers are sweaty, or dirty, or any combination thereof.

If FaceID keeps its promise and it'll be able to unlock my phone when i'm super sweaty having just run 10 miles, or when i'm soaking wet from having been out in the rain, or when my fingers are dusty from having tinkered in my workshop, or when i'm wearing GLOVES in the winter - i'd welcome it as a meaningful improvement..

If it works consistently, that is. But as i said, TouchID (gen ... 2? 3?, the one in the iPhone 7) works super fast, but not quite as reliably as i'd like it to work.

I would jump on the 8 in a heartbeat if it had dual cameras, at least on the back. Locking that feature to the Plus (which is wayyyy too much phone for me) is absurd. For that reason mainly, being able to have dual cameras in a regular sized body, I'm considering the X.

Other than that though, you're right, the 8 seems like a perfectly fine phone. Maybe by the end of October I'll have had a change of heart and decide it isn't worth the $300.

My wife's touch ID doesn't work AT ALL for her. It works for me though (I constantly have to tech support her phone). Then again, she's a complete moron when it comes to IT matters so she's probably fucked it up somehow.

People lock phones for two reasons: losing it, and locking out people they know.

Finding 100 let alone 50000 fingers to unlock a Touch ID isn't practical. Knowing a colleague or family member and unlocking their Samsung phone with a picture is a very simple scenario.

At least I would like to think that my friends/colleagues/family members would a) not even try that and b) not steal/mess with my Info and abuse my credit card.

So I lock my phone only in case it gets stolen or lost. And here TouchID is kind of bad. I do not beliefe Apple told us in the introduction of TouchID that the odds of random people unlocking the phone are that bad.

there are no links... people are just clinging to it being a thing for the next 7 weeks.

in 7 weeks posts like that will be looked back on "did you REALLY think that's how it was going to be..... /rolleyes"

The pointing it at you should work in theory, no? You'd need to look away from the phone immediately like a medusa head lol.

Someone looking like you though? I wouldnt bet on it.
I mean.... what are you asking here? That someone grabs my phone (from somewhere) and thrusts it into my face and then runs off with it??

when people steal your phone, they tend to attempt to do so in a way to draw the least amount of attention possible. But magically now with the X, they are just going to be nuts about it and essentially send up fireworks that they are stealing your phone

and IF you are in a dangerous position (or cops) and have quick access to your phone.. 5 clicks of the power button and faceid is disabled.

Regarding the top of the screen swipes, I wonder if the left "ear" of the screen pulls down Control Center too. As someone who uses their phone one handed in either hand, that would be.....handy.....if the functionality is symmetrical.

No, it's notifications on that side.

Well the "pointing at you" does work if you look at the phone while they do it (as seen in the hands on videos from The Verge I think).

The "similar to you" is laughable though. No way.

again.. people stealing things (including phones) generally work to not draw attention to themselves.. it usually works out best that way. I don't see the X changing millenia old thieving habits by now having thieves essentially sending up the alarm that they are stealing your device.

So is there a way to shut the device without getting into the settings? That almost seems like another thievery deterrent. If someone steals the phone but can’t shut it down it’s easier to track.

Again what?
I'm just saying that pointing the phone at your face, and if you look at it, it will unlock.
And it does.

I'm not talking about theft or anything.

If I try out Face ID for awhile and end up not liking it, I'll just turn it off and go back to unlocking my phone with a passcode. Did it for years, it was fine. The Touch ID on apple phone has always seemed worse to me than other devices (my brief stint with a Pixel had a much speedier and more accurate reader).

What I'd really like is the ability to turn Face ID off for unlocking the phone, but then leave it on for when I'm in the phone (so I can use it in apps). That would be great.

Lol.

I legit had no idea that they also announced the iPhone eight. I'm getting no tv signal here and only barely getting an Internet connection. So most of my news comes from Facebook and GAF. And everyone wants to talk about the X.

I actually like the "point the phone" to unlock as I won't have to pass the phone to my roommate so she can use her thumb or enter the passcode again while I troubleshoot something for her and it locks.

"Hey Jane, look."

face unlock thing

https://youtu.be/WYYvHb03Eog?t=122

exact time stamp. LOL. it works so well that it unlocks so fast.

I think there must be a proximity thing. you'd know if someone has your phone and pointed it at you.

* that said, if you were a terrorist, you'd probably not want an IPhone X.

Okay that was kinda cool how the processing is keeping up with how quickly his mouth is moving. Also you can see the IR beam thingy blinking incessantly.

maybe they can do FACE id unlocks - generic use and passcode lock unlocks all features. With users being able to dictate what you features of the phone you can unlock with face.

You can always choose to not maximize the video, then it should be letterboxed.
The screen on the iPhone X is wider than a regular 16:9 screen, so full screen youtube content shouldn't be cut off, but rather be pillar boxed.

Like, right now, if you were to watch a video that is cinematic wide screen on your phone, there's letterboxed 16:9 and 'fill-screen', which already cuts off the sides of your video.
So, in 'fill-screen' mode, the iPhone still cuts off some of the image, but way less than the phones before it, while in regular viewing mode you'll have a (presumably less) letterboxed video.

I believe this to be the situation on the iPhone 6 with cinematic ratio video content:

and on the iPhone X it will be, i presume:

anything else would be rather absurd. So i'm guessing that's what we're getting. Less of a cut-off (yet with a weird, non-straight cut-off) when using fill screen. Less black bars when using full screen.

This post finally helped me understand how video would work on this thing

Is that confirmed somewhere? Originally I heard that too but then the MKBHD video said the middle is NC and he didn't show pulling down from the other "ear".

notification is one of the sides, the other is the settings side. either way, its all really intuitive and users will get used very quickly.

I have to ask, what kind of people do you guys hang out with where you are worried that someone would take your phone from you, and then without asking you, point it at your face in order to unlock it and snoop around? Like, this seems like an issue with a very low probability of happening but everyone is so worried about it.
